His cold and low voice rang out in the empty living room.
I froze in the doorway, and my bag dropped on the floor.
Inside the dimly lit room, the moonlight streamed through the curtains, reflecting on Theo’s intimidating presence.
He sat at the coffee table, his unwavering gaze on me devoid of any warmth.
I must have heard him wrong.
Maybe I've imagined those words in my excited state.
D- Divorce.
No way.
My heart beat uncomfortably, and my palms were suddenly sweaty as I bent to pick my bag from the floor.
Trying so hard to convince myself that he didn't say that, Theo confirmed it further by knocking the divorce papers on the table.
“You can ask for anything you want. I won't treat you unfairly.”
His cold words numbed me.
I glanced up, my initial shock now replaced by a feeling of realization.
My eyes fell on the divorce papers, my vision blurred suddenly with tears that clouded my eyes.
So this is it.
Struggling to control my emotions as they threatened to burst out, I clenched my jaws.
No wonder he waited until 2:30 in the morning.
No wonder the lights are still on.
No wonder he waited for my return after the surgery.
Finding the lights on as I entered the house just now, I was happy, thinking that he hadn't forgotten my birthday.
Used to the darkness whenever I returned from work at night, the lights gave me hope, believing that he cares.
My joy knew no bounds, thinking that he had returned to celebrate with me.
However, it turned out for this matter.
Beside the papers were several burnt cigarettes on the table.
He must have been waiting for a long time.
Breathing in deeply to reign in the turmoil of emotions inside me, I stepped forward, yet, my fingers still trembled as I picked up the divorce papers.
“Why?” Was the only word I could utter.
Why does he want a divorce all of a sudden?
For three years, we've been together. Our marriage lacks love, but I thought we were okay.
Although Theo never showed me any affection, my only hope is that the cold man will melt someday.
I only hope that someday he'll reciprocate my love.
Are my efforts futile then?
Have I been trying hard to prove my love for nothing?
“Olivia, this marriage was not consensual. There's no point in keeping it going.” His response struck me like lightning, reminding me of the reality.
Maybe I've been so lost in the hopes and fantasies that I've almost forgotten.
It's true that the marriage alliance between the Wellington and Barton families hasn't been something Theo had hoped for.
Our grandfathers were comrade-in-arms, and even before I was born, my fate had already been sealed that I would become his wife.
Growing up, I was constantly reminded as the adults had always joked about it.
I'd been confused at first until I came to understand the meanings behind their jokes.
Of course, I didn't just resign to my fate and marry Theo.
I fell for his charms when we were young. He was the only person who had ever protected me from the other kids’ bullying, and ever since that day, I saw no one else apart from him.
Still, my love turned out to be one-sided.
On our wedding night, the first words he said to me were, “We will never have any children.”
He is always careful and takes all safety measures for every intimacy.
“We'll get a divorce by agreement…” Theo's voice pulled back to the dreadful present. As if afraid that I won't agree due to my silence, he added, “Your income isn't high, so after the divorce, the house will be yours, and I'll also compensate you with 30 million.”
A house and a 30 million.
Are those enough to heal a broken heart?
I shut my eyes for a second then flipped through the papers to find the same terms written on them.
He should know that I never want any of this.
He knows how hard I've been working to win his affection.
Yet, he can't reciprocate with anything but this.
“After the divorce, I don't want any news about this to get out. We need to be even more distant than before,” Theo added.
Apart from his friends and families, nobody else knows that we're married.
To the outside world, Theo is still the enigmatic, handsome, and bachelor CEO whom every woman is after.
Maybe he has been planning to divorce from the beginning.
Otherwise, why would he want our marriage to be a secret?
His phone rang and he stood up, brushing past me while saying, “I have something else to do. You can ask for whatever you want, I won’t shortchange you. I’ll let a lawyer talk to you in later days.”
After he left, silence surrounded me.
Unable to hold back my tears any longer, I let them fall, dampening the divorce papers in my hands.
I stood rooted in the same spot, losing count of time as the memories of these three years together flashed in my vision.
Is this the end?
My eyes finally strayed from the divorce papers, falling on the A****n package in a corner.
It has just arrived today and I haven't had time to open it. Inside it are all kinds of decorations, and in the refrigerator is a cake I've made myself after squeezing time out of my busy schedule to learn intermittently for a month.
My only wish is to celebrate with him. Today is my birthday, no, it's past midnight. My birthday has already passed.
On the first day of my 27th year, my husband filed for a divorce.
How ironic. A dry laughter tore from my lips.
Wiping my tears, I sighed. “Happy birthday.”
