ALEXIS

“Xavier?”

Nothing.

I pulled the phone away from my ear and stared at the screen. The call was still connected, but all I could hear was his breathing. It was rough and uneven, like he was struggling to get air.

“Xavier, talk to me.”

There was a faint scraping sound on the other end.

Then silence.

My heart began pounding.

“What warehouse?” I asked, even though I wasn't sure he could still hear me. “Xavier, where are you?”

A loud noise suddenly came through the phone, followed by a groan.

ALEXISFor several seconds, I just stood there.I couldn't seem to make my body move.Come alone, Alexis.I read the message again. Then again. As if staring at it long enough would somehow change the words. My fingers had gone cold.Another message appeared. You have one hour.My stomach dropped. One hour. That was all they were giving me.I looked around the warehouse. The two men were still lying on the floor. One of them wasn't moving at all. Xavier's phone was still where I'd found it, its cracked screen stained with his blood. His blood.I swallowed hard.My eyes burned, and for a second, I had to squeeze them shut.“Please be alive.”The words slipped out before I could stop them.I had no idea whether Xavier could hear me.I didn't even know if he'd still be alive when I found him.But I couldn't let myself think about that. Not yet.If I broke down now, I wouldn't be able to do anything.I wiped my palms against my jeans and looked down at the file. They wanted this.Whatever

I called him again, but the call went straight to voicemail.“Fuck.”I hurried outside and got into my car, my mind racing as I started the engine. I didn't know which warehouse he was talking about. There were dozens of abandoned warehouses scattered around the city.I called him again.Nothing.I tightened my grip around the steering wheel.“Think, Alexis. Think.”He had sounded different. Not scared. He h

XAVIERI drove for almost an hour before I finally reached the warehouse. It was hidden behind several old buildings, away from the main road, exactly the kind of place nobody would notice unless they were looking for it. I parked my car a few meters away and looked at the building. The place looked abandoned. The windows were dusty, some of them broken, and the large metal doors were covered in rust. I got out of the car and walked toward the entrance, keeping my phone in my hand. Mom's warning kept playing in my head. Don't go alone. If someone is still watching you, they already know you're going there.I pushed the door, and it opened with a loud creak. I stepped inside. The warehouse was dark and cold, so I turned on my phone's flashlight and slowly looked around. There were old wooden boxes everywhere, metal shelves covered with dust and several cabinets pushed against the walls. I walked deeper inside.“Dad?”My voice echoed through the empty warehouse, but there was no respons

XAVIER I got into my car, but I didn't start the engine immediately. I sat there with both hands resting on the steering wheel, staring at nothing. Mom's reaction kept replaying in my head. She had known something. I was sure of it. She could have denied it without looking at me like that, but she hadn't. The moment I mentioned Helene, something changed in her face. It was fear. Not surprise. Not confusion. Fear. I started the engine and pulled out of the driveway. I didn't know where I was going at first. I just knew I couldn't sit at home pretending everything was fine. I had spent years believing I had left that part of my life behind. My father's family, the Lecraes, the old house, the arguments, the things I had refused to talk about. I thought I had escaped all of it. Apparently, I hadn't. My phone rang while I was driving. I glanced at the screen. The property manager. I answered through the car system. “What did you find?” “Sir, there's something else you shoul

  • Discarded To Desired: Out Of My Way Ex Husband    I'll Set Things Right.

XAVIERI drove through the city with the documents lying on the passenger seat, but I couldn't get the name out of my head. The longer I thought about it, the more uneasy I became. My father's former attorney had handled some of the family's most sensitive affairs before everything fell apart, and he was one of the few people who would have known exactly how to access the old property records. There was no way he had done this without a reason.I reached for my phone and called the property manager again. He answered after a few rings.“Sir?”“Have you managed to locate him?”“Not yet.”“Find him.”“We're trying, sir.”“Then try harder.”I ended the call and tossed the phone onto the passenger seat. I wasn't interested in excuses. Someone had gone through the trouble of creating a company, forging my signature, purchasing my property and transferring it to Helene. There had to be a reason behind it, and I intended to find out what it was. Before I could think any further, my phone sta

ALEXIS “Thank you, Adam.” I shook the hand of my divorce lawyer, a middle-aged Italian man.He smiled. “Don't be. At seven months pregnant, every time I moved, it felt like I was doing a chore, but I still forced myself out of bed. At this time everyone else was still asleep.I rubbed my s
