Chapter 7

Author: Anonymous
The silence that followed was suffocating. It was broken only by the sound of Toby playing with the newly acquainted spirit of a little boy in the ward.

I watched Samuel intently, curious about how he would react to hearing news of my death from someone else again.

But, just as when Jessie told him I had died, his reaction was the same. He furrowed his brows at first, then his lips curled into a smirk.

"Well, who would've thought you would care so much about my wife, Mr. Jones? I don't know whether she's dead or alive. Yet, you seem to know better. Well, how did you know? Did she tell you herself? Or have you two been sneaking around to see each other under my nose all these years?

"Why? Is it more thrilling this way? Well, I don't care. She's so filthy that I wouldn't even touch her. If you want her, you can have her."

Something in me shattered completely. My heart ached, and my eyes stung. I guess I was overcome with the urge to cry. But now, I was nothing but a spirit. How coul

Violet left looking pale. She seemed to be just as unhinged, alternating between laughing and crying randomly at intervals.Samuel returned to the house and carefully cleaned my and Toby's urns.I forgot to mention that he had gone to the funeral home a few days ago and collected our ashes. The urns had accumulated a thick layer of dust, which he meticulously wiped away with a cloth.By now, I could no longer hold onto Toby. He had completely broken free from his earthly ties and could go wherever he wanted. But I was still trapped around Samuel.I knew it was time to say goodbye to Toby. That night, I held him in my arms after he'd spent the day playing.I told him a story about the next life. I said it was a world where we wouldn't be wandering, transparent souls. Instead, we would be normal people who could taste delicious food, play joyfully with friends, and attend school. His eyes lit up as he listened and said, "I'll wait for you in the next life, Mommy!"I hugged him tig

  • Digging up My Bones   Chapter 10

That night, Samuel didn't leave. He slept in the room where Toby and I had once slept.I had no idea what was going through his mind. After years of ignoring us, who was he performing this act of sentimentality for now?The next morning, Samuel drove into town and bought some farming tools like sickles and shovels. When he returned, he rolled up his sleeves and started clearing the weeds in the overgrown courtyard. It was July, and it was the peak of summer. The sun blazed relentlessly, and there wasn't a hint of a breeze. Samuel focused solely on cutting the weeds. He trimmed the unruly roses and hydrangeas as if he couldn't feel the scorching heat. When he was thirsty, he drank bottled water. When he was hungry, he ate the bread he'd bought in town. He meticulously cleaned the rooms that hadn't been touched in three years, leaving only the white chalk outlines of me and Toby untouched.Sometimes, he lay beside the outlines. He stretched out his arms as if pretending to hold me a

Samuel collapsed onto the couch. He shook his head repeatedly as he muttered, "Impossible. I haven't forgiven her yet. How could she die?"I laughed through invisible tears. So, the reason I wasn't allowed to die was because he hadn't forgiven me yet.He picked up the phone from the floor and reopened his photo gallery to stare at the one and only picture of him and Toby together. As he looked at it, his shoulders began to tremble. Two drops of tears fell onto the phone screen.Suddenly, he stood up and bolted out of his villa. His hands were shaking as he drove. Once again, his car stopped outside the small farmhouse where Toby and I had lived. In just a few days, he had been here more times than in all the previous years combined.I didn't know whether to cry or laugh at that. This time, he opened the gate and walked straight to the front door of the house. He stood there for over ten seconds before pushing the door that had been closed for three years open. With a creak, the

After freezing the bank account, Samuel didn't receive my plea for help but instead got news from the private investigator. The investigator sent him several pieces of information, including screenshots of local news articles. One of the headlines read: "Shocking! Mother and son were found dead in their home days after their passing. Neighbors discovered their dead bodies."The article wasn't very long. While it didn't specify the village, it mentioned the name of the town where the village was located. The accompanying photo was of the small farmhouse where I had lived.Samuel was able to recognize it. He stared at the screenshot, frozen in place. He refused to believe it.He pulled out his phone and called me again, only to hear that the number was no longer in service. He then frantically tried calling me on WhatsApp. But of course, no one answered.Suddenly, it seemed as if something occurred to him. He opened his banking app on his phone and navigated to the account linked t

Samuel grabbed his car keys and rushed out. Toby and I were forced to follow him to the hospital. In his hurried dash, Samuel collided with a man in the hospital lobby who was dressed in an expensive tailored suit.I recognized him—it was Daniel.Daniel stumbled back two steps. Once he steadied himself and saw it was Samuel, his face showed a hint of surprise. He jeered, "Well, if it isn't the man of the hour in Southton—Mr. Samuel Hoffman? What brings you to the hospital so late at night? What's the hurry?"Samuel muttered an apology hastily before bypassing him and running straight to the elevator.Daniel, however, was relentless. He followed Samuel at a brisk pace. He trailed him all the way to the inpatient department of the hematology ward. When they reached Violet's room, she wasn't there.
