"Hey," we both greeted at the same time, each equally shocked to see the other. I could hear Doris turn from what she was doing her and her aging voice came next.

"Blake, honey. I've been waiting for you all day, what took you so long?"

He shuffled forward, removing the earphones and jamming his hands into his pockets, his eyes were on me all through. The store suddenly felt way too small and I was experiencing strange claustrophobia.

"I was running errands all day, ma'am," he replied, now taking his eyes off me and directing his gaze to her. He moved closer so he could lean on the counter, close to Doris. "I'm sorry."
