Mia's POV

That weekend, I left my son, Nicholas White, in the care of Derek Smith, the owner of the diner I worked at, and arrived at the restaurant on time for the class reunion.

I sat in the far corner of the private dining room, watching everyone exchange pleasantries while they all ignored me. I kept my head down, gripping the faded hem of my shirt.

It was then that the door to the private dining room swung open again, prompting almost everyone to immediately go over to greet whoever had just arrived.

"You're finally here, Hugh! Do we have to start calling you Mr. Thorne now?"

"You're doing so well for yourself these days! You have a successful career and a happy family! We're all so jealous of you, Hugh!"

Hugh Thorne, my husband, was the one who walked into the private dining room—the man who had been dead for three years. He looked around the room and finally fixed his eyes on me, his breath catching for a moment.

I looked up and met his gaze.

Hugh frowned and asked coldly, "What are you doing here?"

"I'm the one who invited Mia over, Hugh!" The former classmate who had called me about the class reunion quickly came over and explained, "You two might have gotten a divorce, but we're still considered former classmates! We should get together more often!"

They had no idea that Hugh and I were still married.

I smiled politely and said, "Hey, Hugh…"

Hugh's expression hardened slightly.

"Congratulations on being alive…"

Everyone in the private dining room instantly froze. They glanced at me, then at Hugh. "W-What's going on here? What do you mean by that, Mia?"

It was clear that nobody except me realized Hugh had supposedly died. I was the only one stuck in this web of lies, struggling through three miserable years.

"It's nothing, really. Mia just harassed Hugh for so long that he had to fake his own death to get away from her."

I recognized the voice immediately.

Beatrice Lane, my so-called best friend, walked out from behind Hugh, looking every bit the wealthy, legitimate wife. "You already know the truth now, so there's no point in hiding it from you anymore, Mia."

I said nothing. I just looked at her and then at Hugh standing beside her. I suddenly realized how foolish I had been.

I met Hugh when I was 18 years old, at a time when I needed love the most. He was the person who brought light into my life. Through endless lonely nights, he told me that he would never leave me.

On our first anniversary, we made a death pact under a shooting star—whoever initiated the divorce first would end their own life.

I thought he was the one person I could hold on to, but it turned out that he had wanted to leave long ago.

It was then that someone stepped in to break the tension. "Oh, that's all behind us now! We've all got to move on! Come on, let's get the game started!"

Everyone took their seats and began bringing out various items from their bags in turn—some made everyone laugh, while others left people scratching their heads.

Beatrice flashed a bashful smile and took out a pregnancy report from her handbag. She was blushing deeply as she said, "It's Hugh's baby…"

In that instant, everyone in the private dining room froze, their eyes darting between Hugh and me.

It was my turn next. I kept a straight face and took out a wrinkled sheet of paper from my faded canvas bag.

Those around took a closer look and noticed the words "Divorce Agreement" written on it.

I took out a ballpoint pen and calmly signed it. "Let's get a divorce, Hugh. Might as well give you what you want."

I held the pen out in front of Hugh, but he made no move to take it.

Hugh frowned slightly, his expression conflicted as he looked at me. "Did you forget what we agreed on—the first one to bring up divorce has to die first?"

I looked at him and shook my head. "I haven't forgotten."

I then took out a medical report showing my liver cancer diagnosis.

Mia's POV Just then, Mr. Smith called me. "Did you see the news, Mia? Your ex-husband committed murder!"I quickly ended the call and checked the live news update on my phone. I finally realized what Hugh's "Goodbye" meant. He stabbed Beatrice in the stomach shortly after she was discharged from the hospital, causing blood to pool on the floor. He continued to stab Beatrice even after she passed out from the fright. He kept muttering, "Your child doesn't deserve to live… I'm so sorry, Mia… It's all my fault…"I remained in a daze for a long time even after the video ended. I finally snapped out of it when my phone rang again.I hesitated when Hugh called, but I eventually answered it. He sounded exhausted and full of despair as he said, "You don't have to repay the money, Mia. It's the least I owe you. Beatrice and I are the ones who should die. I just hope you'll be happy from now on, and… please forget about me, Mia."I stayed silent and soon heard the shrill police siren f

