Dock My Pay? I’ll Pull the Plug

Over the holidays, my team and I worked eight straight days without a real break. By the end of it, we'd finally stabilized the company's new video app.

The reviews online were glowing. For the first time all week, the other four people on my team could breathe.

"The new VP called an all-hands for later," I said. "Probably wants to go over the launch numbers. Let's finish this batch and head up."

Everyone agreed.

Ben Dwyer, the youngest guy on my team, rolled his neck and grinned at me.

"Nolan, the app's been slammed all holiday and it's still running smooth as glass. That's your server platform. I swear it's more stable than what some of the giants are using."

"He's right," another engineer said. "Nolan's basically the backbone of this department. Garrett said it himself at the last executive meeting. We could lose anybody else, but not Nolan."

The others piled on until I waved them off, laughing.

Then I noticed Paige Kessler.

She was pale, and sweat had gathered along her hairline.

Paige had only recently had her appendix removed. She wasn't fully recovered, but she'd forced herself through all eight days of overtime because she didn't want to slow the team down. She hadn't complained once.

Now she looked ready to collapse.

I got her onto the office couch and told her to lie down.

"Go home when you can stand. Skip the meeting. I'll talk to the VP."

She nodded gratefully.

The rest of us went back to work.

A couple of the guys were already talking about the launch bonus and what they were going to spend it on.

I couldn't help smiling too.

The app had real potential. We'd given up the entire holiday, spent New Year's Eve in the office, and pushed the launch ahead of schedule. Between overtime and performance bonuses, this should have been a very good paycheck.

My phone buzzed in my pocket.

A message had landed in the company-wide channel.

"That's it," Ben said, grabbing his phone. "Bonus announcement."

Everyone reached for theirs.

I opened the notice.

Then I stopped breathing for a second.

"Engineering employees Nolan Whitaker, Paige Kessler, and three others repeatedly worked late into the night, resulting in unnecessary consumption of company resources. The department is hereby reprimanded. This month's salary and performance bonuses will be withheld, and the department lead must submit a formal written explanation. All employees are expected to learn from this incident."

The office went dead silent.
