Chapter 1

Three months after my Alpha mate disappeared, I searched the entire world desperately for him.

I found him in a bar, his childhood friend in his arms, feeding him wine mouth to mouth.

"The Alpha is confirmed dead. We will now begin preparations for the Alpha Election."

"Luna, are we truly giving up?" asked the elder on the other end of the line, his tone laced with disbelief.

I looked into the private room through the door crack, where my Alpha was caressing Desiree's cheek indulgently.

My heart stung with pain.

With a choked voice, I replied, "It has been three months. The rescue party we sent out all came back with nothing. No matter how much it hurts me, I must accept that he's dead. Not to mention, our pack must have an Alpha."

What use was an Alpha who abandoned both his pack and his Luna, even if he was found?

After arranging the process for appointing the next Alpha, I hung up and returned to my private room.

When my friend saw my red eyes, she passed me a glass of wine. "Bethany, I know you're hurting, but Sampson has gone missing for three months now. It's time for you to accept reality."

My hands trembled as I took the wine from her. I swallowed the entire glass despite the hurt I felt inside.

The drink was bitter, but it wasn't as bitter as what I was feeling. I held back my tears as I asked, "Would anyone fake their disappearance just to deceive their Luna?"

Thinking I was rambling because I missed Sampson too much, my friend sighed. "Stop thinking about it. No one could be so shameless. If that were true, then they would be better off dead."

I nodded blankly and stood up. "You're right. Let's consider him dead."

I left without looking back and returned home.

There were traces of Sampson and me in every corner of the empty house.

Two sets of tableware remained on the table. Just a day before his disappearance, Sampson had excitedly discussed the Full Moon Festival with me. We would become one under the light from the Moon Goddess and have a great night together.

But the very next day, I received news that Sampson had gone missing.

I stared at the empty room and sat on the couch, next to the doll that he had made for me. He had stitched it using the fur he had shed, and told me the doll could keep me company whenever I missed him.

As Sampson's irritated words rang in my ears again, those tender memories mixed with the impatient tone he had today.

"Bethany was such a gentle she-wolf before marriage, but she got more and more controlling after we married. She got even more clingy, too. I made her Luna so she could manage the pack, not me! She-wolves forget their place after getting a bit of power. I'm going to teach her a lesson with my disappearance. She'll know what she should and shouldn't control!"

Desiree lay in his arms, passing the wine in her mouth into Sampson's. He didn't hesitate to accept her gesture.

Grinning, she said, "Friends are so much better, right? I never try to limit you. You can do whatever you want. I even got the disguise potions from the witch for you."

"Of course! You're my best friend. Still, the potion's duration is too short. I'm back to my original appearance after a short time."

"I have more than enough—enough for you to have fun for a few more days."

They kept calling each other best friends, as if it were completely normal, even as their bodies were wrapped in each other's embrace.

Just thinking about it was enough to make me feel nauseous.

I tore the doll apart and tossed it in the trash.

I couldn't understand it. If Sampson was unhappy with me, he could simply sever our mate bond. Why did he have to fake an accident and go missing during patrol?

The next day, I called for a meeting. Using my status as the Luna, I announced that the Alpha had died and that I would be preparing for his funeral. We would choose the pack's next Alpha from among those who had the blood of an Alpha.

The moment I made the announcement, Sampson's close friends couldn't remain calm anymore and started questioning me.

"How could you hold Sampson's funeral without confirming he's truly dead?"

"Bethany, have you gone mad? Sampson isn't dead!"

"How could you strip Sampson's title as the Alpha? Aren't you worried he'll return furious?"

Facing their outbursts, I merely chuckled coldly.

"He's already dead. Can he feel anger at all?"

I ignored their objections without a care in the world.

"I'm the Alpha's mate," I said calmly, "so of course I can judge if he's dead or alive. From now on, the Luna will manage the pack's official matters. On the day of Sampson's funeral, I'll discuss choosing the next Alpha with the elders."

Once the meeting ended, I left Sampson's angry friends. The wolves started whispering heatedly, but it didn't concern me.

