“She’s a virgin. Her hymen is intact.” The man said as he removed his two gloves from inside of me.
“You couldn’t find anyone to fuck you in the U.S., Livia? I thought you would have found a husband and had kids by now. But look at you, working waitressing jobs in downtown Chicago. Are you fucking stupid? You could have had everything in Italy with a rich husband.”
“I was just eighteen and the man was forty years older than me!” I screamed.
The image of the man I was supposed to marry before I ran away from the family almost made me vomit. He had yellowing teeth, a pot belly, and was bald.
He had a reputation for only dealing with younger girls. Once his young wives got older, he sold them to brothels. Who wanted to live that kind of life?
“I don’t hear Allegra complaining. In the face of you running away, she took your place and she seems to be enjoying it too.” Carlo said as he laughed. “It was the first time a man in the Mafia was grateful to have a sister as a substitute bride.”
I was disgusted by his words but I also felt guilty. He knew why Domenico was happy to take my sister instead of me. She had been sixteen at the time–younger than me. He was a pedophile.
If I hadn’t left, my sister wouldn’t be married to an almost sixty-year-old man. She would never forgive me for running away.
“Allegra hasn’t worked a day in her life unlike you. Your hands are even calloused. Is this what you gave up luxury for? You even hid the Rossi name. Do you know how many women covet your bloodline?”
He spoke like I should have been proud to be the daughter of a Mafia leader. He didn’t understand that I couldn’t handle it. The blood, the guns, the fear, the controlling behavior, and the lack of freedom got to me.
The day I left, I heard Papa plotting to kidnap the sister of his rival and sell her to a brothel. The disgusting things Papa said would happen to her made me rush to the toilet to vomit.
That was when I knew I had to escape. Five years on the run had gone down the drain because Carlos found me. He found me before I could make things right.
“Please, don’t tell Papa you found me. You can let me go and finally act like my older brother.”
He laughed and shook his head.
“You don’t understand, Livia. I hate you. You embarrassed Papa and our family when you ran away. He has known your location for almost a year and a half. ”
I tried to guess where I went wrong but deep down, I knew that information wouldn’t help me with anything. I had already been caught. I had to try and escape.
“This man is going to uncuff you so you can eat. If you try anything, I will let these men do what they want with you.”
He left me alone with men who looked at me in ways that made my skin crawl. One of the three men uncuffed my hands and the other my feet. They pointed a gun at my face.
“I will shoot if you try anything funny,” he said.
They handed me food and watched me eat. I feared it was drugged but I was also hungry. I hadn’t eaten the whole day when they took me.
I wanted to plead with the men to help me escape but I had no money to offer them. If Carlo had left one guard, I might have been able to escape. Three men and a gun were too much.
But then, he knew that I was dangerous. The most dangerous man in Italy, Papa, had taught me how to fight. I could shoot a target with my eyes closed.
“I don’t understand why the three of us have been assigned to watch her. She’s just a tiny girl.”
“Shut up and look at her. Carlo said she was dangerous and swift.” The other said.
They all laughed like something was funny. They didn’t consider me a threat which was great news for me because their guards were lowered.
When one of them excused himself to take a call and the other two got distracted, I took my moment.
I sprang into motion in a blur of speed. I kicked the man pointing the gun at me in the wrist and it clattered to the floor as he stumbled back with a grunt. I seized the moment, twisting his arm and flipping him over her shoulder. He hit the ground hard, groaning in pain.
The second man cursed and leveled his weapon, but I ducked low, darting toward him. His finger tightened on the trigger, but I was already inside his guard. I slammed my palm upward into his elbow, forcing his arm to bend awkwardly and the shot to veer into the ceiling.
With a quick spin, I drove my elbow into his jaw, sending him sprawling.
The third man, who was on the phone, hesitated, clearly recalculating his odds. His gun tracked me like he wanted to shoot me.
“We both know Carlo will kill you if you kill me. I’m worth a lot of money.”
“You can fight, we get it. Get back on the bed and let me cuff you before Carlo puts you through hell.”
Since I was near the exit, I dashed out quickly. He wouldn’t shoot me. Carlo would rip his throat out because I was worth a lot of money.
Adrenaline rushed through me as I ran faster than I ever had before. I could taste freedom on the tip of my tongue as I neared the exit. The sun's rays were a beacon of hope that maybe I could survive my family a second time.
I should have known my little moment of celebration would be short-lived. My hair was yanked before I could exit the warehouse and my body was pushed to the floor.
The kicks and blows started coming in faster than I could shield myself with my hands. I felt my ribs break the more I was beaten and I could taste blood in my mouth.
“You fucking whore! You’re more trouble than you’re worth. Nobody will buy you. You’re better off servicing my men instead of embarrassing me to your buyer.”
Those were the last words I heard from Carlo before my world went dark.
