The limousine approached the villa just as James and Mona were finishing their throes of pleasure. Mona yanked the privacy curtain open. From the dashboard mirror, I could see that she wasn't properly dressed.
Her lips were swollen, her hair tussled. She was adjusting her bra while her skirt was rolled high up her thighs. Her still damp lace panties were discarded on the seat. As if sensing my gaze, she naughtily flaunted it. "We better hide this Jimmy. Here, shove it in my bra." "It would be my pleasure." My attention returned to my phone. I had just received another credit alert and a record of my first class flight ticket from my secret contact. "What's so interesting in your phone?" James jeered. His voice carried a hint of jealousy but perhaps I was imagining it. He had Mona now after all. God forbid that he thought he could have us both. "Just surfing the news," I smoothly lied. The car arrived at the villa doors and I smartly stepped out. I was right after all. The locks had been changed. I had to wait for the doors to be opened. The butler opened the door from within and I marched in while James assisted Mona as if she was a china doll. He helped her into what used to be our room. All my things had been moved and haphazardly arranged in the dusty guest room. I was allergic to dust. I ran out with watery eyes before I could suffer a deadly reaction and nearly bumped into James who was talking to the cook about Mona's favourite dishes. Since I barely reached his shoulders in height, he peered down at me. "Aee you crying?" He rolled his eyes and muttered something about how exasperating I was. He turned to the cook. "Prepare a dish for Ronica too. No gluten, no milk, no nuts. She's allergic to those stuff. Do not mix hers up with Mona's or I'll have your head." The cook bowed hastily and scurried away. "I'm not neglecting you Ronica. You just make everything so difficult. So stop crying." As he stalked off, I watched his departing back with disgust and disbelief. I made everything difficult? Throughout our marriage he was the problem and now he was trying to make it seem like I was the demented one. I seriously needed some fresh air, a space unpolluted by him. I found that space by the lake. It was a manmade lake, stocked with fresh water and maintained weekly by the groundsman. The crystal water reflected the night sky. James would never find me here. I unlocked my phone with plans to call my contact. "Hey Ronica." I swerved around, surprised that anybody at all would conceive finding me here of all places. The surprise quickly faded. It was Mona. Her eyes bled with venomous disdain which was a far cry from how sweet she usually acted. I could tell that she had followed me. " I guess you needed a break from all of your pretence," I told her. She threw her head up in mocking laughter and boldly walked up to me. The full moon illuminated her expression of blazing fury. "It's not like I didn't warn you," Mona seethed. "You are just a freaking parasite trying to get in the way of me and James. Leeching off him and his family." "What about you? What do you think you are doing?" "I am giving James what he truly deserves. I am carrying his child. I have succeeded just like I promised you I would. So what if he stares at you when you're not looking or asks the kitchen to prepare a safe food for you? In the end, he's still giving you way below the bare minimum." She eyed me condescendingly. "Isn't it a bit unsafe to be outside where it's so cold? You have to think about your baby." I deflected. "Oh, that." Mona dialled a number on her phone that quickly went through. She put the phone on speaker for my benefit. "Jimmy boo, I'm outside by the lake, but I forgot to bring a coat." "Alright, stay right there. Give me just a minute." "Okay Jimmy boo." All the sweetness disappeared as she ended the call. "You do know if you call him he's not even going to pick. You should try it." "Point taken. I don't have time for…" Mona snatched my phone from me and dialled James number before I could stop her. Then she put the ringing phone back in my hand as if it was a timebomb. But then, her smug smirk died upon her face. I realized James had picked. "Ronica, why are you calling me when we are practically in the same house?" "I'm… I'm outside by the lake," I stammered, caught off guard. "Could… could you bring me a coat?" "My God, you truly are a piece of work. You knew you were going out and didn't even take a coat? Just stay where you are, I'm coming." Mona was furious. "But how…? Why would he…?" "I'm his wife after all," I interrupted, then took a brief glance at her bare fingers. "I can see he hasn't given you my wedding ring yet. Mona, the truth is I'm the one his family knows. I'm the one the law recognizes as his legal wife. Have a child for him or have ten. They'll all be illegitimate." Mona swung her hand to slap me but I caught her wrist. "Mona! Ronica!" James called. His footsteps moved towards us. Mona cackled. "Do you really think you'll win against me? James is mine. He'll always be mine." She yanked away from me and leaped into the lake the moment James stepped into view, with two coats draped on each arm. "She pushed me!" Mona wailed as she flailed about in the freezing waters even though she could swim. What could I say? Mona was sure full of devious surprises. It was reaching a week since James Simmons lost his wife. Again. She was supposed to be in a coma so he had let his guard down. But that was Ronica for you. Atcking from behind like a simple coward. And somehow, she knew Eric Strauss. How? James could think of only one reason and it terrified him. He still remembered the last call he made with Ronica. She had switched phones with a random nurse and James had not expected to be sidetracked that way. But he had maintained his composure as she rattled on the line about forwarding another number. He couldn't help but laugh even as the laughter made him bitter."Well played Ronica.""I learned from the best, James."James could feel his face going purple and all he really wanted to do was hurl his phone against the wall. Instead, he ran shaky finger through his hair. "How can you run off like that when you're going to have our baby?""Stop it with your clown games with me. Go okay them with Mona.""I got you back once. Do you really think
