Chapter 4

Author: Fortune Abundant
Patrick lost all interest in me the second he heard. He turned and went to greet her.

Connor looked right through my injuries. "Having you for a dad is the worst luck I've ever had. You've humiliated all of us."

"Just go, Dad." Brooke frowned as she pulled me to my feet, already pushing me toward the exit.

"Connor and I still want to make a good impression on Ms. Chambers. Stop making things worse."

I never imagined my own children could be this cruel to their father. The disappointment cut deeper than anything I could put into words.

They were shoving me toward the door when I ran straight into Eleanor, surrounded by a crowd of people. I saw her but didn't dare call out.

Christine and my kids always said I was an embarrassment. Looking the way I did right then, covered in food and blood, I was afraid Eleanor would think the same.

But she stopped right in front of me, and her face went white. "What happened to you?"

"I—"

I barely got a sound out before Christine snapped at me. "Shut your mouth. Nobody asked you."

Patrick was all smiles. "Just a broke relative causing trouble, ma'am. I'm sorry he bothered you. I regret inviting him in the first place."

"That's right," Connor jumped in. "He had no business being at my mom and Patrick's wedding. I'll get him out of here right now."

Brooke didn't dare speak up in front of a crowd like this, but she pulled harder on my arm, doing her part to show she was on their side.

Eleanor looked at all of them, and I could see the fury building in her face. "So, my husband isn't good enough to attend this wedding? Fine. Then neither am I."

Connor and Brooke went pale. They let go of me almost by reflex and stumbled back several steps.

Christine just stared at me, her mouth opening and closing without a sound.

"How is Dean Hayes married to you?" Patrick's hands were shaking. "I hadn't heard anything about you getting married, Ms. Chambers."

Eleanor's voice was ice. "I wasn't aware I needed to run my personal life by you."

Patrick's legs nearly gave out. "Ms. Chambers, please, that's not what I meant. This is all a misunderstanding, I—"

Eleanor cut him off. "You don't need to explain anything to me. My husband is standing here bleeding. No amount of talking is going to fix that."

She pulled out her phone and called the police right there.

Patrick was hauled off to the station still wearing his groom's boutonniere. Connor and Brooke went too, along with Christine, still in her wedding dress. The whole ceremony became a joke.

But the panic only lasted as long as the surprise. Once they calmed down and thought it through, they all reached the same conclusion.

With Connor and Brooke in the picture, I would never hold any of this against them. They knew better than anyone how much I cared about my children. So, every single person who had beaten me and schemed against me walked away without so much as an apology.

After the assessment, my injuries were classified as minor. Patrick got ten days in lockup and a 500-dollar fine. Connor got five days and a 200-dollar fine.

Christine and Brooke were furious about the outcome and tried several times to get me alone, but I refused. With Eleanor standing right next to me, they didn't have the nerve to say much.

After we left the station, Eleanor took me to the hospital.

"It's just a few scratches," I said. "No point wasting money on a doctor."

Eleanor gave me a look. "No amount of money is worth more than your health. Why don't you take yourself seriously?"

I clenched my fists and said nothing.

Ever since I lost my job, Brooke, her husband, Connor, his wife, and Christine had all treated me like a freeloader. If I asked for grocery money, even just a few dollars, they'd complain for hours and accuse me of pocketing the change.

Going to the doctor was even worse. I once ran a fever of 104 and needed an IV, and they still called me dramatic and wasteful.

After a while, I just stopped going, no matter how bad I felt. I was too afraid of the lectures.

Eleanor didn't get an answer, so she let it go. But she didn't let it slow her down either. She walked me through registration, the exam, and getting my wounds treated, then switched to working from home so she could stay with me.

Darren and Stella heard what happened and came to check on me. It had been a long time since anyone showed me that kind of care, since anyone treated me like I mattered. My chest ached with something I couldn't quite name, and the whole thing felt like a dream I didn't deserve.

But my wonderful children shattered that dream soon enough.

The day Connor got out, he and Brooke showed up at the door.

