Chapter 3

Author: Popper Fish
Silence stretched on the other end of the line.

I licked my dry lips and continued, "I won't do it again, I promise. You can smoke whenever you want. Don't worry about me."

As I spoke, my heart raced with fear. I was terrified of saying the wrong thing or reacting in a way that displeased them.

What if they decided I still hadn't learned my lesson? What if they thought I was still the same person I'd been before?

Then that black sedan would show up again, and I'd be dumped back in that alley that reeked of rotting garbage and mildew.

There was no way I was going back there.

"I really have learned my lesson," I added quickly. "Isaac, I promise I'll behave."

Isaac's breathing grew noticeably heavier on the other end of the line.

"Olivia…"

He said my name, but the words that were supposed to follow seemed to catch in his throat.

I waited a few seconds, yet he didn't say anything else.

"I'm sleepy," I whispered. "Can I go to bed now?"

"Go ahead," he finally said.

I hung up, drew the curtains, and climbed back into bed. The mattress was incredibly soft, and the blanket felt light against my skin.

I lay there with my eyes open, staring at the magnificent crystal chandelier hanging from the ceiling.

Everything here felt almost too good to be true.

…

When I woke up the next day, the sun was already shining brightly.

I could hear faint voices coming from downstairs. As I descended the stairs, I caught a glimpse of the living room through the gaps in the railing.

Wade was seated on the couch, facing a woman with curly hair and delicate features. She was wearing a long dress.

It was Renee.

My breath caught.

Isaac was there, too. He sat on a separate couch nearby, his expression somewhat distant.

Renee noticed me first. She set her cup down and smiled.

"Olivia? Wade told me you were back. Welcome home!" she said, walking over to me. "It's been so many years, Olivia. You've lost so much weight."

I met her gaze. Her beautiful eyes were filled with sympathy, as though she were looking at a stray kitten.

"I'm fine," I replied.

"Things will get better now," she said gently. "You're home again, and you'll have Wade and Isaac to look after you."

Isaac set down his coffee cup and looked at me, his expression complicated.

"Now that Olivia's back," he began quietly, silencing the entire room. "I think we should proceed with our wedding as soon as possible."

"Isn't that a little soon?" Wade asked with a frown.

"Yes, but Olivia has suffered so much over the past few years," Isaac said gently, his gaze settling on me. "I want to make it up to her as soon as I can."

Wade fell silent for a moment. He looked at me, then at Renee, before letting out a sigh.

"All right," he finally conceded. "I just hate to see Olivia leave me again."

"This is wonderful news!" Renee exclaimed, her smile unwavering. "Olivia and Isaac have been engaged for ages. They've put the wedding off for long enough, and it's about time they got married. Wade, you should be happy for your sister."

Wade merely hummed in acknowledgement.

I stood there like an outsider, listening as they discussed my wedding as though I weren't even part of the conversation.

"How about the 15th of next month?" Isaac suggested.

"Isn't that a little rushed?" Renee asked softly. "There's so much to prepare for a wedding."

"We have enough time," he replied firmly.

They continued discussing the arrangements, from the engagement gifts and guest list to the venue. I heard what they said, but none of it really registered.

"Olivia," Isaac suddenly called. "Do you have any preferences?"

I turned to look at him. "Not really. You can all decide."

Just then, Wade's gaze settled on the dress I was wearing. It was an old design from five years ago.

"Why don't I take you shopping later?" he offered warmly. "I haven't bought you any new clothes in years."

I tensed immediately.

"There's no need," I said, waving him off. "I have enough clothes."

Wade frowned. "Didn't you used to love shopping? You were always pestering me to take you, and we'd end up spending the whole day at the mall."

I hesitated for a moment.

"I was wrong back then," I said quietly. "I was immature and spent money carelessly."

The living room fell silent.

"Why don't we have the stores send everything over instead?" Isaac suggested.

I looked up, unsure what he meant.

"We can ask the sales associates at a few of your favorite boutiques to bring their latest collections over for you to choose from," Isaac explained casually.

"That works, too," Wade agreed, nodding. "Pick out a few outfits, and look at some jewelry while you're at it."

He reached out to ruffle my hair, just as he used to, but I recoiled before I even realized what I was doing.

