The moment Hannah Winters stepped into Silverthorne Manor, she knew something was wrong.
The grand hall was a wreck. Clothes lay scattered across the marble floor, as if someone had torn them off in a hurry. A strange, heavy hush hung in the air. Then she heard it: a woman's soft moans, and a man's low, ragged breathing, drifting down the corridor. Hannah's heart sank. Step by step, she followed the sound. Her fingers went cold. It was coming from the master bedroom, her bedroom, the one she shared with her husband, Lucas Hale. Her mind went white. Her whole body began to shake. But her hand moved before her thoughts could catch up. She grabbed the handle and shoved the door open. What she saw froze her where she stood. Two figures tangled together on her wedding bed, so lost in each other they had forgotten the world existed. "Luke... faster... please..." The woman's voice was sweet and shameless. The man's answering groan was thick with pleasure. Then the door banged against the wall, and the spell shattered. They sprang apart as if struck by lightning. The woman shrieked and snatched the blanket, dragging it over her head and body. The man stared at the doorway, pale and speechless. "Lucas Hale!" Hannah's voice cracked like a whip. "What do you think you're doing?" She could barely breathe. Her husband and her best friend, Victoria Ashford, in that bed. Her stomach twisted until she thought she would be sick. "Hannah..." Lucas scrambled to pull on his trousers, his face drained of color. "Why... why are you home so early?" Victoria clutched the blanket, shrinking back, one hand still searching the sheets for her clothes. Hannah's fury burst its banks. She swung her bag with all her strength and hurled it at him. "How could you do this to me? You bastard!" Her voice broke with rage and grief. Lucas ducked and flinched, not daring to strike back. "Hannah, stop! Let me explain! Vicky and I aren't what you think!" "You're half-naked in my bed with her! What else could it possibly be?" Something inside her snapped. She spun around, ripped the blanket from Victoria's body, seized her long hair, and slapped her again and again. "Victoria, how could you? I trusted you! I called you my best friend, and you crawled into my husband's bed behind my back! Have you no shame at all?" Her eyes burned with hatred and heartbreak. Victoria thrashed to get away, tears streaming down her face. "Ow! It hurts! Hannah, you've got it wrong! Not my face, please, not my face!" She cupped her cheek and turned to him, sobbing. "Luke, help me! Hannah's hitting me so hard... hic..." "Hannah, enough!" Lucas panicked. Seeing his wife wild with rage and Victoria begging for rescue, he seized Hannah and threw her to the floor. Then he stepped in front of Victoria, shielding her, his brows knitted and his eyes blazing. "Have you lost your mind? Why would you hit Vicky? I told you it's not what you think!" Hannah hit the floor hard. Pain shot through her hip, but she barely felt it. The fury in her chest was far stronger, and her whole body shook with it. She stared up at them and pointed, her voice rough and hoarse. "Lucas, you pushed me. Even now, you're protecting her? You two are shameless!" Her chest heaved. Everything she had swallowed, every ounce of hurt and resentment, was rising to the surface. She had never imagined the man she loved so deeply would betray her, and then stand so proudly beside another woman. Lucas spread his hands, looking almost wounded. "Hannah, you really have misunderstood. Vicky and I..." "Misunderstood?" Hannah cut in, her voice shaking with scorn. "You're my husband, Lucas! You slept with another woman behind my back, and now you tell me I'm the one who misunderstood? Have you no shame?!" Victoria, pulling her dress on, let out a soft, trembling sob. "Hannah... you can't have children. Luke has always wanted a child of his own. I couldn't bear to watch him suffer, so I stood by him." She dabbed at her eyes. "We've wanted to tell you for so long, but we were afraid it would break you. Everything we did was for your sake." Hannah almost laughed. Her rage was so great it twisted into disbelief. They had betrayed her in her own home, and they dared to call it a kindness? She had never heard anything so absurd. She glared at Victoria. "Victoria, you have no conscience at all. Listen to yourself! You did this for my sake? You're nothing but a thick-skinned, shameless snake!" Victoria's eyes reddened, and a flicker of resentment crossed her face. "Hannah, please don't speak so cruelly," Lucas said, as if he were the reasonable one. "Don't you understand our situation?" He lowered his voice. "The only reason I'm with Vicky is that I need an heir. If I find another woman anyway, why not Vicky? She's your friend. Once she gives birth, you can raise the child. That way you can face my parents and give them the answer they want. Isn't that fair?" He added quickly, "Vicky promised she won't break up our marriage. After the baby is born, nothing more will happen between us." Then his gaze softened, and he looked at Hannah with something that almost resembled tenderness. "Hannah, in the end, it's still you I love."Eleanor hesitated, but she agreed. "Well... in that case, I'll pack and go to Rosalind in a few days."Edmund cut in firmly. "There's no need to wait. We leave first thing tomorrow morning! The sooner we arrive, the sooner we can prepare. I can also use the trip to introduce Rosalind to the heir of the Smith family. She's so outstanding that if we form a bond with that house, it will greatly help the Harrington Group's expansion into foreign markets."Once she heard it touched the family's business, Eleanor stopped wavering. She gave Hannah an apologetic look and spoke softly."Hannah, Mom has to go away for a while. Focus on your studies while I'm gone. When I'm back, I'll spend much more time with you."Hannah smiled and nodded. "Okay, Mom. I'll study hard at home."Seeing how obedient and understanding her daughter was, Eleanor felt comforted. But Sebastian's face darkened. He frowned."Father, this heir of the Smith family. Do you mean Herbert Smith, the one tangled up in all thos
