FAZER LOGINThe rain hit hard against the windows as the car pulled up to the gate of the private riverside residence. Maya turned off the engine, turned around in her seat, and looked at Evelyn in the back.
"Can you stand?" Maya asked, her hands still shaking on the steering wheel. "You look so pale, Evie. We need to get you inside right now."
Evelyn pressed her hand against her lower belly and took a slow, deep breath through her nose. The sharp pain was starting to ease, leaving behind a dull ache that still made her uncomfortable.
"I can walk," Evelyn said quietly, unclasping her seatbelt. "Just hold the door for me."
They walked up the covered stone path to the side door. Maya punched in the keycode, pushed the heavy door open, and guided Evelyn straight to the leather sofa in the living room. She grabbed a soft wool blanket, wrapped it around Evelyn's shoulders, and set a hot cup of ginger tea on the table.
"I am calling Tristan's legal team right now," Maya said, pulling her phone from her pocket, her thumb hovering over the dial pad. "I don't care what you signed. He just expects you to leave after three years with him! He’s planning to put a dying ex in your bed on your anniversary! They need to know that this isn't going to be a clean little write-off for his family."
"Put the phone down, Maya," Evelyn said, her voice low and steady as she took a slow sip of the tea.
"No, Evelyn, I am sick of watching you play nice!" Maya snapped, pacing back and forth across the hardwood floor. "You let him walk around New York like he is a business genius, when half of his supply chains exist because you placed quiet calls from this very house! Now he hands you divorce papers and runs off to Chloe? He needs to be dragged through court!"
"If I fight him in court, I am giving him my time," Evelyn said, setting the cup down with a soft click. "I am giving him my energy. He is not worth another minute of me."
Maya stopped pacing, her jaw dropping open. "So you're just letting him keep everything?"
"He has nothing that belongs to me," Evelyn said, leaning back into the cushions. "Call my legal team, but tell them to freeze all external access to my premarital holdings. Make sure the Sinclair Conglomerate has zero access to my private accounts. If Tristan's CFO comes looking for the personal guarantees I used to sign under my maiden name, tell them the file is closed."
Maya leaned over the back of the sofa, looking down at her. "What about the baby? Are you really keeping him out of the loop completely?"
"Tristan chose that I sign those papers tonight," Evelyn said, her eyes turning cold as glass. "He traded his wife for an ex-lover. I will not bring my child into a house where he has to compete with a good for nothing woman. Find me a private doctor, Maya. Someone outside the city network who knows how to keep their mouth shut."
Maya looked at Evelyn for a long moment, then let out a heavy sigh, nodding her head. "Alright. I'll call Dr. Harrison. She handles private cases for high profile clients. Nobody will know you're even on her list."
"Good," Evelyn said, sliding her feet off the sofa and standing up. "I'm going to my study."
"Evie, you almost passed out in the car!" Maya called out, stepping toward her. "You need to rest!"
"I spent a lot of time resting," Evelyn said, turning her head slightly. "It is time to go back to work."
She walked down the quiet corridor, opened the heavy door to the study, and locked it from the inside. The room was dark, smelling faintly of old books and leather. Evelyn walked straight to the desk, pulled out a small silver key from her purse, and unlocked the bottom drawer.
Inside sat a sleek, dark grey laptop without any logos or brand names.
She opened the screen. The monitor lit up, requiring a double biometric thumb scan and a private passcode. Within seconds, the dark background vanished, replaced by an intricate dashboard of financial streams, live stock tickers, and private global portfolios.
At the very top of the screen, bold gold letters read: ‘AEGIS CAPITAL — EXECUTIVE DASHBOARD’.
A private encrypted chat box popped up in the bottom right corner of the monitor.
Executive Board: "Director Aegis. Emergency meeting requested for tomorrow morning, 08:00 EST. Sinclair Conglomerate's private financial guarantees have expired. Market rumors suggest a massive liquidity gap in their tech-logistics division. We need your direction on whether to step in."
Evelyn stared at the blinking cursor on the screen. A small, cold smile touched her lips. She leaned over the keyboard, her fingers moving fast over the keys.
Director Aegis: "I will attend the meeting in person. Do not offer a single dollar of rescue capital until I sit at the table."
She hit send, closed the laptop, and locked it back in the drawer.

Meanwhile, across town, the sound of the private elevator opening echoed through the quiet entrance of the Sinclair penthouse.
Tristan walked into the living room and threw his coat onto the leather sofa. His tie was loose, and his hair was a little messy from the rain outside. He had spent three hours at the private clinic, making sure Chloe’s medical team had everything they needed before she was moved to the penthouse the next morning.
"Evelyn?" Tristan called out, his voice echoing against the tall marble walls.
No one answered. The kitchen was completely dark.
Tristan walked into the kitchen, his brows pulling together in annoyance. The chamomile tea mug was gone from the counter. The dinner plates had been cleaned and put away. The manila envelope sat right where he had left it, but the top pages were missing.
"Evelyn!" he called again, stepping into the master bedroom.
The room was silent. The large king size bed was neatly made, the pillows crisp and untouched. Tristan walked over to her side of the closet and pulled the mirrored sliding door open.
His hand froze in midair.
Her private journals were gone. But on the top shelf, lined up in neat, deliberate rows, were all the expensive designer dresses, the diamond necklaces, and the luxury handbags he had bought her over the last three years.
She had left every single piece of jewelry he had ever paid for, including the custom pearl earnings he gave her for their second anniversary.
Tristan stared at the empty hangers, a sudden knot forming in his stomach. He pulled out his phone and quickly pulled up her contact card.
