Chapter 1

Author: Little Happiness
It was the one night in a month that Timothy Grant and I could be intimate.

I accidentally let out a soft gasp, and all desire faded from his cold eyes. He said, "Josie, you broke the rules."

He quickly pulled away, threw on a bathrobe, and headed to the bathroom. Left alone on the bed, I closed my eyes in shame and embarrassment.

Everything had changed three years ago, after our first child passed away. Back then, under the pretext of laying her soul to rest, Timothy had built a private chapel in our villa, where incense would burn year-round as he prayed to the heavens.

He said those who were religious had to avoid indulgence, and he limited our intimacy to once a month at most. That wasn't all, though. I wasn't allowed to make any indecent sounds during our time together, lest it offend the sacred.

Even though I was only 25 and had needs, I could only comply with his rules.

Timothy left the house in the middle of the night.

Not long after, I got a call from my best friend, Ruby Slater. She sounded frantic on the other end of the line. "Josie, check the trending searches! Why does the sugar daddy exposed with Yasmin Beech look so much like Timothy?"

My mind went blank the moment I checked the trending topics. It felt like something had exploded within me.

"Breaking News! Rising Star Yasmin Beech Suspected of Having a Sugar Daddy to Help Her Climb the Ranks! Identity of Backer Still Unconfirmed! Stay Tuned!"

The photo only showed a blurry figure from behind, but how could I not recognize my own husband? His right hand, which was always adorned with a rosary, was wrapped around Yasmin's slender waist as they entered a hotel together.

Just then, I received two anonymous emails. A flood of high-definition photos filled my phone screen. The first showed Timothy on one knee, holding a delicate young girl in a puffy dress in his arms. He allowed her to wrap her arms around his neck and kiss his cheek.

The second showed Yasmin reaching out to brush dust off Timothy's shoulder. Instead of coldly pushing her away like he did with me, he indulged her with a slight, permissive smile.

The dozens of photos finally made it clear that his growing devotion to his religion over the past three years wasn't the reason for his increasing distance from me.

It was because he was cheating.

My nails dug into my palms as I took deep breaths, forcing myself to stay calm as I opened the second email. It was a single line of text.

"Mrs. Grant, do you want to expose this, or will you buy the photos out for ten million dollars?"

"I'll buy them out."

I sent the reply, then used every penny in my bank account to buy the photos that could ruin Timothy and Yasmin. The ironic thing was that the money came from the wedding gifts Timothy had given me when we got married.

Now, it was being used to buy evidence of his betrayal.

I kept staring at the young girl in the photos. If our child hadn't died, she'd be about the same age as this girl. Unfortunately, I never even got to see her face before she was turned into a handful of ashes in a tiny urn.

Back then, while I drowned in my grief, all Timothy said was a flippant, "We'll always have more children."

Now, I knew that we never would.

After securing the photos, I called Ruby. "Do you know any lawyers? I want to get a divorce."

Since Timothy was tainted, I no longer wanted him.

Ruby got back to me after asking around. The lawyer drafted a divorce agreement, but since we didn't know the full extent of Timothy's assets, the property division couldn't be finalized.

I said, "Just send me the divorce agreement for now. I'll negotiate the property division with him later."

After all, those photos had only cost me ten million dollars. The reputation of Grant Corporation's CEO was worth far more than that. As long as I held evidence of Timothy's infidelity, I didn't need to worry about the property division not going my way.

I printed the divorce agreement and placed it on the coffee table. Then, I dialed Timothy's number. The call was soon picked up.

"Is something wrong, Ms. York? Tim is busy comforting our daughter."

The sweet, syrupy voice sounded polite, but it pierced my ears like an iron spike. It seemed that Yasmin was aware of my existence.

I had wondered if Timothy had deceived her by pretending to be single, but it turned out she was willingly playing the mistress!

I had no interest in wasting my time and breath on someone like her. So, I said icily, "Put Timothy on the line."

"I'm sorry, but our daughter is clinging to him, and he's tied up right now. You can tell me whatever it is you need to say, and I'll pass along the message." Her tone was still soft and gentle.

Right after she spoke, I heard a young girl's voice ring out. "Daddy, will I still see you tomorrow morning? You always disappear for no reason."

Timothy tenderly reassured her. "Of course. I promise I'll still be here in the morning."

My heart clenched. How long had it been since I'd heard him speak to me with such warmth?

"Ms. York, is there anything else? We need to go to bed soon." Yasmin's seemingly polite words were laced with venom.

I said, "Yes, there is. Tell him to come back and sign a divorce agreement!"

