The Next Day.
The whole media is in an uproar and the entertainment news headlines are all about Theo Wellington’s sudden appearance at the hospital and his dramatic exit when he took the renowned model, Jessica, away.
#Jessica Reid's Mysterious Boyfriend Revealed#
"The mysterious wealthy man behind Jessica turned out to be Mr. Theo, the richest man in Los Angeles.”
"It is said that they were soulmates and first lovers abroad, but were forced to break up due to family reasons.”
“In the past few years, Jessica has worked hard to get promoted overseas in order to get the recognition of Theo's family and reunite with Theo as soon as possible."
“Wow, such a touching love story!!! So inspiring!”
“It's no wonder Mr. Wellington hasn't been sighted with other women before. He must love Jessica a lot!”
“The moment Jessica fell ill, he went to the hospital immediately. It shows how much he cares about her!”
“Isn't it strange, however? Why haven't they been sighted together before, even abroad?”
“Maybe Mr. Wellington was protecting her from the public. Imagine how stressful it'll be to be the girlfriend of someone as powerful as Theo Wellington.”
The opinions vary.
After that event, Jessica also gained popularity and her fan base soared.
Overnight, her popularity has skyrocketed, outnumbering that of the most popular celebrities.
I hardly have time to check my phone or surf the Internet, however, it's easy to grasp the situation.
My colleagues at the hospital did nothing but gossip about it all day, the lingering effects of the excitement caused by Theo’s sudden appearance yesterday, distracting them from work.
Even the patients aren't spared.
A lot of them who are die-hard fans of the model won't stop speaking about it.
After performing another surgery, I returned to my office and sat down.
Those words resounded in my mind but I shoved them aside. Added to the nauseous feeling, I wish I could get some rest but my phone rang.
Staring at the contact display name, I sucked in a deep breath.
My heart pounded as if something bad is about to happen because he rarely calls me.
He never does.
The whole world is celebrating his reunion with Jessica, when did he have the time to call me?
Is it to remind me of the divorce?
Is it to ask me to meet his lawyer?
As different thoughts entered my mind, I answered the phone hesitantly.
Without any pleasantries, Theo went to the point, “Grandpa found out about our divorce. He wants us to have dinner at the old mansion tonight.”
His grandfather found out?
How?
Who leaked the words out?
It's no wonder Theo sounded enraged. Apart from us and his lawyer, nobody else knows about the divorce.
He must be thinking I leaked the news to his grandfather.
Sighing, I stared at the phone's screen.
Theo didn't wait for my reply before he hung up the call.
His grandfather must want to know the reason why we want a divorce.
No matter what, I have to give him an explanation. After all, the old man has always treated me well although the mansion is the last place I'd like to be at.
I can't even remember the last time I visited there even though Theo's grandfather always insisted I visit.
Using my work as an excuse has always worked, but now, I can't run away from this.
Sooner or later, his grandfather will know.
Dinner starts at 8 o’clock.
After closing from work, I headed directly to the mansion.
The Wellington Mansion definitely lives up to its name.
Even at night, its magnificence shone brightly, the huge building in white glowing under the full moon.
My gaze strayed to the yard, bringing back a nostalgic feeling of our childhood days when I used to play in the mansion.
I can't help but envision my little self running around that yard. Theo would sit in his favorite spot under the huge apple tree, reading his books.
I always believed he was secretly watching over me. Until recently, I've always thought Theo is one of those men who mask their true feelings behind a blank mask.
“I have never felt comfortable since your brother married her. For three years, they haven't even had a child. She doesn't like to talk and deals with patients every day. I am afraid that she will bring the virus home.”
My mother-in-law’s voice caught my attention, snapping me out of my reverie.
I was about to enter the living room when their voices sounded from inside.
"At the beginning, the old man insisted on letting your brother marry her, but I disagree,” My mother-in-law continued. “She’s just a doctor. I don't know what's good about her. When your brother divorces her and marries Jessica, then I’ll feel at ease.”
"Yeah, yeah, a wife who smells like disinfectant all day? Even I, as a man, wouldn’t like it," added Tania, my sister-in-law. “Now, it’s good. If Jessica becomes my sister-in-law, I’m sure a lot of people will envy me!”
I stopped walking, letting their words sink in.
Is that what they think about me?
Theo's mother and sister never really liked me, but I don't expect them to be so happy about Jessica.
Ever since I married into this family, I've been dedicated to them both in those three years.
Tania once fell down while skiing. I took care of her in the hospital for several weeks, ignoring most of my responsibilities.
That aside, I had to beg the best orthopedic doctor in the hospital to travel back to the country and check on her. I massaged her legs constantly to relieve the bruising to the point that my hands became numb.
I never complained even when Tania ordered me around.
As for my mother-in-law, I've always been attentive and respectful, always trying my best to make her happy.
However, it turned out that no matter how hard I try, I can't change their attitude.
Pushing the door open, I walked in, pretending I didn't hear their words.
The two ladies glanced at me and none of them looked regretful.
“I was wondering why I smelled disinfectant from so far away, so it’s you.” Tania wrinkled her nose, while Maya gave me a disgusted look.
She was about to say something when the Butler walked in and announced, “Young Master Theo is here with Jessica!”
I instinctively glanced behind me.
The Butler wasn't wrong.
A Red Maserati parked in the courtyard. Theo stepped out. He walked to the passenger seat, opened the door, and princess-carried Jessica out.
