Chapter 1

Author: Southern Boat
When the System found me once again, I was celebrating my birthday alone.

"Confirming egress from this world. Seven days until the portal opens."

I nodded quietly, then grabbed a piece of cake and stuffed it into my mouth. The poor-quality cream tasted awful, but when I remembered that this was my last birthday cake in this world, I swallowed it without complaint.

Before I could even put my hand down, the door to my room was violently kicked open.

My older brother, Blake Rivers, saw me crouching on the floor. Disdain filled his eyes.

"So this is the reason you refused to come out to celebrate Remy's birthday even after we called you so many times! You're already celebrating your birthday on your own here!"

Upon hearing that, my dad stepped out from behind Blake. Immediately, he grabbed the cake in my hand and threw it into my face without hesitation. The sticky cream smeared my face and my hair, and the sliminess was quite upsetting.

I looked at my dad, stunned, but all I got was a furious reprimand.

"Do you really not want to celebrate your birthday with Remy that badly? We've finally found her after so long! Do you really dislike her that much? Have we treated you badly all these years? Do you lack love so much, you don't want her to get even a little bit of attention from you?" he roared.

Out in the corridor, my mom was holding Remy in her arms. There was only impatience in her eyes. While she had said nothing, her silence had already proven her stand on this.

I looked at the disdain on their faces and subconsciously extended my hand out, wanting to defend myself. However, Blake brutally swiped my hand while it was in mid-air. A stinging red bruise quickly appeared on my fair skin.

"Fiona, you just want to upset Remy during her birthday, don't you? Have you forgotten how much she suffered because of you? Are you still trying to bully her?" he snarled.

I simply looked at him silently and stopped defending myself.

So many times, I've cried and begged to defend myself when things like this happened. Even when my throat became dry and I had run out of tears, they still refused to believe me. Instead, they consoled Remy whose eyes had become only a little red.

In the past, I wanted to question them countless times. I was the one they had spent so many years with, but why wouldn't they believe me?

But now? I was going to leave soon. The answers to those questions were no longer important.

I chuckled and looked into Blake's eyes. Once, his gaze upon me was filled with love. Now, however, only contempt remained.

Blake took my gesture as a provocation. His chest heaving, he struck my face hard. "You still refuse to admit it? What more do you want?"

The impact swung my head all the way to the side. I could feel the numbing pain on the left side of my face.

Remy, who was hiding behind everyone, suddenly cried, "Blake!"

It wasn't because she was worried about me. She was simply startled by what he had done.

My mom patted Remy's back before casting a disdainful gaze at me. "Alright, Blake. Today is Remy's birthday, so don't upset her. Leave Fiona here to think about what she has done."

Blake snorted and kicked the cake right in front of me. The smiling face on the cake turned over, instantly becoming a crying face.

The door in front of me shut with a deafening bang.

The sounds of laughter and blessing were separated by this door, but they still entered my ears without pause.

I pushed myself and crawled up, heading toward the washroom. My red, swollen, cream-smeared face was evidence of what had just happened.

I cleaned myself up slowly with a towel.

It was fine. Seven more days.

I consoled myself that I could leave in seven days.

Remy's words were like daggers cutting into my parents' hearts, drawing blood."How dare you! Is this how I raised you?!" My dad raised his hand in the air before bringing it down hard on Remy's face. Seeing this, the other officers hurried to stop him. Remy's face was now all red and swollen on both sides. She covered it and screamed, "Why? Why?! Fiona owes me! She owes me all of this in the first place!"She wept bitterly, the sound heart-wrenchingly loud. Aside from the police officers, however, no one would wrap their arms around her and console her this time. After the case was solved, Tom was persecuted and then sentenced to death. My body was brought home, to be cremated before being buried. Many guests came to my funeral. My friends, classmates, and even teachers attended. They cried their hearts out and talked about our lives together in front of my photo. As my parents listened, the regret on their faces grew clearer and clearer. My homeroom teacher, Mr. Clarkson, ap

