CHAPTER 8

DON'T LEAVE ME

Elena's POV

"Damien!"

His body fell against me and I almost lost my balance.

My hands caught him before he hit the floor and blood spread across his white shirt and then my heart stopped.

"No... no..."

I looked at his shoulder, the bullet had torn through it and blood kept flowing.

His face turned pale and his eyes remained open, but I could see the pain he was trying to hide.

"Boss!"

Several bodyguards ran toward us and one of them raised his gun and fired toward the h

CHAPTER 30THE UNCLEElena’s POVHe was not what I had imagined.I had pictured a monster. But the man who stepped into the nursery was handsome, tall, in his early fifties, in a perfectly tailored grey suit. His dark hair was streaked with silver at the temples, and his eyes were warm and brown, and heartbreakingly familiar. They were my father’s eyes.“Hello, Lena,” he said. The name hit me like a blow. I held Luca tighter. “Don’t call me that.”“Of course.” He smiled gently. “Isabella, then. I never could decide which I preferred.”On his right hand was a heavy gold ring with a black onyx stone.I stared at it. A garden. Roses. A man crouching in front of me, holding out a toy lion.“You gave me this,” I whispered.I did not need to ask. The memory had finally broken loose, whole and bright. A summer afternoon, the smell of cut grass, a man’s voice saying, This is our secret, piccola. I had loved him. I had run into his arms.“Zio Vic,” I said. His smile deepened, and tears welled

CHAPTER 29THE OLD ESTATEElena’s POVI told Damien at dawn.He listened to Sophia’s message twice. When it ended, he was silent for a long time.“Someone in this house,” he said.“Yes.”“Matteo. Marco. Dante. Dr. Bellini. Half my guards.” He rubbed his jaw. “We cannot cancel. If we do not appear tonight, that boy dies.”“Then we change the plan.”We did. Matteo’s tunnel would be a decoy, with two men to keep Victor’s eyes on it. The real rescue would come from the sea cliffs, where Marco’s men would wait. Only Damien, Matteo, and I would know the signal. If one of us was the traitor, only the traitor’s half of the plan would be useless. At eleven that night, we drove up the long avenue to the De Luca estate.I had not seen it since I was five years old. I knew it anyway. The gates had rusted, and half the east wing lay in blackened ruins. Ivy crawled over the walls like veins. A cold wind carried the smell of salt and old ash.“That window was mine,” I whispered. “Second floor.”Dami

CHAPTER 28THE NIGHT BEFOREElena’s POVWe planned until the sky turned grey.Matteo drew the tunnels under the estate on a sheet of white paper. One led from the sea cliffs to the old wine cellar. A second ran from the garden to the east wing. A third, he said, went straight to the nursery.“My mother’s room,” I said.“Your mother’s room,” he agreed. “And yours.”Damien stood at the window with his arms crossed. He had said very little since the safe.“Marco’s men will take the cliff route,” he said at last. “Matteo, you and four of mine go through the garden tunnel. Elena and I will walk in through the front door, as ordered.”“Alone?” Matteo asked.“With a wire. If something goes wrong, you come.”“And if the tunnels are watched?”“Then we will find out together.”Matteo said nothing, but I saw him look at me. I saw Damien see it too.By afternoon, everyone had gone to sleep or pretended to. Damien and I walked out onto the balcony, the same one where I had stood the night I learne

CHAPTER 27THE SAFEElena’s POVDamien took us to his father’s study after midnight. It was in the old Moretti mansion, a room I had walked past a hundred times without ever going in. The door had always been locked. Tonight, Damien opened it with a key he kept on a chain around his neck.Matteo came with us. He stood near the door, hands behind his back, studying the shelves and the heavy desk. Damien did not look at him once.“My father kept something here,” Damien said. “He told me once that if anything happened to him, I should open it only when I was ready.”“Are you ready?” I asked.“No.”He pushed aside a framed painting on the wall. Behind it, set into the stone, was an iron safe with a brass dial.He turned the dial slowly. His hand shook, and the door swung open.Inside lay three things.A small velvet pouch. A thick cream envelope with Damien’s name on it. And a photograph, face down.Damien took the pouch first. He opened it and tipped the contents into his palm.A silver

CHAPTER 26THE FAMILY DOCTORElena’s POVUncle Marco arrived within the hour.He walked into the study with his coat over his arm, silver hair damp from the rain, and the same warm smile he always wore. Dante followed him, hands in his pockets, looking like he had not slept.Damien did not offer them a seat.“Your car,” he said. “Where was it last night?”Marco frowned. “My car? In the garage, I assume. Why?”“It was seen leaving this property at midnight.”“That is impossible.” Marco turned to Dante, and something flickered across his face. “I reported it stolen two days ago. The police have the report.”“Papa did,” Dante said quickly. “I was there.”Damien stared at them for a long time. Then he turned to a guard and said quietly, “Check it.”Marco sighed. He glanced at me, and his gaze softened. “Elena, cara. You look exhausted.”“I’m well.”“You are not.” He reached out and patted my hand.I saw the ring on his finger. A heavy gold band with a black onyx stone, gleaming in the lam

CHAPTER 25THE REPORTElena’s POVThe medical report arrived at dawn.Damien had spent half the night on the phone. By morning, one of his men had delivered a thin envelope from a private clinic across the city. Damien read the first page, then the second. When he handed them to me, his face was pale with fury.“Read it.”The report carried Sophia’s name. It was a full examination, dated eight days ago.Pregnancy confirmed. Approximately twenty-one weeks.I counted backward. “Five months.”“Five months,” Damien said. “Sophia returned to this city less than a month ago. And I have not touched her in four years.”“So the child isn’t yours.”“It never was.”I should have felt triumphant. Instead I felt a strange, tired sadness. The entire mafia world had celebrated an heir who did not exist, and I had been the only one in that ballroom who had wept.“She told them it was yours,” I said. “Everyone believed her.”“Because I said nothing.” Damien’s voice was low. “I let them. It was the pri