I yelped, and the phone dropped from my hand.I had no time to process the shock. Scrambling down the bed, I shoved my feet into my slippers and darted outside. Mom was in the living room. If she looked through the window, even a furtive glance would do, she would definitely see Theo.My heart pounded as I raced past her, wondering if that man was crazy. How could he come back when I’d already warned him last night? I even begged him not to return. “What’s up with you? Where are you rushing to?” Mom called out, but I couldn’t pause or waste a second. I grabbed the door and stepped outside…No car. No Theo.Oh my goodness! Staggering in relief, I patted my chest, panting heavily to catch my breath. That’s a relief. So that heartless man even knows how to play pranks now.“What were you looking for, Dear? You scared me when you ran outside just now. Hope everything’s alright with you.” As I returned to the house, Mom came up to me and asked. What am I supposed to tell her? Urgh! What
As I spoke, my eyes kept darting to the house. Honestly, my Mom could come out at any moment.Theo’s hold on my waist loosened a bit, causing me to sigh inside in relief. Yet, my heart was troubled by the deep sadness reflecting in his eyes.“You’re torturing me, Olivia.”But I couldn’t take back my words, defying my own logic. Should I lie that I love him when I don’t?“Just give up…” I sighed. “I’m not the only woman on earth.”“But you’re the only woman I want.” He pursed his lips. “With or without our son, I’ll still chase after you. You’re the most amazing woman I’ve ever met.”I can’t let his sugar-coated words affect me. Won’t fall for the same cliche words that every man says to the woman they want.“My love for you is real, why can’t you let go of your fears?” He added. “I’m deeply regretful of my past actions, Olivia. Please give me a chance.”Why does he keep begging me? Hasn’t he realized by now that begging is futile?I looked down, my eyes falling on his chest. His shirt
My heart had jolted in happiness and anticipation when the phone rang. But now, it sank deeper than before. The fact that the line connected once means he’s aware. How many weeks has it been? When will he finally stop ignoring me?[Please answer my calls, Ethan. I’m sorry for what I did. I shouldn’t have hidden anything from you. Believe me, I’ll explain.]I sent him a text, adding to the pile of text messages I’d sent before. As usual, no response. The message showed ‘delivered’ meaning he didn’t block my line. He’s probably seeing my text messages. I added another. [Do you even love me?]I didn’t wait for his reply or anticipate it. I dropped the phone and turned off the lights. But sleep never came. For more than an hour, I remained in the same position, staring at the ceiling while Mom’s statements echoed in my ears. She’s only mad because she cares. She doesn’t hate me. She doesn’t hate Dave either. The kind of life Mom lived with Dad makes her think that everyone else will b
Hearing him say the word ‘abroad’ was enough to wake up my anxiety.Reassuring him wasn’t enough, I fiddled with my phone while stuttering, “I wasn’t scolding your Daddy. It was a joke. We were joking about something.”His tiny brows furrowed. He wasn’t convinced. The phone rang. Damn! Why isn’t he answering it?My fingers trembled as I placed the phone to my ear, wondering why the hell he was taking too long to answer. At the last ring, he answered the call. “Hey–”“My Love, what’s up?” I laughed. “Can you believe our baby thinks we’re arguing? I’ve told you to stop bringing up those kinds of jokes, and now you’ve made Dave misunderstand. Anyway, I’ve missed you again. I really do.”He must be drinking something, because next to my words was his rapid cough. It lasted for at least one minute. “Are you alright, My Love? I’m so sorry, were you eating? Did I interrupt anything important?”“Am I dreaming, Olivia?” Theo’s voice was filled with disbelief. “Is something wrong? Hope you’r
Urgh! Dammit! The words flew out of my mouth before I could hold them back. Realizing I’d just ranted about something insignificant, I slapped my forehead in embarrassment. Theo was silent for a few seconds, probably taken aback by my sudden outburst. “I- I meant…” No. I should hang up. No need to clarify what I’d just said, because honestly, I can’t find any lie to back it up with.Theo chuckled. Before I could get the chance to end the call, his voice interrupted. “Oh, I get it now. You’re jealous.”“Haha!” Rolling my eyes, I snickered. “You’re thinking too far–”“You miss me too,” He added, not letting me finish my words. “Alright. I’m sorry. It was my mistake for always asking about Dave. How have you been, My Love? Let’s chat for a while.”“Ridiculous!” I scoffed and ended the call. In his dreams. Why would I ever miss him?I sighed and rested on the bed, staring at the ceiling blankly. Honestly, I miss L.A., but not that heartless man. I miss work. I miss the buzz of the city
Thirty minutes later, our meeting with Mrs. Wilson was over. In Mr. Wilson’s absence, she handled the jobs, making it easy to recruit some workers through her. “Oh, goodness! This girl! Olivia, I have a feeling that you did that intentionally.” Mom wouldn’t stop grumbling on our way back to the flower shop. In fact, her mood had changed right from Mrs. Wilson’s place.Honestly, I can’t believe her. “You weren’t expecting me to pretend I don’t have a son, do you, Mom?”“So what? Are you not planning to settle down?” She asked. “You could do that later, but now you’ve ruined your chances of even meeting Mrs. Wilson’s son. Didn’t you see that woman’s expression? I’m pretty sure that she won’t recommend you to her son after what you’ve said.”I felt like laughing, but her words weren’t funny. I should have known that Mom had a different intention for asking me to accompany her to Mr. Wilson’s place.“Come on, Mom. I didn’t even say that I’m interested in Mrs. Wilson’s son. Can you stop