“He’s onto you,” Darko said to me.It had been a week since I last saw Fabio. I was out with Sonya in a club, and she was on the dancefloor with girls she had just met. She was having fun, and I took the opportunity to speak to Darko.I didn’t know how he had found me, but he had. He was there to warn me that my husband was suspicious of me, a fact I already knew. It was hard for him to trust me when I was slowly unravelling.I was seemingly tired of pretending to be someone I wasn’t, and I was revealing my real identity day by day. Tragedies were threatening to expose me before I exposed myself. His sister was right.I couldn’t keep these sisters anymore.“I know. He has been acting normal, but I can tell that he closely watches me. I had to shake off someone who was following me. He thinks there is more to me than meets the eye.” I said, with a somber expression on my face.My perfect little life was slowly falling apart, and within no time, my husband would find out my secret and I
“She’s the daughter of the previous Pakhan of the Russian mafia. She’s the daughter he wouldn’t claim. She was from one of his previous mistresses, who was a prostitute working in one of his brothels. She got pregnant and gave birth to Kira.”“She spent her whole life trying to be his daughter, and he didn’t acknowledge her because he always wanted a son. When he died, she was crushed, and she decided she wanted to avenge him. That was when she curated the perfect character to infiltrate your organization. I think she believes that the throne should have been hers.”“A woman like that isn’t capable of feeling love. She might have sought validation from her father, but it’s not revenge that drives her. She wants your throne, and she’s coming for it. I have to give it to her. She’s not an easy woman to track down.”“She has covered all her tracks properly, and she’s very smart when it comes to business. She’s gotten to where she is solely by her own merit. No one has propelled her or he
Maxim found me in the warehouse, standing over Veronika’s body. I never liked her, but that didn’t mean I wanted to see her dead. That was the last thing I wanted. She may have been a bad person, but she was a victim in her own right. All her life, people—men had used her to further their agenda, and she agreed. She was so greedy for the male attention that she didn’t realize she compromised more than just her dignity.“What happened?” Maxim asked as he rushed towards me to check if I was okay. I didn’t even look at him. I kept looking at Veronika. She had been right. Maxim would never see me the same way when he found out I wasn’t the person I pretended to be. I was a hypocrite, and it didn’t take a genius to see it. I pretended I was a good person when I was anything but that.I was a liar.“Are you okay? What happened to her?” Maxim asked, but I couldn’t get a word out of my mouth.Mikhail checked Veronika’s pulse even though he knew deep in his heart that she was dead. He looked u
I woke up tied to a chair in a warehouse. There was immense pain shooting through my skull. My vision was hazy as I processed that I had been kidnapped by Kira again. I tried to wiggle my way out of the ropes, and I wasn’t able to break free.“Stop trying. I have been wanting to do this for a long time. Do you remember the time you had me kidnapped so you would get married in peace?” Veronika asked as she stepped into my line of sight and slapped me.When I tried to lift my face, she slapped me again.“You ruined everything. I could have been the queen of the Bratva and stayed by Maxim’s side, but you came along and everything changed. You deserve everything that will happen.”She was about to hit me again when Kira grabbed her arm to stop her.“Fabio will kill us for this. We were never supposed to take her. I hate you for convincing me this was a good idea. You fuck up, and it's dangerous for the two of us.”Veronika scoffed and pushed Kira away.“Why are you such a pussy? This woma
Just as my feet hit the ground from the ladder, there was a huge explosion that threatened to knock me off my feet. It shook the tunnel, and specks of dust fell on the ground. Before I could process what was going on, there was a second explosion that caused the three of us to fall to the ground.“What the fuck is going on?” I asked. “If something happens to Maxim…”“Relax, nothing is going to happen to your dear husband. Don’t think I noticed that he went outside to speak to Mikhail. I’m not stupid. You think you’re sleek, but you’re not.” Kira answered as she got off the ground and dusted herself off.She was smart, I’d give her that. She pretended she didn’t see anything, but she had eyes everywhere. She was a conniving snake, and that was who she was always going to be. Assuming Maxim was okay, it was a plus that the explosion had happened.Kira knew the brothers had made up, and it just blew up our whole plan. I was glad I knew about it.“What is happening?” I asked as I also dus
We were still at the party and I was avoiding Maxim. I should have known Darko would stir the pot and let it slip that we knew one another. He knew I was keeping my identity a secret. How was I supposed to explain how I knew?I successfully avoided him for a while until I saw Mikhail pull him to speak. I scanned the room to make sure Kira wasn’t looking at him. I spotted her across the room with Veronika speaking with a client and I walked towards them to make sure they didn’t realize Maxim and Mikhail had gone out to talk. As I approached, I heard how Kira was speaking to her business associate, I realized that she was talented in that area. She could have built a business and ignored all other things but she was harboring ill feelings for the Bratva. That would be the end of her. If you coupled that with her working with Fabio, she had signed her death certificate. If I knew anything about him, it was that he never left loose ends. He killed any outsider he worked with. That was
