Vivian's POV

Soon, a platter of ribs was served.

Half of the platter was garlic-butter ribs, while the other side was smothered in mushroom cream sauce. They were both Sasha Mercer's favorites.

Callum Fletcher picked up a piece of meat covered in mushroom cream sauce and put it on my plate.

I pushed the meat aside. "Callum, I'm allergic to mushrooms."

He was stunned for a moment. Then, he took the piece of meat from my plate, scraped off the sauce, and then placed it back.

I fell silent.

Frowning, he whispered to me, "Give it a rest, will you? You can't expect everyone to just accommodate you, right? Stop being so selfish and be considerate for once."

With that, he turned away and leaned in close to Sasha as they discussed which spot served better ribs and steaks.

I set down my knife and fork.

The piece of meat on my plate was turning cold, and its fat was congealing into a layer of white film.

Callum's mother, Brenda Hayes, smiled awkwardly as she put a mozzarella stick on my plate. "Vivian, try this. Those two grew up together, so please don't mind them."

"Thank you, Mrs. Fletcher." Smiling at Brenda, I picked up the gift sitting next to me. "Mr. and Mrs. Fletcher, here's a little something—"

Sasha smacked her forehead. "Oh, right! I knew I was forgetting something. I actually brought gifts for Callum's parents."

She took out an exquisite box from her bag, opening it to reveal a pair of expensive emerald earrings. "Callum told me that Mr. Fletcher had given Mrs. Fletcher a pair of heirloom sapphire earrings when they were young, but Callum accidentally broke them. So, I thought these emerald ones would be perfect for Mrs. Fletcher.

"Also, this vintage tea set is for Mr. Fletcher. Callum helped me pick out these."

Brenda carefully caressed the earrings with uncontainable joy in her gaze.

I tightened my grip on the paper bag in my hands.

Callum had never told me any of that before.

Last month, I kept pestering him with the same question, "What do your parents like?"

He just pinched my cheek and said with a smile, "I'm sure they'll love anything their daughter-in-law gets for them."

Back then, I even took it as a romantic sentiment.

As it turned out, he had helped Sasha pick out the perfect gifts, but it had never crossed his mind that she might steal the spotlight.

I quietly hid the paper bag behind me, then subconsciously looked at Callum.

He was staring at the milkshake Sasha had ordered. He had a reprimanding tone in his voice as he said, "Sasha, you really should get something healthier."

Sasha stuck out her tongue. "It's just once in a while, anyway."

They seemed to enjoy the meal thoroughly.

After paying the bill, I went back to the booth to find it completely empty. All I could see was my lone paper bag lying on the floor.

My phone vibrated. It was a voice message from Callum.

But when I played it, Sasha's sickly sweet voice rang out, "Vivian, it's raining right now, so Callum is taking us home first."

Callum added, "Vivian, you live nearby, so just hail a ride, and you'll be home in no time. Tell me when you get home, okay? Don't make me worry."

I stood at the entrance of the steakhouse. It was pouring rain, and thunder was rumbling right above my head.

He didn't even leave an umbrella for me.

Still, it didn't matter.

I didn't need his stupid umbrella anymore.

Third-Person POVCallum turned around.Matthew was in his 60s, his back slightly hunched and his hair turned silver. He was slowly pulling out a stack of cash from his pocket. The crisp bills were held together by a white rubber band.Matthew handed the money to Callum, his rough fingers slightly curled around it. His knuckles were thick with age. "When I fractured my bone last year, you lent Vivian 300 dollars. I'm paying you back."His voice was quivering a little. "Can you please stop pestering her?"Callum suddenly remembered that on the day Matthew fractured his bone, Vivian couldn't afford the medical bills, so she had gingerly asked Callum if she could take some money from their savings account.Callum was upset when he heard that, so he had deliberately said some hurtful things to her.He had simply watched as she broke down into tears. It annoyed him, so he transferred 300 dollars to her. Now, as he stared at the money right in front of him, he felt like he had just b

