“She’s a virgin. Her hymen is intact.” The man said as he removed his two gloves from inside of me.

“You couldn’t find anyone to fuck you in the U.S., Livia? I thought you would have found a husband and had kids by now. But look at you, working waitressing jobs in downtown Chicago. Are you fucking stupid? You could have had everything in Italy with a rich husband.”

“I was just eighteen and the man was forty years older than me!” I screamed.

The image of the man I was supposed to marry before I ran away from the family almost made me vomit. He had yellowing teeth, a pot belly, and was bald.

He had a reputation for only dealing with younger girls. Once his young wives got older, he sold them to brothels. Who wanted to live that kind of life?

“I don’t hear Allegra complaining. In the face of you running away, she took your place and she seems to be enjoying it too.” Carlo said as he laughed. “It was the first time a man in the Mafia was grateful to have a sister as a substitute bride.”

I was disgusted by his words but I also felt guilty. He knew why Domenico was happy to take my sister instead of me. She had been sixteen at the time–younger than me. He was a pedophile.

If I hadn’t left, my sister wouldn’t be married to an almost sixty-year-old man. She would never forgive me for running away.

“Allegra hasn’t worked a day in her life unlike you. Your hands are even calloused. Is this what you gave up luxury for? You even hid the Rossi name. Do you know how many women covet your bloodline?”

He spoke like I should have been proud to be the daughter of a Mafia leader. He didn’t understand that I couldn’t handle it. The blood, the guns, the fear, the controlling behavior, and the lack of freedom got to me.

The day I left, I heard Papa plotting to kidnap the sister of his rival and sell her to a brothel. The disgusting things Papa said would happen to her made me rush to the toilet to vomit.

That was when I knew I had to escape. Five years on the run had gone down the drain because Carlos found me. He found me before I could make things right.

“Please, don’t tell Papa you found me. You can let me go and finally act like my older brother.”

He laughed and shook his head.

“You don’t understand, Livia. I hate you. You embarrassed Papa and our family when you ran away. He has known your location for almost a year and a half. ”

I tried to guess where I went wrong but deep down, I knew that information wouldn’t help me with anything. I had already been caught. I had to try and escape.

“This man is going to uncuff you so you can eat. If you try anything, I will let these men do what they want with you.”

He left me alone with men who looked at me in ways that made my skin crawl. One of the three men uncuffed my hands and the other my feet. They pointed a gun at my face.

“I will shoot if you try anything funny,” he said.

They handed me food and watched me eat. I feared it was drugged but I was also hungry. I hadn’t eaten the whole day when they took me.

I wanted to plead with the men to help me escape but I had no money to offer them. If Carlo had left one guard, I might have been able to escape. Three men and a gun were too much.

But then, he knew that I was dangerous. The most dangerous man in Italy, Papa, had taught me how to fight. I could shoot a target with my eyes closed.

“I don’t understand why the three of us have been assigned to watch her. She’s just a tiny girl.”

“Shut up and look at her. Carlo said she was dangerous and swift.” The other said.

They all laughed like something was funny. They didn’t consider me a threat which was great news for me because their guards were lowered.

When one of them excused himself to take a call and the other two got distracted, I took my moment.

I sprang into motion in a blur of speed. I kicked the man pointing the gun at me in the wrist and it clattered to the floor as he stumbled back with a grunt. I seized the moment, twisting his arm and flipping him over her shoulder. He hit the ground hard, groaning in pain.

The second man cursed and leveled his weapon, but I ducked low, darting toward him. His finger tightened on the trigger, but I was already inside his guard. I slammed my palm upward into his elbow, forcing his arm to bend awkwardly and the shot to veer into the ceiling.

With a quick spin, I drove my elbow into his jaw, sending him sprawling.

The third man, who was on the phone, hesitated, clearly recalculating his odds. His gun tracked me like he wanted to shoot me.

“We both know Carlo will kill you if you kill me. I’m worth a lot of money.”

“You can fight, we get it. Get back on the bed and let me cuff you before Carlo puts you through hell.”

Since I was near the exit, I dashed out quickly. He wouldn’t shoot me. Carlo would rip his throat out because I was worth a lot of money.

Adrenaline rushed through me as I ran faster than I ever had before. I could taste freedom on the tip of my tongue as I neared the exit. The sun's rays were a beacon of hope that maybe I could survive my family a second time.

I should have known my little moment of celebration would be short-lived. My hair was yanked before I could exit the warehouse and my body was pushed to the floor.

The kicks and blows started coming in faster than I could shield myself with my hands. I felt my ribs break the more I was beaten and I could taste blood in my mouth.

“You fucking whore! You’re more trouble than you’re worth. Nobody will buy you. You’re better off servicing my men instead of embarrassing me to your buyer.”

Those were the last words I heard from Carlo before my world went dark.

