The day finally arrived—the day she married Aldo Marino. When she visualized her wedding, she would always think of happiness, a soon-to-be husband that she loved, and an intimate ceremony with her loved ones. This wasn't what she had dreamed of. She stared at herself in the mirror, dressed in a beautiful satin dress that clung perfectly to her curves, the soft lace brushing softly over her skin, the beauty contrasting her heavy heart.

“Ready to go?” Melinda’s voice cut through her thoughts.

Liya turned to face Melinda who stood at the doorway with a neutral expression. The woman had been her shadow since the attack and while Liya was thankful for the support, her presence only pointed out that she was continuously in danger.

“I'm not sure I could say that but I can't back out either,” Liya said in a resolved voice.

Melinda looked at her with soft eyes only for a moment. “It’s not about being ready, it’s about doing what you can to survive.”

With that, Liya nodded and followed Melinda out of the room.

The celebration took place in the vast hall of Aldo’s mansion. The room was decorated with beautiful flower arrangements weaving over the railings and pillars. Only a few guests were in attendance; important allies and members of Aldo’s business, their faces stern and cold.

Liya glanced over the crowd as she walked down the aisle with her brother who had a remorseful and ashamed look on his face. He had apologized to his sister so many times that she lost count.

Currently, her eyes were glued to Aldo who stood at the end of the aisle, dressed in a fitted dark suit with his hair gelled back leaving his defined features on display for her to fawn over. He was certainly handsome. His electric blue eyes stared at her so intensely that it made her nervous.

Aside from that, his expression wasn't what she had expected for a wedding day. He looked so detached and uninterested. He looked more like a robot than a human being and she couldn't do anything about it but hope for better days ahead.

As the officiant commenced the ceremony, her eyes ran over Aldo’s face, taking note of every detail. His eyes caught hers and her breath caught in her throat. Luckily for her, the officiant's words cut them out of the moment.

“We’re gathered here today to join Aldo and Liya in holy matrimony,” he said, his voice sounding through the quiet hall.

As he carried on, one could tell this was simply a transactional affair. No emotions were involved, no mention of love or feelings. When it was her turn to speak, she avoided Aldo’s eyes as she said “I do” in a hollow voice.

When it got to Aldo’s turn, his silence stretched longer than she was comfortable with. She held her breath and looked into his eyes which were filled with something like anger or regret and she wondered if he was going to back out at this very moment.

While thoughts of rejection and humiliation ran through her mind, he finally spoke in a firm and neutral voice. “I do.”

After the ceremony came to an end, Aldo took Liya’s hand in his, leading her away from the altar, down the aisle, and toward the doors. He didn't wait for the clapping to stop or even give room for congratulatory words from the guests.

As they left the hall, Liya couldn't hold back her irritation. “Is this it? Is this how it’s going to be?” she asked him sternly. “Cold, empty, and without meaning?”

Aldo stopped immediately and turned to face her, looking at her like she was a strange being. “I don't know what you were expecting but this isn't a fairy tale. It is not one of those romance books you like to read where the characters are hopelessly in love with each other and live happily ever after. No, this is reality. You married me to save your brother and I married you to be useful,” he said in a stern voice. He didn't want to give her any ideas.

Liya flinched as if he had hit her. “Useful? Is that all I'm good for? A puppet you can manipulate as you wish?”

Aldo sucked in a breath. “That's not what I meant. You're…you’re more than that,” he said trying to avoid the emotions, he didn't have time for that. “We both know what we got into, in terms of marriage. Let's stick to that. I can't have you being more than that right now.”

Liya looked at him and couldn't lie she felt her heart breaking a little bit. She had hoped what started as a transaction between them could grow into something better– maybe not lovers but friends for a start. That hope was just shattered even though she was positive about the way he looked at her…like they could be more.

“Why are you against it,” Liya asked him in a quiet voice.

“I’m not against anything. I'm telling you it won’t happen. Nothing will change between us,” he said forcefully like he was trying to convince himself more than her. “Let’s go. We have to make an appearance at the reception.”

During the reception which was held at the dining hall, Liya felt like she was in a business meeting rather than a wedding celebration. She sat beside Aldo, her hands on her lap and her nerves working overtime.

“Smile,” Aldo whispered only to her hearing.

“My emotions are anything but happy so how can I do that?” Liya said, forcing a smile that looked more like a grimace.

“Put those aside. Appearances mean everything in this world,” Aldo said as he leaned in to whisper in her ears. “If we look weak then we are as good as dead. Now I believe you can do better than whatever you just did with your face. Smile Liya.”

Goosebumps erupted over her flesh as his hot breath fanned her ears. Gathering herself together, she gave a breathtaking smile that left Aldo stunned. If this was her role in this charade, then she’d play it well.

As the night dragged on, Liya excused herself from the table to get some fresh air. She needed to breathe. The pretending and fake smiles were giving her a headache. She soon found herself on the balcony holding onto the railings as the cool night air and the scent of flowers from the garden below washed over her.