There was a time when this had been everything I'd ever dreamed of. The man I loved had gone to great lengths to prepare a one-of-a-kind surprise for me. He was proposing, promising to spend the rest of his life with me.But now, standing here, I felt nothing but an unsettling emptiness. Isaac thought he was making amends, atoning for his mistakes, and giving me the very best he could offer. What he didn't understand was that the Olivia standing before him no longer needed any of it.He was simply too late—five years too late. He'd waited until I was no longer the person I'd once been, until my love for him had completely faded. I stared at him in silence. The excitement and anticipation in his eyes gradually faded as my silence dragged on, replaced by growing unease and fear."Olivia?" he called softly, his voice tight with tension. I lowered my eyes, unable to bear his almost burning gaze. Then I held out my deformed left hand. Shock flashed across Isaac's eyes, but

Gloria remained silent for a long time. "This case involves a lot of people and interests," she finally said. "I know," I replied. "That's why I need the Goodwin family's help.""Reopening the investigation and pursuing legal action will take time. We'll also need the right opportunity to move forward," she mused, weighing the pros and cons of the plan. "Once we set things in motion, there's no turning back. We could offend people in powerful positions and stir up trouble we'd rather avoid.""I'm not afraid of stirring up trouble," I stated. "I'm only afraid of spending the rest of my life branded a criminal."Mrs. Goodwin, this is the only condition I have before I leave. I need to walk away with my name cleared so I can start a new life. Isn't that only fair?"I spoke with such conviction that Gloria studied me for a long moment, weighing the risks against the potential benefits. Finally, she nodded. For five years, I'd lived under the weight of that accusation, struggli

In the end, I went back home with Wade. As much as I hated to admit it, I simply couldn't bring myself to give up a life of luxury. Isaac seemed to take my silence as consent and began making wedding arrangements with unwavering determination. He no longer asked for my opinion. Instead, he laid out invitation designs, venue photos, and menu options for me to look through, his eyes filled with cautious hope. Both he and Wade seemed desperate to fill some enormous void inside them, constantly finding new ways to make it up to me. Wade gave me a black card with no spending limit, calling it my allowance. Less than two days later, Isaac gave me another one, along with a note saying I could buy whatever I wanted.I accepted both cards with a grateful smile, pretending to be overwhelmed by their generosity. Then I began frequenting luxury boutiques. I picked out the latest handbags, the most expensive jewelry, and the rarest designer pieces, swiping my cards without the slightest

The moment I saw Wade and Isaac, I felt a pang of regret. Why had I let my temper get the better of me and risked throwing away the comfortable life I might have had? However, it was too late to take back my words. Seeing how hurt they looked stirred a twisted sense of satisfaction in me. I'd had enough of this. I was tired of pretending."You heard me," I said, my voice surprisingly calm. Wade took a few steps toward me, his jaw dropping in disbelief. "You're selling me for a mere five million dollars?""I'm selling both you and Isaac for five million," I corrected him. "2.5 million dollars each. It's a fair deal.""Olivia!" Isaac growled, pain and disbelief evident in his voice.Laura finally snapped out of her daze."See? Now you finally see what she's like!" she shrieked, pointing at me. "She's nothing but a gold digger. She'd sell anyone for money!"She was willing to act as a corporate spy back then. What makes you think she wouldn't sell the two of you for five mill

Wade's hand froze midair, and the warmth in his expression vanished. "Olivia, are you still angry with me?" he asked, his voice turning cold. My heart skipped a beat. Fear took over, and I immediately lowered my head. "I'm sorry," I sputtered. "It's all my fault."Wade's voice sharpened. "Why won't you look at me when I'm talking to you?""I…" I opened my mouth, struggling to find the right words. "I didn't mean to," I finally said. "I just…"To put it simply, I was used to it. In the slums, any sudden movement toward me could mean danger. The shoves from drunkards, the slaps from factory supervisors, and the unwelcome hands that crept toward me, testing how far they could go…"I'm sorry, Wade." I looked up at him and forced a smile, though I knew it must've looked awful. "I'm just not used to this yet. It won't happen again."Wade stared at me, his gaze unreadable. "Wade, you're scaring Olivia," Renee said gently, speaking up at just the right moment. "She's only just c