Dr. Davison announced, “Well, I don’t think I should tell you much about Dr. Olivia’s contribution to this hospital. She’s among the rare talents who have sacrificed so much for this hospital. Everyone knows that every surgery she has ever performed is always successful… and recently, she stepped in to save this hospital’s reputation by performing a very rare and complex surgery. Who else deserves to be the new Head of the Cardiology Department if not her?”When it got to my turn, the round of applause didn’t come on time. However, there were gasps everywhere, and the silent hall broke into whispers and murmurs. Even the staff sitting in the same row didn’t hesitate to express their confusion out loud. “No way! He’s not referring to the same Dr. Olivia, is he?”“She’s the only Dr. Olivia in the Cardiology Department. Who else would he be referring to?”“But she’s the same Dr. Olivia who offended Theo Wellington, right?”“Did Dr. Davison mix up words and promote her instead of firing
For one thing, ever since I started working in this hospital, I’d never witnessed Theo appear in any meeting before. I brazen up and we found some seats in the front row.Everyone inside the hall was confused about the sudden meeting, and the whole place was filled with whispers of the hospital staff. “Attention, Everyone!” Dr. Davison took the mic and spoke into it. “Please settle down. We were all in the middle of work when this sudden meeting was decided. It will be brief and will only take five minutes, so we can all quickly return to our activities. This meeting should not be a hindrance to attending to any emergencies. Anyone who has a patient who’s in a critical condition is exempted.”Some of the nurses and doctors stood up and left after the clarification from Dr. Davison.Even though the meeting seemed to be very important, the patients’ lives were more valuable. It’s a good thing that he emphasized that importance. The hall was still filled to the brim, but the murmurs a
An announcement. What important announcement?Everyone was glancing at one another in confusion, wondering why this sudden news.Although it wasn’t a new thing for the hospital to call such important meetings, it was very rare. This kind of announcement had only been made twice before when I worked here some years ago. “Well, I won’t disturb you, Dr. Ethan. I’d better finish my food quickly and go prepare for the meeting. I know you’re planning the same.” The girl, who introduced herself as Cora, smiled at Ethan and picked up her food tray. From the moment she came and then left, she didn’t spare me a second’s glance. As if Ethan was the only person in this cafeteria, her gaze had been fixated on him.I smiled and picked up my juice box and sipped on it. “What’s so funny?” Ethan stared at me. “You look happy about the announcement.”I replied, “Not really. I’m only amazed that you’ve got an admirer soon. It hasn’t even been long since you returned.”“Who? She?” Ethan’s eyes darted i
Strangely, the question that Dr. Davison asked me wasn’t related to what I was afraid of.Although it was a weird question, I had thought that he’d summoned me because of the current gossip in the hospital.I came out of the office and walked into the same nurses gossiping outside. They gave me strange looks, and some of them even snickered and whispered hateful words. “I bet the hospital director has scolded her.”“Are you sure she’s not fired?”“Well, even if she’s fired, she brought it upon herself. Theo Wellington and Jessica are currently the most powerful couple in town. She was too brazen to offend them.”“I heard Dr. Olivia can perform complex surgeries because she possesses excellent skills. Was that the reason behind her arrogance?”“This should serve as a lesson to the other doctors who think so highly of themselves. Even Dr. Davison would think twice before going against Theo Wellington. Yet, she’s a nobody, and she dared to do that.”To all of them, Dr. Davison’s summons
“Does she know what she’s saying?”“Is she tired of her job?”“I wonder if she’s new. Doesn’t she know who Theo Wellington is?”“Daring to offend him is like a crime against the heavens. Your whole life will be miserable.”“She disrespected Theo Wellington and insulted Jessica. I wonder if she’s tired of living.”The crowd’s murmurs filled the whole place as they gathered around. This is the kind of attention I disliked. But it seemed Jessica was taking delight in it as she exaggerated the situation. “Look here, Dr. Olivia… You can insult me all you want but never speak mean words towards my husband. You can’t hold onto past grudges. Theo married me because he loves me. And as for you-”“That’s enough, Jessica.” Theo stopped her.He glared at me then took Jessica’s hand and walked away. “What are you doing, Honey? Are you just gonna spare her?” Jessica exclaimed. “Dr. Olivia is disrespectful and unprofessional.”“I have more important things to deal with. Take the media out of this
“If it was such a simple surgery, why didn’t you take your relative to a different hospital?” I snatched my hand. “Mr. Wellington, we’re not that close for you to call my name so casually.”Theo was obviously looking for trouble.Despite ignoring him, he went ahead to provoke me.Wouldn’t it be a joke that he wanted to thank me? Unless he had hidden intentions, Theo would rather kill himself than appreciate my efforts.Maybe he’d forgotten that he’d recently almost sent me to jail. “Ah! Dr. Olivia, I don’t think it has gotten to that…” Dr. Natasha looked scared and she got up from her chair. “Please relax, Mr. Wellington. Dr. Olivia is very professional in her field and rarely takes any credits.”“Well, that’s stupid!” Theo spat out. “Who’s she trying to impress?”“I am so sorry, Mr. Wellington. Dr. Olivia, can you please be nice to him?”Dr. Natasha didn’t know that Theo was intentionally trying to make me angry. But I couldn’t lose composure in his presence. Without another word,