Vivian's POVI felt exceptionally relaxed after the breakup. I no longer had to go through the agony of tearing myself up inside. After being promoted to team lead, my pay had increased quite a bit as well.Callum had transferred 30,000 dollars to me.I gave him back the extra 2,000 dollars. I didn't want the extra money to be the cause of any conflict in the future. I didn't even want to have anything to do with him anymore.Soon, Evan arranged for our playmate from the trip to join the company. The playmate bowed a little as he said in a clear and pleasant voice, "Nice to meet you, Ms. Gray."I stared at his name, Rowan Cole, on the ID badge. Then, I fell deep in thought.Rowan quietly stood at the side, meeting my gaze with an unwavering look. There wasn't even a trace of overstepping in him.Right in his first week on the job, he was already showcasing an astonishing level of competence. We worked quite well together, too.On many occasions, I found that our thought patt

Third-Person POVCallum noticed that Vivian had blocked him.He stared blankly at his phone. He never thought things would get so serious this time that Vivian would be furious enough to slap him.Even now, his cheeks were burning from the slap.In the past, he had always used to pin Sasha's mistakes on Vivian.Vivian would get mad at him as well, but she was easy to convince. She just couldn't bring herself to be mad at him for long.He looked around him, his tense nerves suddenly relaxing. Then, he curled his lips into a self-deprecating smile.Sure enough, Vivian didn't just pack up and leave."After all, how could she actually leave me?" Callum thought. "Things just got a bit out of hand, and she must be sulking right now. But still, I've really crossed the line this time."He decided that he would pamper Vivian once she had calmed down. Then, he would promise her that he would never let her take the blame for Sasha again. He took a deep breath, trying to suppress the in

Vivian's POVGloria changed the subject. "However, management wants to sweep this incident under the rug. You know, they need people over at the Sunshire branch."I nodded. I didn't mind it at all.Either way, once they left for Sunshire, I wouldn't see them ever again. However, since I was dropping straight into the development department as an outsider, it would definitely ruffle some feathers. I already had a lot on my plate.Gloria said, "I'll give you a few days off. Once you're back, head straight to the development department and report for duty."When I exited the office, Callum came up to me again. "Vivian, I'm really sorry. Please forgive me…"I shoved him aside. "Go away."He followed me like a poor little puppy.I started packing up the stuff on my desk.Callum asked, "You got fired? But the software was launched as scheduled, right? Surely that cleared your record…"I picked up the bobblehead on my desk and tossed it straight into the trash can.His fingers tre

Vivian's POVCallum forced a smile on his face. "But the approval's already come through, and it's been officially stamped. We can't change it anymore."I didn't say a word."Callum! Peel this orange for me." Outside, Sasha was calling for him.Gazing into my eyes, Callum closed his eyes and leaned in to kiss me.But I dodged him.Sasha called again, "Callum Fletcher!"He opened his eyes, a hint of impatience flashing across his gaze as he responded to Sasha, "Fine, I'm coming."He touched my face, then walked to the door. Then, he paused and turned to look at me for a moment. "Vivian, don't overthink it. You'll love Sunshire. I'm sure of it."Sasha was the one who liked Sunshire.I thought, "Callum, I'm not going to Sunshire anymore."…The next day, when I clocked in, I noticed something was off about the atmosphere in the office. Everyone had a dark expression on their face. The software would be launching in less than three hours, but it suddenly crashed. The developer

Vivian's POVSasha and Callum froze simultaneously.I recalled the knowing smiles the two shared at the steakhouse two days ago. Before going, I had asked Callum in confusion, "Don't people usually meet their partners' parents in their homes? Why would we go to a steakhouse?"He had been quite open about it. "Sasha said that a nice steak dinner would be perfect for breaking the ice."Back to the present, Sasha called out, "Vivian…" She had gone pale in the face, and she could barely stand upright. In contrast, Callum seemed quite calm. "Vivian, when did you get here?"I looked quietly at him, noticing his gradually quickening breathing. He could barely keep up his mask of indifference.I said softly, "I just got here."The two sighed in relief almost at the same time.I raised an eyebrow. "What were you guys doing in there?"I had just finished speaking when the two immediately tensed up and denied in unison, "Nothing!"I let out a chuckle. That was interesting. As it tu
