Chapter 2

作者: Perfect Timing
In the meantime, comments keep appearing in the comment section.

[That woman is already laying the groundwork to sway public opinion in her favor!]

[She's going to portray you as a doctor who refused to help someone in need.]

[Don't bother with that yet. Hurry up and secure the evidence!]

I saved each screenshot one by one and asked the nurse on duty to back up everything, including the duty log entries, the landline call records to 911, and the recordings on the consultation phone.

I had just finished when the hospital director, Michael Yarrow, called. "What's going on, Bryson? I've heard that a complaint has already been escalated to the administrative general duty office on duty."

"I've handled everything according to procedure."

Michael kept his temper in check. "You're following procedure? You're only ten minutes from her house! Is it really that hard for you to go take a look, Bryson?"

I tightened my grip on the phone. "I'm not a paramedic, nor have I been authorized to use prehospital medical equipment. In addition, leaving my assigned post to make an unauthorized house call would be a procedural violation in itself, Dr. Yarrow."

Michael's voice turned cold. "You know we have to handle exceptional cases differently, don't you? There are hundreds of people in the residents' group chat calling the hospital heartless now! Please just go over there first, even if it's just to show your face."

I looked toward the ER lobby and said, "If the patient is suffering an acute myocardial infarction, the paramedics are already en route. If the patient is deceased, entering the premises without authorization could contaminate the scene, Dr. Yarrow."

Michael paused for a moment. "You're making this more complicated than it needs to be. Do you not know that the family involved is emotional right now? You're a doctor! You can't always fall back on the rules! You need to show some compassion sometimes!"

I suddenly chuckled. "I made a recording of this call as well."

"Bryson, don't try to scare me with a call recording." Michael's tone suddenly hardened as he continued, "You also should know that the hospital didn't train you just to go looking for fights with patients' families."

"I wasn't hired by the hospital to violate regulations, either."

Michael suddenly ended the call.

Jasmine asked softly, "You're really not heading over?"

"It's not that I won't go. It's that I can't go down there under these conditions."

I dialed the dispatcher again. "I'm an ER doctor at Mercy General Hospital. I received a distress call a short while ago.

"You see, the caller claimed the patient was having a heart attack but refused to contact 911 or follow my instructions for emergency care over the phone. She kept demanding that I come to her home privately.

"I've already arranged for an ambulance through 911, but given the unusual circumstances, I'd like police assistance to check on the patient's safety and record that I haven't gone to the scene or entered the home."

The dispatcher asked me for the address and the caller's phone number, which I gave both without hesitation. "Please don't go there yourself and make sure you can still be reached on the phone."

I hung up, and my heart rate finally started to slow down.

Yet, before I could even catch a breath, the administrative general duty office called. "There's a big commotion at Azure Residences, so the hospital leadership wants you to go with the medical affairs team and at least appease the family, Dr. Chapman."

I looked at the comments that were still in the comment section.

[Don't go alone!]

[Don't go until the police and ambulance arrive.]

I said, "I'm willing to cooperate with the police and clarify the situation, but I won't enter someone's home under the guise of a house call."

On the day my resignation was finalized, the ER remained as busy and noisy as ever. Children cried in the infusion area, while footsteps came and went outside the resuscitation room as people paced anxiously. There was a red message scrolled across the electronic screen. [Call 911 if you experience chest pain. Every second counts.]I stood in front of the information board, looking at it for what felt like a very long time. The phone sat on the counter at the nurses' station; its screen flickered on for a second, then faded back to black.Jasmine walked over with a chart tucked under her arm. "You're really leaving?""Yes…"She had tears in her eyes as she said, "We're about to lose someone in the ER who could actually handle the pressure."I smiled faintly and said, "The ER isn't short on people who can carry the weight. It's short on a system that doesn't let them take the fall for it."She looked down and was quiet for a while before saying, "It's a good thing you had me make