Once Connor and Brooke realized they'd been blocked everywhere, they stopped playing games and started borrowing other people's phones to call me.Brooke choked up more than once. "Dad, I'm sorry for everything we put you through. But none of it was what I really wanted. Patrick and Mom knew we needed money, and they used that to pressure me into going along with it.""You know the difference between needing money and being greedy."She and her husband barely earned anything, but they'd traded in a two-year-old car for a new one.She went around telling everyone she was sending Mia to an expensive private academy. That wasn't need. That was vanity."I'm sorry, Dad. I know I was wrong. But you can't put it all on me. You were already with Ms. Chambers. If you'd just covered Mia's tuition and helped us get a new car, I wouldn't have had to—""Brooke, if you keep coming around to pull this on me, I'm done being nice about it."I couldn't listen to her twisted logic anymore and cut

I slapped them both across the face, one each. Every ounce of anger I'd been holding in came out at once."I spent the best years of my life raising the two of you, and you drove me to the edge of a cliff. And now you want my help? On what planet do you deserve it? Even if you still want me as your father, I don't want you as my children anymore."I turned and walked away. They tried to come after me, but the bodyguards Eleanor had arranged for me stepped in and blocked them.I had never lost my temper like that before. It finally hit them that I meant it, that I was really done, and they panicked. They called out for me, their voices desperate.I paused for half a second, but I didn't look back. Whatever love I'd had for them, they'd stomped it out themselves. When Patrick and Christine heard what happened, they stopped being calm too. Christine called me."Dean, we were married for 30 years. For the sake of what we used to have, can't you just let this go?""You spent most of

Eleanor took me on a trip overseas. If I glanced at a piece of clothing a second too long, she bought it. If I said something nice about a dish on a restaurant poster, that's where we ate next.I even pointed at a white sports car in passing and said it looked nice. She called her assistant on the spot, then pulled up a walkthrough video from the dealership so I could pick the specs and color. When I saw the price tag was over 400,000 dollars, I nearly choked."Eleanor, that's way too much.""We can afford it.""I haven't been behind the wheel since I got my license. A car like that would be wasted on me.""That's fine. I'll hire someone to give you refresher lessons. If you like it, it's not a waste. And if you don't feel like driving, we can get a chauffeur."I wouldn't pick a color, so she picked white for me. Then she took me to a luxury watch store. The prices on those watches made my stomach flip just looking at them."Eleanor, I'm too old for something like this. It'd b

Connor and Brooke never hesitated to spend money on themselves. They always had the latest phones and wore designer clothes. But for their apology to me, the two of them went in together on a case of yogurt that was about to expire."Dad, this is kind of on you too. Your new wife is the chairwoman of the Chambers Group, and you didn't think to tell us? If you'd said something sooner, none of this would've happened." Brooke tried to link her arm through mine sweetly.I couldn't forget the vicious way she'd pressured me into divorcing and remarrying. I pulled away from her hand.Connor glanced at me. "We came all the way here to apologize. Don't push it."I couldn't hold it in anymore. My eyes burned as I shot back, "You two nearly drove me into the ground, and now you think a few nice words make it all go away? How do you have the nerve?"For years, Connor and Brooke had been the ones giving me attitude. They'd never once been on the receiving end. Connor had a short fuse, and he e

Eleanor knew what was holding me back and didn't push. She just said, "Why don't you meet my kids first? If it really doesn't work out, I won't force anything."Her son, Darren Clarke, was the president of the Chambers Group. Her daughter, Stella Clarke, was the chief of a major hospital. After I'd saved Eleanor all those years ago, both of them had gone out of their way to thank me. But that was then, and this was different. When I heard they were coming for dinner that afternoon, my nerves kicked in. But they turned out to be surprisingly easy to be around, and they'd even brought me gifts.Stella said, "Our dad passed away when we were young. Mom was afraid that bringing a stepfather into the picture would make things hard for me and Darren, so she decided not to look."By the time we were grown, she just never found the right person, and it kept getting pushed off. When she called today and said she'd finally met someone and wanted us to come see, we were really happy."Darren
