"No, no!" I said fervently. "You don't have to stress yourself by flying all the way."

"Something's always coming up, I'm sick of it," the voice protested.

"Just give me a few more days to sort myself out. Please don't ask what it is. Just be patient for me, please."

The voice begrudgingly agreed. "Call me immediately you have a change of heart. Don't even hesitate."

"I won't."

On cue, James entered the room as I was ending the call. His eyes curiously strayed to my phone but he did not ask. I sensed that he was in a hurry what with how he was bouncing on the balls of his feet. Of course. He couldn't wait to be reunited with Mona. I grunted with disappointment and disgust. I didn't even know why he bothered showing up here. He had nothing to prove to me, did he?

"I have to go baby shopping with Mona. Get yourself discharged and wait for me at home." Just like that, he was off once again without even waiting for a response.

I did not want to be immediately discharged however. I had a sense that James had changed all the locks at the villa and that the possibility of him trapping me inside was too high.

So as not to raise any premature suspicions on his part, I paid for the two days worth of hospital bills with his card. As far as he was concerned, I was already home. I knew he wasn't going to call to confirm.

I spent seven more days at the hospital. James never made it home even once during that period. On social media, I kept seeing videos and pictures of his romantic affair with Mona. He took her to the most romantic spots across the country and spoiled her rotten with his misdirected affection.

Finally, I made the decision to go home before my secret contact could make good on his resolve to come get me out of this hellhole himself. James had posted another picture with him and Mona on a beach at sunrise, passionately kissing.

I left a sarcastic comment on the picture wishing him a happy life with his mistress. I received quick replies from other profiles.

#aren't you his actual wife?

#wait, for real? The woman in the picture is not his wife???

#why is he doting on another woman?

My phone buzzed. It was James. I did not want to answer but my phone incessantly rang.

"Delete your comment," was the first thing he said to me after seven whole days.

"Why should I when I am truly happy for you?" I retorted.

"Since you want to continue to be childish, I am blocking you from all my social media platforms." He abruptly cut the call. It wasn't like I cared what he did with his social media. I checked myself out of the hospital with my own money.

Leaving, I passed the OBGYN department and spotted James doting on Mona. All the nurses were praising him for his masculine attentiveness. At least I knew now where James' priorities truly lay.

In our fifth year of marriage, I had gotten pregnant. James told me to abort it because he wasn't ready.

"It's alright James. We… we are married after all. I'll carry the pregnancy to term alone and even raise our baby alone for when you eventually come around. When our baby finally arrives, I'm sure you'll have a change of heart." I thought it was just his nerves. How very wrong I was!

"Are you deaf or do you no longer speak English? It's too early for us to have a child!"

"James, we've been married for five years."

"I don't care. I'll call the family doctor right now. He will take care of this."

I snatched the phone from him. "If you don't want the baby, I do. I've already told your father and he is excited. Maybe you should be the one to tell him you want an abortion and see what he says."

Darkness flashed in James' eyes. His sixty five year old father, Patrick Simmons, who oversaw the family business, was a conventional man who could disinherit James just for thinking about abortion. Feeling victorious, I turned my back to walk down the staircase. I had underestimated how vindictive James had gotten.

A hand— his hand, pushed me from behind. I lurched, losing my breath and balance as I fell.

I lost the baby. Patrick never truly forgave me for my carelessness on the stairs. He had no idea it was his own son's fault.

"Ronica!" Mona calling me with her fake sweetness brought me out of my reminisce. I watched James' face contort upon seeing me.

"Did you follow us?" he snapped.

I scoffed. "You are not that important."

"Wait," James said before I could turn on my heels and leave. A flicker of jealousy flashed through Mona's eyes, her grip on his arm tightened. She was a viper protecting her territory. I could sense the warning for me to back off in her eyes. "Since you are already here somehow, ride home with us. You claim I'm not that important but you got discharged seven days ago. What else would you be doing here if not following us?"

"I truly wasn't following you," I said with a firm voice of steel.

"Quit your petty lies already," James mocked me.

"Jimmy darling, I'm sure she can find her own way home," Mona suggested.

"It's a limousine Mona bunny. We will have the back to ourselves. She can wedge herself in the front with the driver and bodyguard."

All the way to the villa which I no longer considered home, cramped up in front of the spacious car, Mona would not stop moaning as she fucked my husband in the backseat. Only a black thin layer of curtain blocked them from view.

