prepare breakfast

last update publish date: 2026-05-23 16:40:37

I woke up to prepare breakfast for Austin as normal.

After last night, I made up my mind to walk away but not without hitting him where it hurts the most.

I have to act like his dutiful wife, like his glorified nanny because that's what I am, a woman who only deserves to be a mistress.

Austin came back late smelling clean. Of course he would erase any evidence of him being with another woman.

As he held me to sleep, I didn't feel that familiar content I felt before.

All I could think about was that those hands had held a different woman not long ago.

I fought so hard not to cringe or throw up from disgust.

I cooked our usual breakfast and spread the table like everything was okay, like we were still the happily married couple from yesterday morning.

At around seven, Austin walked into the kitchen, freshly showered and his tie undone.

He walked to me, kissed my cheeks like a loving husband and wrapped his hands around me.

“ You woke up early today.” He commented, his deep breath fanning my neck.

I used to love it when he did that before. Now, I was fighting not to push him away.

I forced a smile on my face.

“ Someone has to wake up early and run this house.” I replied.

Truth was, I could not bear to speed another minute sleeping besides him.

“ I'm sorry for missing our anniversary. I'll make it up to you.” He said, stepping back and pulling something from his pockets.

He passed a small box to me.

“ I got you an anniversary gift.” Austin announced with a smile.

I received it and opened it, not having much hope about it.

It was always the same gift every anniversary; a necklace and a pair of matching earrings.

My heart squeezed when I saw what was inside– a pair of gold earrings.

I stared at them and recognised them immediately.

Yesterday, Sally had posted a picture on her social media.

It was a diamond necklace with her fingers curled around it proudly.

“A love token for three years of commitment.” That's what the caption read.

These earrings were the matching set.

He bought her a necklace and brought me the extras?

"They are beautiful but not really my type." I closed the box slowly and passed it back to him.

Austin blinked. "You don't like them?" He asked, like he wasn't expecting me to turn them down.

"I appreciate the thought but I'd rather have something I actually love." I said then turned back to the kitchen counter.

What did he take me for?

Was he handing me leftovers and expecting me to be grateful?

Austin was quiet for a moment then let out a small laugh that sounded all shades embarrassed.

"You're right. It was a mistake on my side. I'm sorry." He set the box down. "There's an auction this weekend. I will take you there and you can choose whatever you like.” He said.

That was it? Throw some cash and expect me to be placated? Was that the impression I gave him over the years?

I didn't let it bother me so I nodded and said nothing.

He loosened his tie and sat at the table, watching me plate his breakfast.

"I have a business dinner later tk sign a company.” Austin informed me.

I paused momentarily, wondering why he was telling me. He never disclosed such things with me after I stepped down to become his exclusive house wife.

Now, it seems like I even sacrificed that for nothing.

“ Which company?” I asked, not quite interested but needed to push the conversation.

“Pearl Jewels.” He replied.

I paused again. Wasn't that the company I started before joining college? It's one of the family subsidiary companies.

“ I have been working on the partnership for days. I finalised it last night.” Austin added.

So he was using that as a scapegoat for his infidelity?

" Do you want me to come with you?" I asked even when I knew the answer.

Austin smiled at me and I prepared myself for the obvious denial.

" I was about to ask you if you'd want to join me." Austin replied with a smile.

I was shocked.

After I stepped down from the company, he never allowed me to get involved in anything related to the company.

" We could use some time together since this project held me up and I missed our anniversary." He declared.

" Besides, for some reasons, they stated that you should be present for the signing." He added.

The realisation dawned at me. Austin wasn't after spending time with me as he had put it earlier. It's all because he needed me to secure the project.

I smiled pleasantly, hiding my fury.

“ Of course.”

After breakfast, I excused myself to my study while Austin got ready.

The gift box I had prepared for him sat on the table, glaring at me as if mocking me.

I grabbed it and threw it in the dustbin.

Then I opened my safe and retrieved some documents.

The files sat where I had left it three years ago. My name was printed clearly on them as a co-founder and shareholder of Cox Enterprises.

I held it and laughed softly to myself.

The irony was almost poetic. Austin once said I didn't need them, that what was his was mine too.

Without them now, my hard work over the years would have gone down the drain.

Twenty minutes later, we left the house and headed to the venue.

Pearl Jewels had sent three representatives and they were already seated when we arrived.

The man at the centre stood when he saw us walk in and I recognised him immediately.

Marcel was the person in charge of Pearl jewels, directly appointed by my grandfather.

His eyes landed on me and stopped.

"Mr. Cox, welcome." He extended a hand to Austin then turned to me.

"Miss Grayson…” He started but I cut him off before he could finish.

"I'm afraid you have the wrong person." I smiled pleasantly. "I'm Leslie Cox. Austin's wife."

He looked confused momentarily before catching the radar.

"Of course." Marcel recovered smoothly. "My apologies Mrs. Cox."