"She is just playing games," he muttered to himself, pacing back toward the living room. "She wants me to chase her. She wants me to panic so I pull the divorce papers back."
He pressed the call button and held the phone to his ear, waiting for the familiar ring.
Instead of her calm, soft voice, a cold automated operator answered instantly.
“The number you have dialed is no longer in service. Please check the number and try your call again.”
Tristan pulled the phone away from his ear, staring at the screen in complete shock. "What?"
He dialed it again, his thumb pressing down so hard the screen almost cracked.
"The number you have dialed is no longer in service..."
"She disconnected her line?" Tristan yelled into the empty apartment, his chest rising and falling heavily. "Over a divorce? Where does she think she is going to go without my money?!"
He slammed his phone onto the counter, his breathing rough. He walked back to the master bedroom, pulling open the top nightstand drawer to check if she had left a letter or an address note.
There was nothing. Only a small, empty space where her black velvet box used to sit.
At that exact second, miles away at the Aegis Capital international headquarters, the main terminal in the boardroom flashed with a sudden secure transmission.
The lead board member looked up at the screen as the automated security code cleared, turning to the executive team gathered around the table.
"Cancel the morning delay," the executive said, his voice turning dead serious as he looked at the incoming message. "Director Aegis just logged in. She's taking full control.”
"Are you telling me the papers were signed without checking her offshore medical files first?"Alexander Sterling leaned back in his leather chair, his dark eyes fixed on his chief operating officer across the wooden desk. The private office on the top floor of Sovereign Holdings overlooked the glittering Manhattan skyline, but Alexander wasn't looking at the view."Not only did he sign them, sir, he didn't even read the custody clauses," his COO replied, adjusting his glasses. "Tristan Sinclair handed over his marriage for a woman who lied about her taxes five years ago. And right now, his entire logistics network is crashing because Evelyn pulled her private backing."Alexander let out a slow breath through his nose, his thumb tracing the smooth metal edge of his pen. A faint smirk touched the corner of his mouth."He never deserved her," Alexander said, his voice dropping into a low, rough register. "He spent three years treating her like a piece of furniture while she quietly held
"What do you mean every major bank in Manhattan just turned us down?"Tristan slammed his coffee cup onto the glass table, making the dark coffee splash over the edge.Henderson, his chief financial officer, wiped the sweat from his forehead with a handkerchief. He stood stiffly on the other side of the desk, holding a thick stack of rejection letters against his chest."They aren't just turning us down, Mr. Sinclair," Henderson said, his voice shaking. "They are quoting the exact same risk margin. Someone has flagged our corporate profile across the entire banking sector. Every private lender we approach is pulling their credit lines within ten minutes of reviewing our files."Tristan pressed his lips together in anger. He walked back and forth across the rug in his office, his heavy shoes making loud sounds against the wooden floor. "Find who did it. Dig into every competitor in the tri-state area. I want to know which firm is systematically buying up our debt.""We already checked
"If they sign that German shipping buyout at four billion, Sinclair Conglomerate won't be the only one drowning in debt by midnight."Henry Thorne slid a sheet of financial analysis across the dark glass table, his sharp eyes looking straight ahead.Around the executive boardroom of Aegis Capital, twelve senior directors sat quietly. None of them interrupted or moved their papers. They simply waited for the woman at the head of the table to make her decision.Evelyn didn't look at Henry. She leaned back in her high-backed leather chair, wearing a sharp charcoal pantsuit. Her fingers moved along the smooth edge of her tablet. Her skin was pale, showing how tired she was after the long morning. She picked up the report and looked through it until her eyes stopped at the highlighted clause on page eighty-two."They hid the local workers' compensation clause under the section about city tax rules," Evelyn said quietly, her voice clear enough for everyone in the silent room to hear. "If we
"Watch the IV line near the doorway, please! Do not let the oxygen tank scrape against the wall!"Chloe’s loud voice echoed through the penthouse as two private nurses carried a heavy metal box past the table near the entrance. Suitcases, bags of clothes, and medical machines were piled beside the shoe rack until the whole hallway looked like a hospital storage room.Tristan loosened his tie and stood by the kitchen counter, still holding his briefcase. He watched as one of the nurses pushed a tall oxygen machine down the corridor toward the master bedroom."Tristan, honey, come here," Chloe called, her voice rough as she leaned against the arm of the living room sofa. She was wearing cream silk pajamas, and her pale face was covered with thick powder to hide the grey color of her skin. "Tell this nurse that the pillows in this house are too soft. I need firm orthopedic pillows to support my neck, or I won't be able to sleep tonight.""I'll ask the housekeeper to order whatever you ne

“Happy third anniversary, Tristan.”Evelyn placed her warm tea on the kitchen counter and watched the penthouse door. The small black box sat beside the stove. She had been sick every morning for three weeks, taken two pregnancy tests, and visited a doctor in secret. She took a deep breath, adjusted her cream sweater, and waited for Tristan to come home. The door opened.Tristan walked in and dropped his briefcase on the bench. He didn't look at her or hang up his coat. He headed straight for the kitchen counter, his footsteps loud against the wooden floor.“You stayed up,” he said.“It is eight o’clock,” Evelyn replied, her voice soft. She tapped the edge of the velvet box with her index finger. “I made dinner. It is still in the oven if you want a plate.”Tristan reached into his suit jacket and pulled out a thick manila envelope. He laid it flat on the marble, right over the spot where her tea mug rested.“Don’t bother with dinner,” he said. He stood tall over the counter, his tie