"You are THE Eric Strauss???""Oh my God, he's so young.""It took him fifteen years to build his anaconda empire, gobbling whatever company stood in his way.""Oh Ronica, such good fortune that you are a dear friend of Eric Strauss. Let's keep in touch."Many people were dying to be acquainted with Eric. Like Danny's friend had said, a man like Eric was good for business. I somehow became the intermediary introducing him. Surprisingly, he was relaxed and chill while he chatted politely with my classmates who only understood the language of money and who were ready to bite my head off thirty minutes ago when they thought I was a liar. The tide had turned because I knew Eric Strauss, everybody wanted to be my friend and keep in touch with me.The rave over meeting the elusive Eric Strauss in person was stronger than the repercussions for James and Mona who were completely forgotten until a later date. Pulling myself away from my surrounded date, I managed to reach the bar to get my muc
"A hundred and one million? Is he for real?"The hall bustled with hushed voices for a moment. The plot was undoubtedly getting thicker as everyone seemed to be waiting with bated breaths for James' reply. James remained uncharacteristically silent while Eric smirked."To summarize, a hundred million dollars is what the Saja sapphires are currently valued at. For the inconvenience of having to take them from whom I have gifted them to in order to sell it to you so you can gift them to your secretary, I am charging one million. A paltry sum. This way, your secretary may be a hundred million worth but Ronny will always be a million dollars worthier.""What are you rambling on about?" Mona shouted. "At the end of the day, they're just stones. No sane man would spend that much money on the Saja sapphires, talk less of fake ones.""Stay out of this," Eric snapped at Mona, his voice carrying a severe undertone of threat. She'd better listen to him. After all, her cup of atrocities was runni
"As a matter of fact, I do own the place," Eric said smugly."That can't be possible," snapped Clara haughtily as she lifted her nose pompously. "I know the man who owns this place. It was with his connection I used to rent this hall to host our reunion.""Well, if you call your connection now you will learn that the place including this very hall has changed hands around—" Eric lazily glanced at his watch. "Ah, thirty minutes ago.""I will take you up on that offer," Clara said bringing out her phone. "And when I am done, you'd better scurry out as fast as you can."Eric laughed and somehow, the whole place seemed to brighten from his sudden smile. His eyes twinkled as he adjusted his tie. "Sure thing Clara Nightwood. But if I'm right, you'll be the one scurrying instead. Do you take me up on my offer?"The haughty and vain Clara Knightwood had always been good at deciphering pricetags. Knowing her dignity was on the line, her eyes scrutinized Eric. From the expensive perm of his coi
With masterful and villainous pretence, Mona had succeeded in turning the tides. She had made me what she painted me out to be. A rude spoilt jealous housewife."We all know Mona is just a secretary but she wasn't as privileged as us so you need to stop making her feel bad about it," Denise, who was the mistress of looking down on less fortunate people, chastised."Did you do all these because you were jealous Mona is such a good friend to James? James is already your husband, what else do you want?""Buying fake Sapphires just to embarrass James. If you wanted them so bad, all you had to do was ask. Ugh.""If you are capable of doing this that means it's true then that you are stopping James from inheriting the family business from his father.""That means it's also true that you never wanted to come to the reunion. You only came because James asked Mona after you turned him down."The wrongful slander overwhelmed me so much that I felt the back of my eyes burn with unshed tears. Add
The hall was silent as the gravity of my accusation sank in."Ronica Risconce or Simmons or whatever you call yourself now, what are you doing here?" Sandra, who worked directly with the UN asked. "Mona said you didn't want to come and that's why James asked her to be his plus one. James said you insisted the reunions are too ignoble for you.""For the last two reunions, James was the one who led me to believe that these events were too ignoble for him. And despite the fact that Mona and I attended the same school, she is just my husband's secretary. I don't recall asking her to keep tabs over what I will or won't be attending," I coolly stated. While James was looking clueless what to do to deflect the bad light I had just cast on him, Mona desperately tried to salvage the situation. "Is this your ploy to make me look bad in front of all our classmates? You told me you won't be attending, only to show up, trying to play me for a fool for believing you.""You can tell them whatever yo
