Chapter 8

Author: Beeping Squid
On the evening of the auction, Xavier came to pick me up in person.

When he opened the door, I was sitting at my vanity table, in the middle of applying a bright red lipstick.

After having been confined for so long, I had lost a lot of weight. I could hardly recognize the woman in the mirror.

“Looks like you’ve made up your mind.”

He stood behind me and looked at my reflection with a smug, self-satisfied smile.

Then, he reached out to touch my shoulder, but I deftly avoided his touch a split second before he could graze against me.

“Yes, I will do my duty.” I turned to him and flashed a bright smile.

He frowned instantly, almost on instinct. Then, he scoffed dismissively before tossing an exquisite jewelry box onto the table.

“I had the designer customize this for you.”

“Thank you.” I picked up the box and took the necklace to put it on.

When we boarded the private jet, I saw Alice already waiting inside. She had a cashmere shawl draped around her.

“Grace, I’m glad you finally came to your senses,” she remarked softly while subconsciously rubbing her stomach. “We have to get along from now on for my child and for Xavier’s sake.”

I ignored her and settled down on the seat across from her. Then, I stared blankly out the window.

The manor on the ground slowly shrank into a tiny dot. In my mind, I said goodbye to it and made my peace with five years gone by.

When we arrived in Zurosh, it was snowing heavily.

Xavier took my hand as if it were the most natural thing in the world and led me onto the red carpet.

Meanwhile, his beloved Alice attended as his stylist. She entered through a side door with her staff.

The moment I stepped into the hall, I felt two pairs of eyes fixed on me.

Hidden deep within the crowd was Noah, who was dressed in a dark gray suit and casually swirling a wineglass.

Only a short distance behind him stood a woman also dressed handsomely in a suit. Her expression was composed and stoic.

She was my personal assistant, Rosalia.

My breath caught in my throat while I unconsciously loosened my grip around Xavier’s hands.

“Watch yourself, Grace.” Xavier leaned into my ear and whispered a warning.

“I know.” I forced a smile.

That was when Noah, who had been hovering some distance away, parted the crowd and walked straight toward us.

“Hey, long time no see.” He stopped in front of us and greeted us. The entire time, he hardly paid notice to Xavier and was focused on me instead.

“Grace, you’ve lost weight since the last time we met. I take it that the cooking of Don Whitmore’s chef isn’t to your liking.”

Then, he casually put a hand out to receive my hand for a kiss.

“Noah, back off from my wife.” Xavier asserted his dominance by pulling me away from him.

Noah was not deterred by Xavier’s brazen hostility. He withdrew his hand, then traced the rim of his wine glass with his fingers before remarking with a rather audacious smile.

“Don’t be so uptight, Xavier.”

He spoke candidly, making sure to keep his volume just loud enough for the surrounding guests to hear him, “I was just worried you’d be too focused on others and end up neglecting your pregnant wife.

“By the way, I heard you brought your widowed sister-in-law to live with you, didn’t you? Sam must be glad to have a good brother like you.”

Upon hearing this remark, the celebrities around us stopped to listen in. A deep look of intrigue appeared in their eyes.

Everyone knew that coveting a deceased brother’s widow was a gravely shameful and scandalous act in the mafia world.

Xavier sneered, “It is my responsibility to take care of my brother’s widow. You don’t have to worry about what goes on in my family, Noah.

“Let’s go, Grace,” Xavier hissed through clenched teeth while forcefully dragging me away to the other side of the hall.

I turned to glance at Noah and Rosalia just in time to spot them flashing victorious smiles at me.

Everything was ready. It was time to pull the trigger.

One year later.Somewhere amidst an island known for being a tourist destination, there was the sound of a baby crying.“Don't cry, don't cry, Daddy's here.”Noah gently settled the child in the cradle. His movements were delicate and practiced.I had an apron strapped around my waist and was stepping out of the kitchen with a tray of cut fruits when I witnessed the interaction. It was very heartwarming to see.“Is she trying to get your attention again?” I approached and leaned against his shoulder.“She just woke up. She must be hungry.” Noah turned around and kissed me on the forehead before asking, “Where are Rosalia and Annie?”“They took the tourists out for surfing lessons. They seem to be having a blast.” I smiled and shook my head.Noah and I had enough savings to live lavishly for several lifetimes. Regardless, we decided to run a resort on the island where I gave birth to our daughter, Sophia Gill.“The livestream is about to start.” Noah gently patted Sophia’s back

