Naomi's pov

That night, I didn't even bother pretending I was tired.

I sat cross-legged on my bed, phone warm in my hand, staring at the screen like it might decide things for me if I look long enough. The blue light of my phone was the only thing illuminating my room, casting shadows against the walls. It was 1:14 AM. The house was silent, but it was that heavy silence that followed a disaster.

I shifted under my duvet, the silk sheets feeling strangely abrasive against my skin. I couldn’t stop seeing them. Those men. The way they’d moved with that terrifying, practiced efficiency.

My phone vibrated in my hand, the screen lighting up with Jace’s name. I answered before the first buzz could even finish.

“Hey,” he whispered. His voice was a low, grounding anchor in the dark. “You’re still awake.”

“I don’t think I’m ever going to sleep again,” I admitted, pulling the covers up to my chin. “Every time I close my eyes, I hear the sound of the guns going off.”

I could hear the rustle of pa

Third person povThe silence in the kitchen after the briefing was heavy, the kind of quiet that follows a physical blow. Naomi remained seated on the high-backed stool, her hands folded in her laps. Her shoulders were squared and her spine a perfect vertical line, but Jace could see the tremor in her fingers. Jace watched her for a long minute. Then he got up. “Get your coat,” he said. His voice was low, breaking the stillness without shattering it.Naomi looked up, blinking. "What? Why?" “The house is a fortress,” Jace interrupted, reaching for his keys. “And right now, it feels like a cage.” He nodded once. Then, without ceremony, he said, “Let’s get you out of here.”She blinked. “Out of where?”“The mansion,” Jace replied. “All of it. Walls, cameras, people pretending not to watch you. We’re done for the night.”Naomi hesitated. “Where would we go?”“My place,” he said. “Neutral ground. She searched his face, measuring intent. She found none of the deflection she’d learned to

Third person povDespite how furious Jace was, he didn’t dare to slam the door on his way out of Calix’s study. When Calix had returned from the office, he had summoned Jace and Mateo for a brief update report. After their report, Calix had stormed out of the room.Jace shut the door carefully, his fingers lingering on the handle a little longer than necessary, jaw locked so tight it ached. Calix’s study fell quiet behind him because none of the men inside were brave enough to continue. He walked down the hall, boots silent on polished stone, anger simmering beneath his skin like a live wire. Harper’s ex had slipped through the trap that had been designed to catch far worse men. Not that Jace and his men were incompetent; they were the best at their job.He exhaled slowly through his nose, replaying the pattern in his head. Whoever this man had been before Harper escaped him, he wasn’t sloppy now.He wasn’t just trying to reach Harper, he was trying to dismantle her. And the only way

Third person povThe first sign something was wrong came quietly.A frozen account.Leo, Harper’s ex, stared at his phone in the dim light of a cheap apartment, refreshing the screen like the numbers might magically reappear if he looked hard enough. Balance unavailable. Transaction denied. Customer service unreachable.“What the hell…” he muttered. He tried again. Same result. The third attempt took longer to load, which gave him just enough hope only to be disappointed when the screen flashed red.He slammed the phone onto the table and stood, pacing. “No. No, no, no. This can’t be happening.”His second phone buzzed and he grabbed it instantly. “Yeah?”Static. Then nothing. He stared at the blank screen. He tried calling back and it went straight to voicemail. His jaw tightened. That contact never ignored him. Ever.He made another call. Then another. No answer. The room suddenly felt smaller and hotter.“This is a setup,” he said aloud, his voice sharp with certainty. “Someone’s s

Third person povBy the time Naomi returned from school after her last exam, the house should have been filled with the relieved exhales of a girl who had survived finals week. Instead, the air felt like it was holding its breath along with every occupant of the house.Naomi dropped her bag by the door and kicked off her shoes, her shoulders slumping. “I swear,” she said, wandering into the kitchen, “if I see another multiple-choice question, I’m suing the education system.”Harper glanced up from the counter, where she was slicing apples. “You can’t.”“I can try,” Naomi replied.Delilah smiled from the stove. “Congratulations in advance.”Naomi leaned over the counter, stealing a slice of apple. “Exam week is officially dead. Prom is next on the hit list.”Harper hesitated just a fraction before asking, “Are you… excited?”Naomi shrugged. “I mean. It’s prom. There’s glitter. There’s drama. There’s the social pressure to pretend it matters forever. So yeah. Excited.”Harper smiled fa

THIRD PERSON Delilah’s eyes hardened. “And instead?”“The attack,” Harper whispered. “That was punishment..”The room went deathly silent. Naomi looked horrified, but Delilah’s expression had shifted into something cold. This wasn’t the regular teenage drama, it was coercion.“Harper,” Delilah said, her voice slicing through the air. “I need facts. No more crying. Look at me.”Harper blinked, forcing herself to focus."How much money are we talking about?" Delilah asked.Harper shook her head. “I don’t know. He never told me a number.”Delilah didn’t flinch. “Do you know who he owes? Are they local? Cartel? Independent collectors?”“No. I don't know,” Harper cried. “He never gave me names. He was always so careful to keep them in the shadows. I don't know who they are or what they’re capable of.”“Did you ever give him names? Access? Information about your family?”Harper’s breath hitched. “No. I swear. I didn’t give him anything. I didn’t even know what he was really involved in.”D
