Chapter 9

Author: Beeping Squid
Half an hour later, the auction was about to commence.

I sat next to Xavier, bored out of my mind. I had to drink grape juice because it was good for pregnancy.

Suddenly, events took a dramatic turn.

The soothing classical music stopped suddenly, and was followed by a shadowed announcement delivered in a monotonous tone.

“Everyone, please remain calm! There's a bomb threat!"

After the first scream tore through the silence, the group of celebrities that was so composed moments ago began to shove and jostle their way toward the exit.

“Damn it!” Xavier's expression turned grim. “What's going on?”

His men scrambled over to him. They were sweating profusely when they informed him in a panicked voice, “Don Whitmore! Miss Alice is missing! Someone saw her getting forcibly dragged away by several men in black suits during the chaos!”

“Xavier, there’s a bomb! We have to get out of here!” I grabbed his sleeve and feigned terror.

When he looked at me, a conflicted look flashed across his eyes.

“Grace, listen.” Though he spoke hurriedly, there was still something assuring about his tone of voice, “Get in the car. I’ll have the driver take you back to the hotel.”

“What about you?” I asked coyly despite already knowing the answer.

“I’m going to find Alice.” He let go of my hand without hesitation before turning to his men and barking an order, “Escort the Donna to the car! If anything happens to her, I’ll have you all skinned alive!”

When I stepped out the back door, a rush of cold wind whipped snowflakes at my face. Under the escort of a few soldati, I was taken into a black bulletproof sedan.

It was only after ensuring I got into the car and after it drove away that Xavier turned around and raced back into the venue. He charged in the opposite direction of the crowd, into the hall that could explode at any second.

He must have felt like he was the picturesque hero who was ready to risk it all to save his one true love.

After we were several kilometers away from the venue, the driver suddenly removed his sunglasses.

It was Noah.

“Grace, have you ever jumped out of a moving car before?”

He turned to me with a smile and snapped his fingers.

Three seconds later, we threw the car door open and flung ourselves out into the thick pile of snow lining the side of the road.

Meanwhile, the car continued to steer itself using the automated driving system. It accelerated into a river that was almost completely frozen.

After I got up, I spotted Rosalia, who was running toward me from a distance and crying.

“That was a wonderful jump. Looks like it’s not your first rodeo.”

Noah smiled and draped a thick cashmere coat over my shoulders.

“Donna! I missed you so much!" Rosalia threw herself at me and embraced me tightly, “You've lost more weight!”

“Grace.” Noah held up a black umbrella to shield us from the snow, “No, not Grace. Grace Whitmore is dead from now on. Have you thought about a new name?”

I trudged through the thick snow with them toward an SUV parked by the roadside without looking back.

“There’s plenty of time for me to think about that.”

Meanwhile, Xavier was frantically searching for Alice amidst the frantic crowd.

Finally, he spotted that familiar figure at the back of the hall.

“Xavier! I’m scared!” Alice threw herself into his arms while bawling her eyes out.

Xavier held her tightly. After ensuring that she was not hurt, he was just about to console her when a panic-stricken voice blasted through his earpiece.

“Don Whitmore, it’s disastrous! The Donna’s car just plunged into a river! We’re organizing a search and rescue team, but the water is too deep, the Donna might be…”

Xavier hardly had time to comfort the frightened Alice. Without a word, he turned and staggered toward the exit.

“To the river! Send all of the soldati to the river!” His usual calm demeanor escaped him while he roared into the walkie-talkie, “I’ll have all of you buried with her if you can’t save her!”

Gusts of cold wind continued to blow across the river in Zurosh, transporting flakes of snow.

When Xavier arrived, he was first greeted by the bottomless face of the river, then the faces of his dejected men.

Then, he spotted a pair of “corpses” the men were huddled around. The faces of the corpses had become mangled beyond recognition due to the violent impact.

“Find Grace right now!” He ordered sharply.

“Don Whitmore... that... that's the Donna.” One of the soldati spoke up timidly while gesturing at one of the corpses who looked skinnier than the other.

Xavier came to a halt. Then, he jabbed a furious kick at the soldato.

“Do you have a death wish? This couldn’t possibly be Grace!”

He strode over to the body and wanted to prove it was only a ridiculous joke.

When he crouched low and tremblingly brushed the haphazard hair covering the corpse’s face, his expression dropped.

A nearly broken necklace hung askew over the mangled neck of the corpse.

It was the necklace he had commissioned for Grace. He watched her put it on with his own eyes only hours ago.

“Quit messing around, Grace. I know you're trying to get back at me. Get up, come home with me.

“Please, come back. I'll give you anything you want, just come back…”

He dropped his knees on the snow and cradled the cold, stiff corpse in his arms. Then, he let out an anguished cry.