Terence scoffed. "I've always said that you were ungrateful, but you keep denying it. If it hadn't been for him and me that night, you'd have been eaten alive! Now, you won't even thank him in person!""I don't even have the chance to meet him! Besides, isn't it weird for me to go out of my way just to say thank you?" I asked, growing tired of the conversation. He winked at me. "Mrs. Shore Senior is hosting a charity gala for all the big names in Seavale tonight. He's her grandson, so he'll definitely be there. Think about how he saved your life and decide for yourself."I sighed. "The Shore family didn't send me an invitation. Security won't let me in without an invitation for an event like this."Just then, Terence whipped out an invitation. "Well, I have one, and so does my mom! She doesn't want to go tonight, so you can use hers."No matter what I said to convince him, he refused to help me deliver the coat to Mr. Shore. In the end, I had no choice but to go with him to the Sh

I rubbed my ears and said, "I shouldn't have waited outside for you. You're so noisy!"Instead of getting upset, Terence just laughed. "Stop pretending that you don't care. The way you acted today proves that you have feelings for me."I couldn't be bothered with his narcissistic ways. I asked for his address, hoping to quickly send him home to Gloria. To my surprise, he rattled off the address of my own apartment complex."Terence, there's no way that I'm letting you into my place!" I snapped, feeling annoyed. I was suddenly reminded of how he had pestered me nonstop during our school days. I could already feel a headache coming on.Terence rubbed his nose, asking seriously, "What do you mean? Did you buy the whole complex? If you can live there, why can't I?"I stared at him in disbelief. He explained, "The owner of the unit above yours is now me. From now on, we're upstairs and downstairs neighbors.""What?" My head spun.It wasn't until we got into the elevator that I real

Timothy didn't leave, either. He sat in his car and waited there.Night quietly settled in, and the air was damp and cold. At some point, Timothy got out of the car. He draped his coat, which smelled faintly of ambergris, over my shoulders.I instinctively tried to take it off and return it, but he held my hands down."Are you that worried about him?" His voice carried an edge of irritation.I retorted, "It's the same as how you always worry about Yasmin. Of course I am!"He didn't say anything else. Instead, he pulled out a pack of cigarettes and stepped a little further away from me. The lighter flared blue, briefly illuminating his sharp profile. The light and shadows flickered in the darkness. After about half an hour, Grant Corporation's legal team finally arrived. Timothy also made some calls to his contacts in the police force, and Terence was soon released on bail. When he stepped out of the police station, he had his hands stuffed in his pockets, and he looked unfazed.

I opened the car door to leave, but Timothy grabbed my wrist and yanked me back."Why won't you go to the hospital?" His gaze turned even more suspicious. "What if you've caught something? What then?"I laughed mockingly. "What does it matter to you if I catch something when our relationship is already in tatters? Do you think I'll infect you or something?""You're still being so stubborn!" Timothy's expression turned ugly. "I told you to stop making trouble and to just obediently be my wife. Now, look at you! Without me, and without the Grant family, you're just a lamb ready for slaughter!"All my grievances seemed to choke me at once. I met his frosty gaze and said, "But you were there last night. You were there, but was it any different from you being absent? I begged you to help me. Did you?"He paused, confused. "When did you ask me for help?"I felt even worse, and my voice broke. "Exactly. Yasmin was all you could see and think about. She had the slightest bit of pain in h

I let out a cold laugh. "You didn't expect this, huh? You knew that this would ruin me the moment you accepted Yasmin's offer! I was wrong about you, Christine!"Just like that, I was taken away by the police. The fluorescent lights in the interrogation room were harsh and hot, and they shone right in my face. Even though I hadn't done anything wrong, it was still my first time being interrogated as a suspect. I would be lying if I said that I wasn't scared. The police asked me many questions, and I answered all of them honestly. However, they told me that my answers didn't match the accusations made by David, the alleged victim. Thus, they needed to investigate further.I started to get anxious and asked, "How long do I need to be here, then?"The police officer said briskly, "We've notified your husband. If he comes to bail you out, you should be able to leave today.""Timothy?" That name felt dead to me now. After all, he was never there when I needed him. They might as well h

I sincerely thanked Mr. Shore. "Thank you so much for your help this time, Mr. Shore. And also for what you did at the construction site last time. I'm really grateful to you and your assistant."He simply replied, "You're welcome."Then, he turned to Terence and asked, "Are we heading to your place?""Yeah.""No!"Terence and I spoke at the same time.He gritted his teeth and asked, "Do you expect me to drive you all the way home in the middle of the night, Josie? If your husband sees you like this, he might think that we slept together!""Can you stop your nonsense?" I snapped. "I'm renting a place now. I'm not living with him anymore."Mr. Shore's sharp, perceptive gaze seemed to grow curious as he listened to my exchange with Terence. He probably hadn't expected Terence to be bold enough to hit on a married woman.I definitely didn't want to walk into the lion's den by going home with Terence. Fortunately, Mr. Shore was respectful enough to ask for my address. Then, he tol
