Chapter 8

If Renee was serious about divorcing Adam, then she had to cut all ties. There couldn't be any lingering attachments or second chances.

She wasn't sure if it was guilt or something else, but Adam came home that night.

Renee was curled up in the oversized chair on the balcony, lost in her book, when she heard the door to the bedroom open. A moment later, Adam's voice rang out.

"Renee?"

She didn't answer.

He spotted her outside and walked over quickly.

"Ta-da…! Look what I've got," he said, adding his own playful sound effects as he knelt beside her. He opened a small wooden box, his face lighting up with pride. "I made this for you."

Inside was a silver hairpin topped with a pink peony. Three delicate chains of varying lengths dangled from it, each catching the light softly.