One year later.Somewhere amidst an island known for being a tourist destination, there was the sound of a baby crying.“Don't cry, don't cry, Daddy's here.”Noah gently settled the child in the cradle. His movements were delicate and practiced.I had an apron strapped around my waist and was stepping out of the kitchen with a tray of cut fruits when I witnessed the interaction. It was very heartwarming to see.“Is she trying to get your attention again?” I approached and leaned against his shoulder.“She just woke up. She must be hungry.” Noah turned around and kissed me on the forehead before asking, “Where are Rosalia and Annie?”“They took the tourists out for surfing lessons. They seem to be having a blast.” I smiled and shook my head.Noah and I had enough savings to live lavishly for several lifetimes. Regardless, we decided to run a resort on the island where I gave birth to our daughter, Sophia Gill.“The livestream is about to start.” Noah gently patted Sophia’s back

The wind in the cemetery was chilly and seemed to slice against Xavier’s cheeks.Though he stood gravely before Sam’s tombstone, he was smiling.Soon, he would return to Grace and take her on a honeymoon.By the time the car pulled into the manor, the sun was coming up.He stepped out of the car and swiftly entered the house, into the living room.“Where's the Donna?” he asked one of the housemaids assigned to nightwatch duty. The housemaid hesitated and tried to conceal her panic, “The Donna has been in your room the entire time and never came out…”Xavier had an ominous feeling.“No,” he grunted before rushing toward his room.He went straight to the dressing room and parted the coats out of the way before reaching for a mechanism. There was still a faint scent of Grace’s perfume mingling in the air of the secret passage. It must be Jakob. He was the only one who knew about the secret passage.Ten minutes later, two of his men brought Jakob into the living room.He was h

When the boat docked on the island, the shimmering sea was reflecting the radial glow of the sun above. As soon as I hopped off the boat, my feet sank into a soft cushion of sand, which blanketed my toes with warmth. The heat seemed to surge into the depths of my heart, and I felt like crying.I wasn’t dreaming.I made it out.“Grace!” I heard a familiar voice and looked up abruptly to see Noah calling out from under a coconut tree only a short distance away. He was wearing a white shirt and looked tall and as striking as ever.He took off and ran to me.“You’re back… Just like you said you would.” He pulled me into a tight embrace. “I’ve been waiting for you for so long.”The heat of his body coursing through me reminded me that this was real. I could smell the salty scent of the sea and the warmth of the sun from him. It was nothing like the nauseating smell of cigars on Xavier. At this point, I could not hold back anymore and started to cry.“Noah… I missed you so much.”T

I turned and entered his dressing room, where I carefully examined every inch of the wall.Jakob told me this was where I could find the secret passage leading to the back door. It was a feature they intentionally left behind when reconstructing the manor to serve as an emergency escape.I traced my finger against a bevelled panel and felt it loosen ever so slightly. When I applied pressure, the panel caved in as expected, revealing a narrow entrance. It was only wide enough for one person to pass through at a time.I mustered my courage and went inside. Soon, I arrived at a steel gate which I unlocked with the key. After I followed the passage to the back door, I heaved a sigh of relief. Then, I went back the same path I had come and draped several large coats over the entrance to keep it hidden. I made sure that there would be no signs to tip him off. Now, all I had to do was play the role of a wife who had “forgiven” him. When he woke up, all he remembered was me agreeing to

It was dark by the time I returned to the manor. I heard heavy footsteps approaching my door soon after I entered.“Grace, open the door.”Xavier reeked of alcohol, so much that I could smell it through a closed door.I hesitated for a moment before getting up to open the door.I found him perched right outside the doorway, his figure swaying slightly as if he was having trouble keeping his balance. Several buttons of his shirt were undone while his tie hung loosely around his neck. His deep gray eyes were bloodshot and fixed intently on me.“You…” His voice came out terribly hoarse when he spoke, “Why aren’t you hiding from me anymore?”I stepped aside to let him in while answering curtly, “As if there is any use in hiding.”He staggered into the room while casually tossing a bottle of liquor he was holding to the floor. Then, he suddenly grabbed my wrist and pleaded with a desperate look in his eyes, “Grace, I was wrong. I shouldn’t have forced myself on you, and I shouldn’t

After leaving Annie, I did not return to the manor right away, nor did I seek out Jakob.I was getting worried because my period was twenty days late.At first, I figured it was hormonal since my emotions were all over the place, and I had been losing sleep lately. Now, though, a brazen idea came to my mind.I had the driver take me to a nearby public hospital that was relatively out of the way. After doing a blood test and taking an ultrasound, I waited for a gruelling half an hour that felt like eons.“Congratulations, you're pregnant!” With a smile, the doctor presented me with a report.I felt my blood turn cold.My hand instinctively reached for my stomach. Though it was still flat, I knew that there was a child whose blood ran with mine and Noah’s.Though this was not an ideal time to become pregnant, it also felt like a ray of hope. All my hesitation and fear dissipated when it occurred to me that I was with child.I had to get out. I had to take my child and Annie and