Night fell over the Harrington manor. In the great dining hall, a vast table was crowded with dishes that made the mouth water.Foie gras, caviar, black truffles, deep-sea tuna, king crab, Southern Isles lobster, prized highland beef...The finest delicacies from every corner of the world covered the table, their aromas curling through the air. The meal was worth more than an ordinary family earned in a year.Eleanor had spent the whole day leading Hannah around the island, and Hannah had been astonished a hundred times over. After seeing the Harringtons' extravagance, nothing surprised her anymore. No wonder people say the happiness of the rich is beyond imagination. If you're not happy, you simply aren't rich enough!Eleanor had also told her the truth about her sister, Rosalind.Rosalind was not Edmund and Eleanor's blood child. After Hannah was stolen, Eleanor wept day after day. She lost her appetite, her mind frayed, and eventually she fell into a very serious sickness of the sp
Inside the lift, Eleanor happily explained the layout."The second floor is your father's and my chamber. The third is Sebastian's. The fourth is Rosalind's. And the fifth is yours alone!"She squeezed Hannah's hand. "Everything is ready. If anything isn't to your liking, tell me, and I'll have a designer redo it."Hannah nodded. "I'll like whatever you and Dad arranged. There's nothing I'd change."The lift doors slid open, and a breath of luxury drifted out.Hannah stepped through into a magnificent entrance hall, as if she had walked into a palace. She stood frozen, stunned.Slowly she walked deeper in, and an enormous sitting hall opened before her. Its ceiling was painted with a glittering starry sky, casting a wondrous glow. The hall alone must have been over five thousand square feet. It held a lounge, a reception salon, a hall for entertainment, a small concert hall, a dining room, a tavern bar and a kitchen, every corner elegant and comfortable. The furniture was arranged wit
Edmund's face went dark and still, like a stagnant pool.Sebastian's words were not without sense. Hannah carried his blood, yet she had let herself be humiliated this far. She was hardly fit for any important task.If it had been Rosalind, she would have kept the Hales firmly in hand, and there would have been no divorce, no betrayal. In the end, it was because Hannah hadn't been raised at their side. She lacked experience and polish, and so she wasn't ready for the public eye.Eleanor frowned in thought, as if sharing the same worry.Seeing his father silent, Sebastian kept quiet too. He had already gotten what he wanted.Ha. She doesn't even know what she is. She has no ability and no education, and she still dreams of being loved by her parents. Dream on.Hannah's thoughts churned as she listened. She could see plainly that Sebastian harbored a deep hostility toward her. Her own brother did not want her in the family. His words were meant to drive a wedge between her and Edmund, t
Hannah looked around. The great hall was vast, bright and dazzling, every inch of it breathing grandeur. Her lips parted slightly, her face full of awe.Off to one side, Sebastian watched her with deep disdain.Ha. What an ignorant creature. If she weren't his parents' blood, he would never have wanted anything to do with someone of her station.Edmund and Eleanor had eyes only for their daughter, and didn't notice him.Hannah wandered across the hall, praising everything she saw."Mom, Dad, our home is so beautiful! It's so big, calling it a palace wouldn't be an exaggeration!"Eleanor smiled and stroked her hair. "Hannah, I've had the fifth floor decorated for you. Go up and see if you like it. If anything isn't to your taste, tell me, and your father and I will bring in a designer to redo it however you wish." Her voice overflowed with love.Hannah smiled. "Since you arranged it, I'll love it, whatever the style.""If you like it, that's all I need! If you like it, that's enough!"
Hannah stood stunned, unsure how to respond. Then the young man stepped forward and looked her over. A flash of disgust crossed his eyes and was gone in an instant."Father, Mother, is this my real sister?"Edmund and Eleanor nodded quickly."That's right, Sebastian. She is your sister."The young man showed no surprise. He gave a slight nod, his expression distant, his eyes cool and aloof. He extended his hand and spoke calmly."Hello. I'm Sebastian Harrington, your older brother. If calling me 'brother' feels too familiar, you may simply call me Sebastian."It was as stiff and formal as the opening of a business meeting. There was none of the warmth that should have existed between siblings.Hannah was puzzled by his manner. She hesitated, then politely shook his hand."Hello, Sebastian. I'm Hannah Winters..."Before she could finish, Edmund cut in. "Hannah, now that you're home with the Harringtons, it's time to introduce yourself differently."Her heart tightened, and she correcte