The rescue team searched for Sampson for three days, but there was no trace of him at all. Desiree was already on the verge of collapse, and she cried every day. Looking at her, I felt no sympathy at all. She had been the one who came up with this plan, after all. I cried for three months when I first searched for Sampson. There was only despair in my life. And yet, when it was her turn, Desiree couldn't even handle it in merely several days. On the fourth day, Sampson suddenly appeared. He immediately embraced me, trembling."Bethany, I know you still love me. Otherwise, you wouldn't have searched for me for three days and nights. I know what I did is wrong… It's all Desiree's idea! This time, I made sure she couldn't find me. You shouldn't have come. That way, I'd stay hidden for a little while longer so she could feel all your pain. Still… I'm happier that you're here." Sampson was still rambling when Lambert punched him to the ground. "Stay away from my Luna, Samps

After that, I never saw Sampson again for a long time. I poured myself into the affairs of my pack. I would either call or meet up with Lambert in person to speak with him about work. Over time, the two of us grew closer, and the awkwardness between us slowly disappeared. Instead of associates, we were more like friends. One day, when I arrived at Lambert's office to talk about some business regarding the Moonstones, I accidentally saw a photo frame on his desk. On his desk was a photo of me from my school days. What was going on? Why would Lambert have a photo of me on his desk? From the angle, it was obvious that it was taken secretly. He had even framed it carefully. Lambert froze for a little bit before nervously covering the photo. "It's nothing. It's someone else." His panic had only confirmed what I already suspected. I blinked slowly, then said meaningfully, "Oh, I see. It was someone else. Originally, I was going to ask if you wanted to date me. But I guess tha

Sampson was curling up on my doorstep, shivering in the cold. When he saw me, his eyes lit up immediately. I frowned. "What are you doing at my house?" Sampson quickly ran over and grabbed my hand, begging me, "I know I'm wrong, Bethany. Please don't leave me! I'm the only one who loves you." When he felt that our mate bond was severed after I left, he panicked and began to find me. However, all I could feel as I looked at his pathetic act was nausea. Sampson's eyes were red as he said, "Bethany, I've already gotten rid of Desiree from the Pack. This is your favorite cake. I'll obey everything you say from now on. So please, don't leave me!" I yanked my hand away and knocked the cake to the ground, and sneered coldly, "No thanks. Anything you've touched disgusts me." He once called me clingy and micromanaging. He wanted to leave me, even if he had to play dead for it. But now, the very same man was kneeling in front of me and begging for my forgiveness. "I once loved

I had just left the venue when Lambert called out from behind me."Where are you going? I'll give you a ride."I looked at him, then said meaningfully, "Lambert, I'm going to sever my mate bond with Sampson."Lambert raised his eyebrow. "And?""So, there's no longer any connection between us. There's no need for us to meet anymore," I replied.Lambert gave a faint smile. At the corner of his lips, there was still blood from the fight that hadn't dried off. He had been spending a long time in the forest and had gotten used to freedom. Even after he had become an Alpha, he would still have a Roguish air about him."I did help you. I even got injured for your sake. You can't just ditch me now after you're done, right? Ouch, my head hurts so much… I must have taken a hit there." He frowned dramatically, as if he were in a lot of pain. While he made it sound like he was in a bad state, the blood on him was all Sampson's blood.I sighed exasperatedly. "What do you want?"I had to a

As soon as Sampson heard I wanted to sever our mate bond, his face turned pale.In a trembling voice, he begged, "No… You can't, Bethany! I won't agree with severing the mate bond! I really love you!"I didn't give him any chances, and snapped, "You said you love me, but you can still sleep with another she-wolf without a care in the world. You can keep a love like that to yourself."All the Alphas from the other Packs who worked with him had been watching from below. It was no longer possible to get their support. The only cooperation he had left was the Eastplain Pack—the pack I was originally from.Sampson was already isolated, with no one on his side. He stood there with his chest heaving, and then gave a mocking laugh. "You said I cheated, but do you have proof? Your footage can only prove that I spent the night with a friend at home."As I surveyed Sampson's smug expression, it dawned upon me just how shameless he truly was—I couldn't believe I only found out now. "Bethan

Sampson rushed onto the stage and pulled me into his arms, trembling as he called my name."I'm back, Bethany. You have no idea how much I missed you! I was attacked by Rogues during my patrol, and they slashed my stomach with a silver blade. Luckily, a good person took me to a hospital. That was how I could come back in one piece to see you again. I'm all better now. If you don't believe me, look!"He lifted his shirt and showed a nasty scar across his abdomen. I wondered who painted it on him.I said nothing, and simply watched his performance with a blank face. When Sampson saw that I didn't react, a flicker of embarrassment appeared on his face.I let out a cold snicker. "Are you done? Is that good person who sent you to the hospital Desiree?"Simpson's expression froze.Even now, he was still playing dumb. "What are you talking about? I don't understand you. Your mate is back… Shouldn't you be happy?"Seeing how shameless he was, I laughed. Unable to hold back the pain