Her moment of peace didn't last as she felt as though someone was watching her. Before she could turn around to go back inside, a strong hand clamped over her mouth.

Aldo slammed his fist on the glass side table one more time. He didn’t know what he was going to gain from any of that, but his bleeding knuckles seemed to give him the peace that he had been looking for. The flow of blood managed to relieve him somehow. But the thought of Liya not coming back to the house only reminded him of how much of a jerk he was. The smell of whatever Aria was preparing in the kitchen filled the house. He could tell that it wasn’t going to be nice but if he dared mention that to her she was going to be mad at him. He would make it up to her somehow. The thought of Alana now roaming the house like it belonged to her again made his hands clench into fists again as he headed downstairs. Liya was the lady of the house, and nothing was going to change it. Whether she was present or not. Alana could only dream. He felt all she needed at that point was space and time to reflect. He was willing to give it to her as long as she was going to come back to him. She could

Everything in Liya was telling her to go back to Aldo’s mansion. But she knew that she couldn’t do that. Not after all the emotional slap that she had received. He didn’t say it to her face, but she felt insulted when he said he would let his ex-wife stay in the house. That was the one thing that she knew she wasn't going to tolerate. The air in her lungs found it difficult to come out. She held on tightly to the edges of the chair. How was she supposed to get on? She had tied everything to them. Her life, her future plans, and even her suffering. She knew that she was never going to be able to blame Aldo for her abuse by Damian but she knew they would be her support system. Especially when her brother was not helpful in any way.. Even she finally knew that there must have been a reason why Damian brought her and Aldo together. But then, why has he been quiet since she was rescued? He must have found out that she was out of the Marino mansion. He must have had a reason for keeping h

“What is she talking about?” Liya whispered. Aldo was lost for words. He didn't know what to say to her. Or what she had actually even heard.“You already know that Aldo and I were involved in the past,” Alana started, and she walked towards Liya. Liya couldn’t help but take a step back. She still had her eyes fixed on Aldo as she waited to hear what Aldo had to say about the bomb that had just dropped. But even he was looking down at the little boy. “Who is he? What relationship does he have with Aldo?” Liya asked, now looking at Alana again. Liya felt like she was the only one who could give her a proper answer. “He's Aldo’s child. And I’m here to drop him off.”Liya dug her hands into her hair. She couldn't believe what she was hearing. She didn’t even know what she was supposed to think, but she knew that she didn’t want Alana there. The child was someone she had loved spending time with during her stay at Damian’s place, not Alana. She was willing to take care of him until they

  • Desperate Measures   CHAPTER 99: His Child?

It was the first time that Aldo had killed somebody and felt guilty as hell about it. Not that he was guilty of killing Frank. He was guilty that he couldn’t do more to make him suffer. He had thought about taking Frank to his warehouse in the woods and chopping him into a thousand and one pieces. But it was too late to consider anything again. He just wished to go home and take care of Liya the way she deserved. He didn’t care if he was going to have to leave everything behind. Damian was still out there. Aldo even went over to his house, but he wasn’t there.“The coward,” he had whispered. He didn’t really expect much from Damian. But he at least expected him to face him like the man he always claimed to be. Aldo knew that it was only going to be a while before he came out looking for Liya. That only made him realize that getting him married to Liya was something that Damian had planned right from the beginning. But why he went to such lengths to unite them is something Aldo doesn'

Liya quickly had her bath, dressing up in a black gown. She waited until Aria headed to the library with Melinda before she even attempted to pick up her phone to call Lillian again. It didn’t cross her mind for once that Lillian might have just been trying to bait her. She knew that Lillian was Xavier’s cousin and she was sure Xavier would have told her just how dangerous Aldo was. His calm demeanor wasn’t something to play with. She was heading out of the house when Melinda walked in. Melinda looked at her in shock. “Is everything okay, Liya?” she asked, and Liya nodded quickly. The last thing she needed was anybody questioning her about where she was heading. “I just wanted to quickly head out and get a few things,” she said, and Melinda shook her head still. “You know that Sir Aldo had asked me to take care of you,” she said while shaking her head. “I should have put someone else in charge of looking after Aria.”Liya smiled. It was good to know that she was loved and that peo

  • Desperate Measures   CHAPTER 97: His Care

Aldo had purposely been avoiding every event that included him going out in public. He received countless calls from different people asking about his well-being but he was comfortable with remaining in the shadows for the main time. He needed some time away from the public to lay a foundation for a greater plan. He didn’t even leave the house. He left everything that had to do with work to Melinda. She was in charge of making sure that everything ran properly, and so far, everything was perfect. He soaked himself and filled his time with taking care of Liya. Even Liya was shocked that he was there with her at every second but she was comfortable with it. She didn't grumble because it was only his presence she could put up with at that moment. “Don’t you have to go to work?” Liya finally asked on the fourth day, and Aldo frowned. “What happened? Don't you want me by your side? Or do you want to be alone? I would rather be here with you while you go through everything. Or do you wan