Austin chuckled beside me, sliding his hand to the small of my back.

"It's okay to mistake someone for another. My wife is an orphan though, she doesn't have a family.”

Marcel looked at me and I looked back at him, perfectly composed.

"Shall we sit?" I suggested.

Damon stared at me as if I had lost my gadamn mind. I might have but I wasn't going to show him that. After all, I had a reputation to protect." You what?" He asked, looking at me with wide eyes. He looked shocked as if he wasn't expecting that answer. Honestly,I wasn't expecting it either. The words slipped out of my mouth before I could even process them but I didn't regret it. I wanted him...I wanted to see what the mysterious bodyguard was hiding underneath all that seriousness. I wanted to see how he was in bed." You heard me," I replied, my tone unwavering. "I want you. Not tomorrow, not next week. Now. Right here." I declared. I know I was pushing my limits but so what? I liked the thrill of it.Damon looked at me and whatever expression on my face, and for a second, I saw a flicker of something in his eyes. It was something that looked an awful lot like desire but it was quickly replaced by a cold, hard mask." You're crazy," he said, shaking his head." I'm a woman who know

He said, pulling up his pants and buckling the belt.I just stood there in a daze, not knowing how to react. My mushroom soup was forgotten and the kitchen was silent with unspoken promises. I didn't know what to do with my hands. I didn't know how to process what had just happened. My body was humming, but my mind was a mess. And Mikhail knew it. He could read me so easily. Without saying a word, he moved behind me, wrapping his arms around my waist, and rested his chin on my shoulder. "Just breathe," he murmured.I did. I inhaled, smelling him…a mix of expensive cologne, and pure male. He grounded me when I was spinning out of control. The silence stretched, but it wasn't uncomfortable. It was…intimate.I had always been in control of my life and my body. I had always been the one to decide when and where and with whom. But with Mikhail, I felt like I was losing control, and the scary part was, I didn't even care." Mikhail…?" I asked, my voice hesitant." Hm?" He murmured, his lips

Leslie POV Mikhail's hands tightened on my hips as I pulled him closer, my legs still wrapped around his waist. The marble counter was cool against my skin and it was like a stark contrast to the heat radiating from him. I could feel every muscle in his body and the tension coiled in his shoulders as he held himself back…barely."Mikhail," I breathed against his mouth, and he groaned, pulling back just enough to look at me.His eyes were dark, nearly black, and I could see the war happening behind them. The predator wanting to take and the man wanting to give. As a mobster boss,I could swear he was never used to holding back but he was doing it…for me. I don't how that made me feel."Tell me to stop," he said, his voice rough. "Tell me right now and I will."I should have told him that…every rational part of me screamed that I should. Leslie POV " You are in a good mood." Mikhail's voice reached my ears as I swayed gently in the kitchen, stirring my mushroom soup.I turned around to face him, a smile plastered on my face." Of course I am in a good mood." I replied. How could I not? Austin had shot himself in the foot and to pearl Jewels, that meant more money. After Lydia entered the meeting, she trippled the market price of the stones. Austin left with no choice had to sign a new contract with her company. He was wise enough to know that paying a tripple price than the normal market price was better than loosing his company. Of course, his ego wouldn't allow him to see me acquire Cox enterprises. Not that he was safe from me. I knew Cox enterprises liquidity and cashflow and after that crazy expensive purchase from Haven suppliers, I was sure they were in a bad shape financially. This gave me an upper hand if I wanted to acquire them. Let's just say that that was my step two of my plan.Mikhail's steps were sile

Marcel's question threw me off the hook and I found myself narrowing my eyes at him. Why was he asking that when I had already briefed him about it last night at the call?But...I shrugged it off and explained the whole process. After all, I didn't want something going wrong during the meeting." Is everything ready?" I asked to double check. Marcel nodded." Good. I'll be there in five minutes." I informed him. After taking some deep breaths and asking Lydia to wish me good luck, I left my office and headed to the meeting room. When I pushed the door open, I was surprised to see Sally sitting besides Austin and not the secretary I knew. A frown formed on my face. Why was Austin bringing Sally into such an important meeting?" What? You are not happy to see me? You thought you could have Austin all yo yourself?" Sally sneered, a look of hatred plastered all over her face.Marcel was already settled opposite Austin so I ignored Sally's remarks and made my way to my position at the head

The old man stared at me then sighed." I know what you are thinking but you can be assured your uncle holds no much power in the board." He tried to assure me. I didn't believe it. Not one bit but I didn't call him out on that.Uncle Jared has always wanted control over the Grayson Holdings for as long as I can remember. My old man never made it easy for him but with grandfather growing old to supervise everything, I could already tell that there was trouble brewing somewhere." I'll be going back to Pearl jewels soon and handle everything. After that, I will take over the company." I informed him.The old man sighed." Leslie, you know our agreement. Only after you get married can you take over." He declared. I waited to argue but decided against it. That was the rule three years ago,it still is.After t
