Natalie’s POV

“I’m sorry, what did you just say?”

I didn’t mean to blurt it out so loud, but I couldn’t help it. A relative? Me?

I stared at Brandon, still standing near the door like he hadn’t just dropped a bomb on me.

“A cousin of my ex-wife,” he said again. “He reached out. Said he’s willing to help her accept the house Grandpa York left behind.”

I felt like the air had been punched out of my lungs.

“Okay. Your ex-wife’s cousin,” I repeated, my voice thin.

Brandon looked at me, eyebrows slightly furrowed. “Yeah. Why?”

I gave a tight smile. “Nothing. Just didn’t know she had any cousins.”

I was trying to keep my voice even, but my chest felt heavy. Brandon didn’t know, of course... he couldn’t. That I grew up in an orphanage. That there were no relatives and no family.

At least, that’s what I’d always believed.

I left the hospital not long after that conversation, my head spinning. As soon as I got to my car, my phone rang.

“Dylan?” I answered.

“Hey,” he said, sounding unsure. “Som

Natalie’s POV“I’m Nathan,” the guy said casually, sliding onto the barstool next to me like we were old friends.I blinked at him. “Okay… and?”He smiled, like he expected me to know him. I didn’t.“You’re Natalie, right?”I stiffened. “Do I know you?”“No. But I know you’ve had a rough few weeks,” he said, sipping his drink like this was some casual chat over coffee. “The kidnapping, the drama, and now you find out that Vivian was behind it all. Must feel like the world’s closing in.”My stomach dropped. “What did you just say?”He looked at me, calm as ever. “Vivian planned the kidnapping because she has feelings for Brandon. You didn’t know?”I turned toward him, completely caught off guard. “Who the hell are you?”He shrugged. “Just someone who knows things.”Vague. Way too vague.“And you came here just to say that?” I asked, already sensing something was off.“I came to ask a question, actually,” he said, tilting his head slightly. “What are you to Brandon?”That made me pause.

Natalie’s POVI found a table not far from them, just close enough to hear but far enough not to get noticed. I pulled out my phone and pretended to scroll, even though my heart was racing.Margret was talking in a low voice, but I caught enough.“You went too far this time.”Carmilla’s lips parted slightly, eyes searching Margret’s face. “I… I know,” she said, barely above a whisper. “I didn’t mean for it to turn out like that.”“Even if Brandon hadn’t said anything,” Margret went on, her voice calm but firm, “I’d still vote to have you suspended. That kind of decision is really unacceptable.”Carmilla looked down at her lap, fidgeting with the strap of her purse. “It wasn’t just me,” she mumbled.Margret raised a brow. “What do you mean?”Carmilla leaned in slightly. “It was Vivian. I heard her. She was talking to those guys on the phone, setting up the whole thing.”There was a pause.“She planned to stage her own kidnapping,” Carmilla added. “Then have Brandon kidnapped too… I thi

Natalie’s POV“Drop the weapon!” one of the officers shouted.I turned just in time to see a man aiming something shiny toward Brandon.Another officer yelled again, “Put it down now or we’ll shoot!”A shot rang out before the warning even finished. My heart jumped to my throat.“Brandon, look out!” I screamed. But before he could even react, Vivian threw herself toward him.“Brandon!” she shrieked. He stumbled back with her weight, and they both hit the ground. Vivian let out a dramatic cry that echoed around the building. The shooter bolted, weaving past crates and trash bins. The officers took off after him, shouting, “Suspect is fleeing! Move, move!”“Stay with me!” Vivian wailed, gripping Brandon’s shirt like she’d just taken a bullet for a president. “I think… I think I’ve been shot!”I rushed forward, heart still pounding, not sure if I was more shocked by the gunfire or Vivian’s performance.Brandon sat up, arms wrapped around her, his eyes scanning her quickly. “Where? Natalie’s POV“Shut up!” the big guy said, cutting me off. We both flinched. He stepped closer, looked right at us, and said, “One of you can leave. You two decide who it’ll be.”I blinked. “What?”Brandon sat up straighter beside me. “What do you mean by ‘leave’?”“One goes, one stays. Up to you.”I turned to Brandon, trying to process what was happening. “Is this some kind of joke?”He didn’t answer right away, but I could already see it on his face... he was planning to send me.“Don’t even start,” I said quickly. He gave me a tired look. “You should go.”“No. What kind of plan is that? You want me to just walk out and leave you here?”“Natalie—”I cut him off. “They tied us up, threw us in here, and now suddenly want to let someone go? How does that make any sense?”Exactly! It didn’t. None of this felt normal.Back in the car, the men weren’t treating me like a hostage. It was more like… I don’t know. Like they were following some weird script. One guy wouldn’t even look at me,

Natalie’s POVI opened my eyes to a moving blur outside the window. The inside of the car was dim, and it took me a second to realize my hands were tied, same with my ankles. Not tight enough to hurt, but enough that I wasn’t going anywhere.Great.I shifted in my seat and looked up at the driver. “Hey. Where are we going?”No response.I frowned. “You do realize this is kidnapping, right?”Still nothing.I glanced at the passenger seat. A guy in a cap, arms crossed. “Are you planning to keep me alive or what?”He turned halfway and snapped, “Shut up.”I blinked. “Okay. Rude.”I leaned back, letting out a slow breath. There was a buzzing in my head... adrenaline, maybe. Or just the fact that I had no clue who was behind this.I’d pissed off a lot of people in court, sure, but it had been years since I touched a criminal case.Who even wastes their time kidnapping lawyers? Before I could ask anything else, the guy’s phone rang. He answered quickly, listened for a few seconds, then curs
