VESPERAS POV

I was helping Petra repair one of the shelters when I heard the shout. A wolf had collapsed at the edge of the camp before sunset.

We both dropped what we were doing and ran. By the time we got there, Anya was already crouched beside him, checking for injuries.

He was young, maybe twenty, and looked like he'd been traveling for days. His lips were cracked and bleeding. His clothes were filthy. He could barely hold his head up.

"Water," Anya said.

Someone ran to get it. The young

VESPERAs POV Roan stood frozen outside his shelter, watching Anya read through his messages, his expression carefully blank. The camp suddenly erupted, their eyes wide anger and red with rage. Of course we had all trusted him. Not once had anybody imagined it would be him. The quiet and obedient wolf. "Traitor!""He got them killed!""Tear him apart!"Wolves started moving toward him, anger overriding sense, ready to rip him to pieces right there."STOP!" I pushed myself up, ignoring the protest from my belly and my tired legs. "Nobody touches him. Not yet."The wolves hesitated, looking between me and Roan, violence barely held in check.I walked toward him slowly. Each step hurt. My body was exhausted from watching people die, from the constant tension, from carrying a baby that was growing too fast and taking too much energy.I stopped in front of Roan and looked at him.He looked back, chin up, defiant despite being surrounded by wolves who wanted him dead. Then he spit at my

  • Divorced Luna: Carrying The Alpha's King Baby   THE DEFEAT

VESPERAs POV The second raid should have been easier than the first. We'd done it once already, knew what to expect, had better weapons and more confidence. Anya had planned it even more carefully this time, accounting for everything that went wrong the first time around. We moved into position in the pre-dawn darkness, silent and coordinated. The caravan was supposed to pass through at first light. We'd hit them the same way—fast and brutal, before they knew what was happening.I was on the ridge again with Petra and two others, watching. Waiting for Anya's signal. The caravan appeared right on schedule, six wagons just like before, guards riding alongside. Everything looked normal.Anya raised her hands again like she had discussed be the first day. Then she dropped it.The Broken Wolves poured down from the rocks. And Julian's forces were waiting for them. They came from everywhere—behind rocks, from wagon beds, from hiding spots we hadn't seen. Twice as many as there should have

VESPERAs POV The pass was exactly where Kael said it would be—narrow and steep, with rock walls on both sides that forced the road into a bottleneck barely wide enough for two wagons side by side.Perfect.I crouched behind a boulder on the western ridge, watching the caravan approach through the gap. Six wagons, eight guards visible, all of them wearing Julian's colors. They moved slowly, wheels creaking over uneven ground, completely unaware that thirty broken wolves were hidden in the rocks above them.My heart was hammering so hard I could feel it in my throat."Steady," Anya whispered beside me. She had her blade drawn, her single eye tracking the caravan's progress with the focus of someone who'd done this kind of thing before. "Don't move too fast. Wait for my signal."I nodded, not trusting my voice. The plan was simple. Anya's group would hit them from the front, drawing the guards' attention and forcing them to defend the lead wagons. Kael's group would come from behind and

VESPERAS POV I called everyone to the main fire just after the evening meal, when bellies were full enough that people could think but empty enough that they'd remember why we were having this conversation. They came slowly, in ones and twos, settling into a loose circle around the flames. Anya sat to my right, her blade resting across her knees like always. Kael was on my left, close enough that our shoulders almost touched but not quite. Petra, Gareth, the young wolf from the North whose name I'd learned was Finn. Even Pip, sitting at his usual six-foot distance from Anya.I waited until everyone was settled, then I spoke."We need supplies."Nobody argued. We all knew it was true. The dried meat was almost gone. Water had to be rationed. We had exactly three usable weapons between all of us and winter was coming to the Deadlands, which meant colder nights and less game and even fewer resources than we had now."What kind of supplies?" Gareth asked."Food. Weapons. Medicine. Blanke

VESPERAS POV "Walk with me."Kael's voice came from behind me just as I was finishing the evening meal. I'd been sitting with Petra and some of the other wolves, listening to them argue about the best way to skin a rabbit. It was not important. Just noise to fill the space.I looked up at him and something in his expression made my stomach tighten."Okay," I said.We walked toward the edge of camp without speaking, past the training grounds and the makeshift shelters, past the fires where wolves were settling in for the night. Nobody asked where we were going and that felt significant somehow, like everyone could tell this was something that needed privacy. The Deadlands stretched out before us, gray and cracked and endless under a sky that was just starting to show stars. We stopped at the boundary, that invisible line where camp ended and wasteland began, and stood there looking at nothing.Kael was quiet for so long I started to wonder if he'd forgotten why we came out here."Kael

Which he probably had been."Where did you come from?" Anya asked once he'd had enough to speak."North," he rasped. "Been walking for weeks.""Why?""My Alpha kicked me out. Said I was too weak and not worth feeding." He laughed bitterly. "Guess he was right.""You're here now," Anya said. "That makes you strong enough."We brought him food and he ate like he hadn't seen a meal in days. Probably hadn't. While he ate, wolves gathered around the fire, cu

VESPERAS POV I stood up slowly and walked to the window. The courtyard was empty. Clean, even—someone had washed the stones.