Third-Person POVHugh was stunned for a second when he heard Derek's words. He then smiled wryly and said, "You must be kidding me! Mia is just lying to me, right? Is she still so pissed off at me that she won't even forgive me?"Derek furrowed his brows and kicked him out of the diner. "How dare you say that! If that woman you were with hadn't insisted on taking Nicholas out that day, Nicholas wouldn't have gotten into a car accident! Mia lost her child and then died of a fatal illness ever since she met you! "Get out! You're a harbinger of misfortune!"Hugh stood in the darkness, and the clamor of the city suddenly felt worlds away. He didn't even take cover when it suddenly started pouring. Third-Person POVHugh froze for a moment, his heart skipping a beat. "W-What did you just say? Who's the biological father?"Hearing that, the doctor was puzzled, not understanding Hugh's reaction. He repeated himself, "You're the biological father. Nicholas' biological mother is Mia White, and his biological father is Hugh Thorne. That's what the records say, Mr. Thorne."Hugh's mind went completely blank, a cold dread washing over him from head to toe. He didn't notice Beatrice's face turning pale on the hospital bed. He walked out of the hospital room and happened to overhear the nurses gossiping. "Did you know that the leading doctor in our hospital just got suspended?""Really? What happened?""He was suspended because he accepted money from someone to falsify a paternity test! That's not all! That boy who died in the car accident yesterday could have survived, but the doctor accepted another bribe to withhold surgery! That's why they missed the window to save the boy!"Hu

Third-Person POVHugh still felt anxious after transferring 700,000 dollars to Mia. He recalled how desperate and broken she had sounded, seeming too genuine to be an act. He gripped his phone, hesitated briefly, and then called her back, only for it to ring for a long time without anyone answering. His heart began to race.Beatrice noticed his uneasiness and said reassuringly, "You have nothing to worry about, Hugh. You have already transferred 700,000 dollars to Mia. So even if the accident actually happened, that money can easily cover her son's treatment."Hugh finally felt at ease, though his mind kept drifting back to Mia and the best years of their relationship. He occasionally wondered if things would have ended so tragically between them if he hadn't made that pact under the shooting star, or if he'd never tried to give Beatrice a home.Beatrice suddenly burst out laughing beside him.Hugh looked at Beatrice and noticed she was replaying the footage of Mia groveling

Mia's POVHugh stared at Nicholas' face, which bore some resemblance to his own, and remained silent.Beatrice spoke up instead, saying, "You've got to be kidding me, Mia. How could that child belong to Hugh? I remember clearly that he was the kid you had with some other man!"Beatrice's so-called other man was just a handyman whose name I never even learned. Hugh was the first person I called when the handyman tried to assault me.I heard the sounds of Beatrice and Hugh being intimate when the call went through, which got the handyman even more worked up. I had already lost most of the will to fight. I used what little strength I had left to call for help. "Save me, Hugh!"Hugh's voice came through the phone, completely cold and detached, "What are you trying to pull this time, Mia?"In the end, a neighbor sensed something was off and called the police promptly, which prevented the handyman from getting what he wanted.I simply looked at them without saying anything, as it no

Mia's POVI stated flatly, "I still remember the death pact we made under the shooting star back then—and it seems like it does come true. You can rest assured that I'll die far away from here and stay out of your hair, Hugh—"Hugh abruptly rose to his feet before I could even finish my sentence, his eyes turning completely bloodshot. He swatted the pen out of my hand and barked, "What are you trying to pull this time to keep me from leaving, Mia? Did you really think I'd fall for it just because you forged a medical report?"He then tore up the medical report and the divorce agreement.I couldn't understand his reaction. He was the one who wanted a divorce and to leave me back then. I agreed to let him go—I could even vanish from his life entirely—yet he didn't seem to want that anymore.Hugh pulled me out of the private dining room at some point. He held my hand tightly as he explained, "That's enough, Mia. I know I'm in the wrong for faking my death. I'll come back to you as