  • Don Maxim's Plaything   A New Life

The drive to where Maxine was taking me was longer than it was when he and I went to his mansion. I was so excited that I could barely hide it.I was one person who loved surprises so much that I couldn’t think of anything else. With Maxim, I knew his surprises were going to be over the top and they were going to make me swoon and be happy.Once we arrived there, he covered my eyes with a blindfold. From the main road, we traveled a few meters before I heard a gate open. From the gate, we went another few meters before it finally came to a halt. He got out of the car first and helped me out of it so I wouldn’t fall.He held my hand as he guided me forward. I could smell fresh air as well as the subtle chirp of birds. I could also hear a stream running.I couldn’t tell whether it was a fountain or a river. I didn’t know Moscow to have any rivers so I assumed it was the former.“Come on, you can take my blindfold out now. I know we’ve arrived.”Maxine seemed to follow my orders and remo

  • Don Maxim's Plaything   Questions

“What happened? You two are back from your honeymoon so soon? This is less time than I even predicted. I knew that man couldn’t stay away from his job longer than he needed to. He’s addicted to his work.”I could only laugh in response because I knew she was right. “How was Thailand?”“It was beautiful. I have a lot to tell you but I am afraid we don’t have enough time.”She agreed and we planned to hang out soon so we could gossip and catch up.“Why can’t we tell Kira you’re back?” She suddenly asked. I wondered how I was going to phrase the whole thing. Sonya was also close to Mikhail and the whole situation was crazy. Plus, I wasn’t sure if he was really planning to take over or people were just spreading rumors because they knew the two brothers weren’t getting along at the moment.“We had to come back. This wasn’t something I was even going to stop him from doing. Things are not going great.”Sonya looked worried. She had started slowly taking over her duties from her father. F

  • Don Maxim's Plaything   Hands Dirty

Our flight back to Russia felt longer than it was because we both couldn’t wait to land. I had gotten a lot of information from lots of people and I couldn’t believe what I heard.Mikhail didn’t know the position he had put me in. If I didn’t punish him for what he was doing, everyone in my organization would try exactly what he was doing, and I couldn’t have that.It was such a shame that he allowed his mother to call the shots and tell him how to live his life.I was so angry that all I could think about was wanting to kill someone. If it wasn’t for Livia touching my hand every now and then, I would’ve broken something inside the plane. She massaged my shoulders and head to ease the tension in my body, but it didn’t seem to work because I felt worse the closer we got to home.Once we landed, a car was waiting for us, as well as several guards. Mikhail had no idea that we’d come back because I had strictly instructed my most loyal man not to reveal this piece of information to anyone

  • Don Maxim's Plaything   Paradise Over

Our honeymoon didn’t last long, especially after Nikita called me. Livia and I were at a hotel having dinner. She hadn’t touched her phone and I hadn’t touched mine, but that didn’t mean we didn’t carry them with us.If we didn’t carry them, how would we know if an emergency arose? My line of work needed me to be alert at all times and to be ready for anything which I was.We were talking about our lives and reminiscing about our past when my phone buzzed and I removed it from my pocket. We stared at the name on the screen, wondering why my cousin was calling after I specifically said that we didn’t want anyone to bother us during our vacation. But my annoyance quickly faded when I realized that he wouldn’t have called if it wasn’t an emergency.Something had to be wrong to make him call.“Should I pick the call? He can handle things without me you know.”My fingers itched to slide the answer button so I could talk to him, but I didn’t want to risk upsetting Livia. This was our one ch

  • Don Maxim's Plaything   Ease of Mind (Maxim)

Even while I was on vacation, I knew something was wrong. I had this feeling in the back of my mind that my organization was in trouble and sooner rather than later, I would regret not leaving someone in charge. However, I didn’t want to leave Nikita in charge and make my brother think I was edging him out. On the other hand, I couldn’t leave my brother in charge because I knew he would sabotage the organization by letting Moya push his buttons the way she wanted. My father hated her for a good reason. I never said this to Mikhail but my father told me all about the relationship he had with my mother. She was manipulative and she could make him do whatever she wanted. She was also an ambitious woman who wanted him to overthrow the current Pakhan so she could become a queen. The man who raised me was far from decent. He turned me into an assassin as soon as he could, and he exploited every single person he came across. You couldn’t put it past him not to cross any boundaries. So in a r

  • Don Maxim's Plaything   One Thing (Mikhail)

Everyone was telling me one thing and I was starting to believe that it was true even though I didn’t want to. My brother and I had been at odds ever since my mother came into town.He was so quick to judge me and blame me for always taking her side, but he didn’t understand what we had been through when she left our father.I had done everything I could to protect her, and she was the only one I had at my lowest and when no one else was there for me.I had grown up a chubby kid who was bullied all the time in school, but it only took my mother one day to come to school and people suddenly respected me.I never knew what she did or what kind of strings she pulled. All I knew was that I was never bullied again after that day.She did everything she could to feed me, clothe me, buy me toys and make me happy despite all the financial difficulties we were having.