The wind in the cemetery was chilly and seemed to slice against Xavier’s cheeks.Though he stood gravely before Sam’s tombstone, he was smiling.Soon, he would return to Grace and take her on a honeymoon.By the time the car pulled into the manor, the sun was coming up.He stepped out of the car and swiftly entered the house, into the living room.“Where's the Donna?” he asked one of the housemaids assigned to nightwatch duty. The housemaid hesitated and tried to conceal her panic, “The Donna has been in your room the entire time and never came out…”Xavier had an ominous feeling.“No,” he grunted before rushing toward his room.He went straight to the dressing room and parted the coats out of the way before reaching for a mechanism. There was still a faint scent of Grace’s perfume mingling in the air of the secret passage. It must be Jakob. He was the only one who knew about the secret passage.Ten minutes later, two of his men brought Jakob into the living room.He was h

When the boat docked on the island, the shimmering sea was reflecting the radial glow of the sun above. As soon as I hopped off the boat, my feet sank into a soft cushion of sand, which blanketed my toes with warmth. The heat seemed to surge into the depths of my heart, and I felt like crying.I wasn’t dreaming.I made it out.“Grace!” I heard a familiar voice and looked up abruptly to see Noah calling out from under a coconut tree only a short distance away. He was wearing a white shirt and looked tall and as striking as ever.He took off and ran to me.“You’re back… Just like you said you would.” He pulled me into a tight embrace. “I’ve been waiting for you for so long.”The heat of his body coursing through me reminded me that this was real. I could smell the salty scent of the sea and the warmth of the sun from him. It was nothing like the nauseating smell of cigars on Xavier. At this point, I could not hold back anymore and started to cry.“Noah… I missed you so much.”T

I turned and entered his dressing room, where I carefully examined every inch of the wall.Jakob told me this was where I could find the secret passage leading to the back door. It was a feature they intentionally left behind when reconstructing the manor to serve as an emergency escape.I traced my finger against a bevelled panel and felt it loosen ever so slightly. When I applied pressure, the panel caved in as expected, revealing a narrow entrance. It was only wide enough for one person to pass through at a time.I mustered my courage and went inside. Soon, I arrived at a steel gate which I unlocked with the key. After I followed the passage to the back door, I heaved a sigh of relief. Then, I went back the same path I had come and draped several large coats over the entrance to keep it hidden. I made sure that there would be no signs to tip him off. Now, all I had to do was play the role of a wife who had “forgiven” him. When he woke up, all he remembered was me agreeing to

It was dark by the time I returned to the manor. I heard heavy footsteps approaching my door soon after I entered.“Grace, open the door.”Xavier reeked of alcohol, so much that I could smell it through a closed door.I hesitated for a moment before getting up to open the door.I found him perched right outside the doorway, his figure swaying slightly as if he was having trouble keeping his balance. Several buttons of his shirt were undone while his tie hung loosely around his neck. His deep gray eyes were bloodshot and fixed intently on me.“You…” His voice came out terribly hoarse when he spoke, “Why aren’t you hiding from me anymore?”I stepped aside to let him in while answering curtly, “As if there is any use in hiding.”He staggered into the room while casually tossing a bottle of liquor he was holding to the floor. Then, he suddenly grabbed my wrist and pleaded with a desperate look in his eyes, “Grace, I was wrong. I shouldn’t have forced myself on you, and I shouldn’t

After leaving Annie, I did not return to the manor right away, nor did I seek out Jakob.I was getting worried because my period was twenty days late.At first, I figured it was hormonal since my emotions were all over the place, and I had been losing sleep lately. Now, though, a brazen idea came to my mind.I had the driver take me to a nearby public hospital that was relatively out of the way. After doing a blood test and taking an ultrasound, I waited for a gruelling half an hour that felt like eons.“Congratulations, you're pregnant!” With a smile, the doctor presented me with a report.I felt my blood turn cold.My hand instinctively reached for my stomach. Though it was still flat, I knew that there was a child whose blood ran with mine and Noah’s.Though this was not an ideal time to become pregnant, it also felt like a ray of hope. All my hesitation and fear dissipated when it occurred to me that I was with child.I had to get out. I had to take my child and Annie and