Once my dad saw the man inside the interrogation room, his eyes went wide. "Isn't…isn't he the criminal who tried to violate Remy? Why is he here?" he sputtered. When Remy saw the man's familiar face, her eyes shrunk. She tugged Blake's coat and said nervously, "Blake, I don't feel good. Can we go home first?"Normally, Blake would agree with everything she said. This time, however, he didn't. "Let's go home after we know why he did it, alright? Fiona… She's your sister, after all."When Remy saw there was no getting out of this, she gritted her teeth and hid behind the crowd. The officer in the interrogation room received his order, then looked at his pen before saying to Tom Smith, "Tell me everything you've just said again, Tom."Tom sat sprawled on the chair, legs wide open, and spat in disdain. It was clear he couldn't care less about his manners. "That's right! I'm the one who killed that girl!" he snarled. "She caused me to rot in prison for two years! I'm nothing once

Once I reopened my eyes, I was already in the form of a soul floating at home. The System's mechanical eyes twinkled. "There's still time before the portal opens. For now, you can observe what happened after you left your body in the form of a soul."I nodded. It had already been four hours since my passing. I had enough time to make a trip back, even if I moved slowly. Blake was frowning, displeased. "Where's Fiona? She said she's going to buy the cake, but I bet she's lazing around somewhere."My dad looked at his watch, his other hand perched on his waist. He wanted to say something when a call cut him off. When he picked it up, he was greeted with a stern, formal voice."Hello, is this the father of Ms. Fiona Rivers? We are from the precinct on the west side of the city. We need you to come over and identify a body."My dad's voice was icy, and he snapped impatiently, "Did Fiona put you up to this? Tell her to come home quickly! We don't have time to fool around!"The tone

It was Christmas. It was also my last day in this world. After thoroughly enjoying themselves overseas, my family finally came back."Mom, I want to go again next time! It was so much fun!" Remy chirped happily. Her excitement still hadn't dissipated, and she continued to talk about it once she was inside."Alright, alright. We'll go again if you want," my mom said indulgently, stroking Remy's head. Blake was behind them, helping with the bags filled with things Remy had bought, a smile on his face. When the happy family saw me sitting on the sofa, their smiles froze. My father faked a cough and asked, "Why didn't you go to school today?""It's Christmas. It's a school holiday," I answered calmly. "I thought you're not coming back."My mother rubbed her hand unnaturally. Then, she took out a bracelet from her purse and stuffed it in my hand. "Of course not! We came back because we knew it's Christmas. See? I have a gift for you too!"I glanced at the bracelet in my hand. It

Returning home from school, I discovered there was no one in the house. Silence reigned.Remy seemed to have calculated the time I would reach home and immediately sent me a string of pictures from inside an airplane. "Dad and Mom said I look too exhausted lately, so they're taking me to Snowland to ski! Only me, Fiona! Envy me!"The reason Remy sent me those pictures was because she wanted to see me get angry and throw a temper tantrum. However, I already understood my place in my family's hearts. I calmly switched my phone off and took out a pack of quick oats for dinner. In my original world, I learned to cook very early in life. After I came here, though, I rarely went into the kitchen thanks to my parents and brother doting on me. If I wanted to eat anything, I just had to tell them, and they would remember it. It would then appear on the dinner table the very next day.Mom's words had been: "You're our most cherished treasure. We can't bear to see you cook."When Remy ca

I stopped my mind from wandering. Once again, I faced reproach from my family. However, unlike in the past, I didn't try to fight for myself at all. I quietly packed up my breakfast for school. Blake looked at me in surprise, but his attention was quickly drawn elsewhere. My mom took Remy's hand, her tone doting and indulgent. "Don't worry, Remy. I've already told your sister to give you the recommendation for guaranteed admission. You don't have to work so hard at school. I'll be concerned if you do.""Guaranteed admission? Remy isn't qualified for it, right?" Blake said with a frown. My mom's smile froze. She glared at me angrily, displeased. "Why didn't you tell me that, Fiona? You made me happy for nothing! If you give up the recommendation and Remy doesn't get it, won't you be helping someone else instead? What were you thinking?"I had just finished packing up. Turning to my mom, I said indifferently, "Even if I told you, would you listen? You'd just think I'm making up
