All Chapters of Dock My Pay? I’ll Pull the Plug: Chapter 1 - Chapter 10

Over the holidays, my team and I worked eight straight days without a real break. By the end of it, we'd finally stabilized the company's new video app.The reviews online were glowing. For the first time all week, the other four people on my team could breathe."The new VP called an all-hands for later," I said. "Probably wants to go over the launch numbers. Let's finish this batch and head up."Everyone agreed.Ben Dwyer, the youngest guy on my team, rolled his neck and grinned at me."Nolan, the app's been slammed all holiday and it's still running smooth as glass. That's your server platform. I swear it's more stable than what some of the giants are using.""He's right," another engineer said. "Nolan's basically the backbone of this department. Garrett said it himself at the last executive meeting. We could lose anybody else, but not Nolan."The others piled on until I waved them off, laughing. Then I noticed Paige Kessler. She was pale, and sweat had gathered along her ha

A paper cup of cold instant coffee sat near the edge.Everything on that desk looked like evidence of the last eight sleepless days. And just like that, none of it belonged to my life anymore. My throat tightened.I clenched my fist, blinked hard, and forced the feeling down.On my monitor, live traffic data kept rolling. Error flags were already popping up.I watched without touching a thing. Not my problem anymore.I packed my personal belongings, inventoried every piece of company equipment, and left it neatly on the desk. Then I reached behind the workstation and disconnected the portable storage unit that had been linked to my private server platform for sixteen years.I slipped it into my pocket. The intern went pale."Mr. Whitaker, that..."I looked at him calmly."The drive and the server environment attached to it are mine. Personal property. They never belonged to the company."He stared at me, shocked, but after a moment he lowered his head and stepped aside.

I raised an eyebrow."Finding myself a new line of work."I turned the laptop slightly."I'm leasing server capacity."Garrett stared."My architecture is better than what most of these companies built for themselves. I provide the platform, they handle their own application maintenance, and I can lease capacity to more than one client at a time."I smiled."Why not become a digital landlord?"The responses were enthusiastic. Within minutes, companies were asking about availability and competing for deployment windows.Garrett's face darkened."Nolan! You know how valuable that technology is to VertexStream. You're really going to hand our competitors a weapon?"My expression didn't change."Garrett, the platform is my private property. I can use it however I want."I closed one email and opened another."I let VertexStream use it all these years because of our friendship. Do you honestly think there's any friendship left?"Garrett went pale. His mouth opened, then clos

"It's rough right now," Garrett had said, "but one day we'll have our own brand. People everywhere will know what we built."I looked at the thick, almost entirely handwritten plans in his hands. At his eyes, glowing with the kind of belief you couldn't fake. And somehow, I said yes.Someone chasing a dream has a pull that's hard to resist.Garrett had the vision.I had the technical ability to give it structure. So I became the foundation under his ideas.Once my server platform went live and proved how strong it was, other companies approached me about licensing it.I turned them all down.Infrastructure was a competitive advantage. Giving rivals access would make them stronger.I wanted to keep the technology inside VertexStream and help us grow. And we did grow. But the bigger the company became, the more Garrett started looking at me like a threat. In the early days, clients got him drunk at dinners and barked his first name across rooms.Years later, he was Garrett

They wouldn't look at me.Their testimony sounded memorized.I let out a quiet laugh.Daniel stood."We object, and we have a witness of our own."Paige took the stand. Her hands shook as she pointed toward the three former teammates."Nolan treated all of us well. How can you sit there and lie about him?"Then the recording played.Garrett's voice filled the courtroom.First came the offer: an extra six months of bonus pay in exchange for testimony. Then the threat: refuse, and Paige would never work in tech again. The final frame froze on Garrett's furious face.It looked nothing like the compassionate old friend he'd been pretending to be online. The judge stared. So did everyone watching the livestream. For two seconds, the live chat nearly stopped. Then it exploded.People in the courtroom started whispering until the judge called for order.Garrett realized the momentum was slipping away.He grabbed a flash drive."Fine. Then explain this."He held it up."