Henry's memorial service was brief and simple.I didn't attend it.Sophia sent me a photo of a bouquet of white flowers, with a silver-gray pillbox and a folded consultation card from the chest pain center with its frayed corners. Henry's handwriting was scrawled on the back. [Call 911 first for chest pain.]I stared at those words for a long time, my eyes suddenly filling with tears. Henry had remembered after all. He wasn't the one who had forgotten how to value life; it was the person who had used his medical history as a for her plan.It was a few days later when Mabel's uncle reached out to me. He didn't come pounding on my door. He sent me a very polite message instead. [Mabel did lose her head for a moment, but she's never been in a good mental state, and the trouble in her marriage has been going on for a long time. Could you write a brief statement saying Mabel was just acting out of panic and didn't mean to frame you, Dr. Chapman?]I replied, [Mabel had a draft on her

It was three days later, and the police released a short statement. Henry hadn't simply died of a heart attack. The medical examiner's preliminary findings indicated that he had experienced external force while alive, and the effects of medication had contributed to his death by suffocation. He had died at around 9:40 pm the previous evening.Mabel showed up at the doorway, soaking the doormat and wiping down the handle at 1:04 am. She called the chest pain center's consultation line at Mercy General Hospital at 1:16 am.I contacted 911 on her behalf at 1:19 am. I reported the matter to the police at 1:23 am. It was at 1:47 am that the paramedics and the police officers arrived at the scene.Mabel hadn't made a single emergency call between 9:00 pm and the police's arrival. What made it even worse was the search history pulled from her phone.[How do grieving families sue for wrongful death after a heart attack?][Who is responsible if a patient dies after a doctor makes a house

Sophia sat on a bench outside the police station, her hands shaking uncontrollably. She explained that she had rushed back from the next town over during the night. She had blamed me as well when she initially learned about Henry's death. She lowered her head and muttered, "I thought you just refused to go when I initially saw everything said in the group chat. I kept wondering if things might have turned out differently if you'd gotten there sooner."I remained silent.Sophia looked up, her eyes completely bloodshot. "The police walked me through the timeline afterward. Henry was already gone by the time you picked up that call."She covered her face, her voice breaking. "I'm sorry…"Sophia said those words so softly, but I heard them perfectly clearly.I had met Henry before, when he'd come to the clinic for some chest pain for a follow-up coronary artery check. I was on duty that day, and he had asked me many questions about his report. I even gave him a consultation card for

I didn't stay at my parents' place that night. I slept in an apartment close to the hospital instead.I had just finished my shower when the doorbell started ringing. It rang repeatedly, each time more urgently than the last. I peered through the peephole and noticed four people standing outside. There was a middle-aged man, an elderly woman with tears streaming down her face, a young woman, and Hazel Hunter from the medical affairs department. The middle-aged man banged hard on the door. "Show yourself, Bryson!"The elderly woman cried out, "How could you still hide from us now that Henry is dead? How can a doctor be so heartless?"I grabbed my phone and called the police, putting the call on speaker. "I'd like to report a disturbance. There are people outside my residence who keep banging on my door and shouting insults. I believe they're threatening my safety."There was a second of silence outside the door before the middle-aged man cursed angrily. "You fucking coward! Is ca

I recounted everything that had happened at the police station, starting with the first call at 1:16 am. I asked about the patient's consciousness, breathing, and chest pain, but the caller dodged the important questions. I told her to call 911, but she demanded that I make a house call on my own.I used the hospital's landline to call 911 on her behalf and reported the matter to the police. I never left the hospital during my shift. I remained at the hospital throughout my shift and only went to the residential complex entrance to submit the evidence after handing over my shift, as the police had requested.Jasmine arrived as well, bringing the duty log system, the ER lobby surveillance footage timestamps, and the landline call logs. She informed Officer Simmons, saying, "Dr. Chapman was standing beside the triage desk when he answered the call. He remained in the ER area the whole time and never left his post without permission."Officer Simmons asked me, "What made you suspect so