I was on probation, trapped under the watchful eyes of my cruel husband. The atmosphere at the villa was stiff and filled with tension. All the servants seemed ashamed to look me in the eyes. It wasn't hard for me to put to put two and two together. James had bragged to them that I had come crawling back to him. I think they were disappointed in me.I would let them believe his narrative until he trusted me enough to give me back my phone. I would have to call my secret contact to rescue me. My secret contact had told me it was not the right time to reveal himself to James. I respected his decision and I feared that he would break it for my sake. I did not want to imagine my secret contact carelessly revealing his identity by storming into the villa to find me. He was bound to suspect that James had something to do with my sudden disappearance. It had been three days since I had agreed to play along with James' lie. Life at the villa seemed to have returned to a stupid kind of normal

"Hello ma'am. My name is Antonio Giretti representing Songbird Press and we would very much like an exclusive interview."The message played over and over again on my private voicemail. I could not help but wonder how this reporter had gotten my new number especially since my secret contact had undertaken the press and public regarding the planning of my concert. All I had to do was show up on the stage on the D-day and play.I thought of calling my secret contact and running a background check on Songbird Press but I did not want to burden him anymore than I already had. I grabbed my new laptop and ran a quick google search. Songbird appeared to be a prominent journalism company, one of the best in fact in the country.I frowned with confusion. Even if they wanted an interview, there was nothing I could tell them that I hadn't already told Amy Gold. With this in mind, I called Antonio Giretti in order to politely turn him down."We would give you fifty thousand dollars for the interv

"Cancel the concert Ronica, and I'll let you come home." James said. His heart was pounding as no answer came through the line. Did she think he was bluffing? Had she cut the call on him? "Did you hear what I said?""Yes James, I heard you loud and clear," her surprising voice of steel cut through.James breathed with relief. He could salvage the situation as long as Ronica stayed on the line. He resolved to take the heady calm approach. "Ronica," he began, "What's all this? Why are you acting out all of a sudden? This isn't like you. Tell me where you are and I'll come pick you up. Then we can discuss this.""There's nothing to discuss.""What do you mean there's nothing to discuss? Are you out of your mind? Do you forget who I am to you? I am your husband.""I think it is you who have forgotten that I am your wife," Ronica snapped. "For eight years I succumbed to you. I left my family for you. Quit my career for you and you couldn't even respect that. I was a golden egg sitting in y

The following morning, my picture was plastered on the face of major newspapers across the country. This was unsurprising, considering I was a gifted musical prodigy who was known nationwide for my soulrending music. Everyone wanted a piece of my art and were devastated when I left it all for marriage. Now, eight years later, they would all hear me play again. I bet they were all excited.'Music Prodigy Ronica Risconce set for Career Comeback to Host a Concert on the Last day of the Month.' Then a picture of twenty four year old me curtsying on a stage while clasping a vintage Stradivarius violin. I walked leisurely around my hotel suite sipping a flute of white wine. Next to my headline was another headline that filled me with equal satisfaction.'Patrick Simmons Once Again Delays Announcing Successor to his Vast Family Fortune.'It was no doubt that everyone had expected Patrick to officially name James as his successor during his birthday party. My phone began to ring. Because it appeared to be the new normal, all members and staff of the Simmons' household followed James' lead and fawned over Mona. Nobody wanted to address the elephant in the room until it was a mere few hours to Patrick Simmons' birthday party. Ronica Simmons was still missing."It's only a few hours left until your father's birthday party and Ronica is nowhere to be found. She never even made it to the pharmacy last night," Mona told James while she feigned concern even as she was clad from head to toe in clothes and accessories that were all once Ronica's.James did not allow himself to be bothered. Ronica had no family or career so she relied wholly on him. "She will show up. She cannot afford displeasing my father and me. She's only pulling this stunt because she hopes I will call to beg her. She is that pathetic."James privately employed the servants to find her but they had no idea where she was. James seethed. Today was a very important day for him and if Ronica ruined it,

Mona's howls attracted the house serving staff to the scene. James totally panicked. He wasn't even looking at me as he pulled off his coat and tossed it to the side along with the other two coats before he dived into the lake to save his damsel in distress.I was frozen with amazement as James clambered out of the waters with Mona draped in his arms like a fragile princess."Call the family doctor now!" he ordered as he put the three coats (mine, his and Mona's) across her shoulders to keep her warm. She was crying pitifully."I was just asking her why she didn't bring a coat and she just pushed me," Mona moaned."Argh, James, she's lying?" I yelled, sick of her pretence. Of course James did not believe me. He stood up and strode towards me with a determined gaze. To the horror of all who were watching, he cruelly pushed me and I fell into the lake. I struggled to stay afloat."Don't you know Mona can't swim? How could you be so callous? Stay there and think about what you've done."
