“We are sorry, Miss. We tried our best, but the fetus was gone. We had to evacuate it to prevent damage to your womb.”
The word “it” echoed through my mind, cutting through my last strand of hope.
Yet, the doctor’s words, along with the beeping of the heart’s monitor and every noise inside the hospital were like a distant hum in my ears.
Eyes fixed on the large TV screen ahead, a numbing ache rippled in my chest; a pain worse than the devastating ache in my stomach.
Inside the TV, Aiden was dressed in a neat tuxedo, his arm wrapped around the waist of a lady whose elegant appearance matched his.
Here I was, hanging between life and death. Yet, my husband would rather spend time with his ex on an international TV show.
Sniffling back my tears before they fell, my palm settled on my lower abdomen—the spot where my baby had once been growing inside.
I diverted my gaze from the TV and closed my eyes.
A few hours later.
I didn't notice when he entered the ward until his cologne hit my senses. A unique scent that would have brightened my mood before.
My eyelids fluttered open, my eyes falling on the man who stood a few inches away.
Aiden moved forward, taking my hands before he fully sat down.
“Annalise, the doctor told me…” He trailed off, releasing a heavy sigh. “Why didn't you call? Why didn't you ask for help?”
My eyes traveled from his face, to his hands firmly holding mine.
I'd called for hours.
When I fell from the stairs and the stomach ache started, I’d dialed his number many times.
It rang and rang until the line finally said it was switched off.
Before help finally came and I was brought to the hospital, it was too late.
My child was gone.
“Annalise,” Aiden went on, as if bothered by my silence. “I know how hard you've tried to have this baby. I'll make it up to you, I promise.”
My lips curled, despite the pain.
Did it matter?
This wasn't the first time.
To keep Cassandra company, Aiden would ignore me on several occasions.
The first time, he'd canceled our honeymoon trip because Cassandra had an accident on set.
The second time, he dropped me in the middle of the road, ordering me to take a taxi home when Cassandra asked him to help her buy groceries.
The third time, Aiden had canceled our anniversary celebration because Cassandra twisted her ankle.
And this was… the twentieth time.
“Annalise…” He shifted close, his lips parting as if he wanted to say something.
Then his phone rang.
Aiden froze and then brought out the device.
“Aiden, where did you go?” Cassandra’s voice sounded through the phone’s speakers. “My celebration party’s just started and all the guests have arrived already.”
Aiden’s gaze darted to me. In that second, I didn’t miss the flash of hesitation in his eyes.
“You’re supposed to give the opening speech, remember?” Cassandra went on, her voice trembling and soft. “If you don’t come, they’re all gonna laugh at me.”
Aiden was already on his feet, a panicked look crossing his face.
I looked away when his eyes fell on me.
“Annalise,” he murmured, his voice frantic but low. “This party means a lot to Cassie’s career, and–”
“You can go.”
Before he finished speaking, I said, keeping my voice light enough to mask the exhaustion inside.
In the past, I would have objected. I would have begged him to stay and spend some time with me.
But now,
It just… wasn’t worth it.
A subtle gasp escaped him.
He had probably looked forward to my protest.
Aiden finally left, the door closing softly, his cologne fading as if he never came.
Three years…
For three years, I’d desperately longed and hoped for him to finally choose me first someday.
Three years of having to compete with his ex for his attention every day.
One hand left my stomach, and I used it to wipe the tear that had just dropped from my eyes.
I reached for my phone with the other hand, scrolled through my contact list, and sent a message.
[Tania, I need your help…]
Tania’s reply came almost instantly.
[Sure. Isn’t it to help you find the perfect spot for another dinner date with your husband? He’s always too busy to show up anyway. Are you sure you’re willing to waste your entire savings again?]
I shook my head, a bitter smile curling my lips.
Of course, I’d been delusional before.
[I need you to help me process my divorce with Aiden.]
“What happened to him?” The question tumbled out of me faster than I could steady my voice, my chest already tightening with a dread I couldn’t quite name yet, something instinctive kicking in before my mind had even caught up to the words Jonas had just said.Jonas never got the chance to answer.A sharp shuffling sound crackled through the line, like the phone had been ripped away from his ear mid-sentence, fabric brushing against the receiver, footsteps maybe, and somewhere behind it I caught a voice, low and furious, demanding to know what the hell he thought he was doing. Then the call cut off entirely, the line going dead with a small, final click.Dead silence replaced it, the kind that rang louder in my ear than any actual noise could have, stretching out long enough that I had to pull the phone away from my face just to confirm the call had actually ended and I hadn’t simply lost the connection.Curiosity had already tipped over into something heavier, something closer to gen
“All you’ve ever done is bring trouble to this family.” Grandpa’s voice sharpened further, each word landing like another strike against skin already bruised from years of the same treatment. “Amelia only just came back to us, and we nearly lost her all because of you. Couldn’t you take even a single lesson from your little sister? She’s obedient, she’s kind, she thinks of this family before herself, unlike some people I could name. Now answer me. How exactly did you become a fashion designer without a single word to anyone here? Did you think we wouldn’t find out, or did you simply not care whether we did?”I stood there in silence, unable to summon a response, my throat tight around words that refused to form into anything coherent.Maybe it was exhaustion finally catching up with me, the accumulated weight of years spent absorbing his criticism no matter what I chose to do with my life, no matter how hard I worked or how much I sacrificed to prove myself worthy of the name I carrie
I didn’t fully understand why I’d agreed to come along in the first place. Ever since discovering I was pregnant, I’d been deliberately avoiding this hospital, terrified of running into any member of my family, or worse, someone qualified enough to take one look at me and confirm the exact thing I wasn’t ready to have confirmed by anyone else yet.Beyond that, something about Tania’s sudden enthusiasm for visiting Cassandra felt off, too eager, too calculated for someone who’d never been able to stand the girl even for a moment. I had a strong suspicion she wasn’t just here to check in and offer polite well-wishes at a hospital bedside. An hour later, we pulled into the hospital parking lot regardless, gravel crunching under the tires as Tania found a spot near the entrance.I hesitated inside the car, hands still folded in my lap, not quite ready to open the door and step out into whatever waited upstairs.“What are you so afraid of?” Tania asked, twisting in her seat to look at me p
Jonas was still speaking when a shuffling sound suddenly crackled through the line, and a heartbeat later, the call cut off entirely.I pulled the phone away from my ear and stared at the blank screen, blinking, trying to make sense of what had just happened. No dial tone, no message, just silence where Jonas’s careful, measured voice had been a second earlier.“What did he say?” Tania asked from beside me, leaning over to peer at my phone like the screen itself might offer answers. “Did Andrew actually sleepwalk his way outside the villa or something? Is that even possible while that drunk?”I shook my head, sinking back into the couch cushions, an uncomfortable weight settling low in my chest that I couldn’t quite name yet. Something about the abrupt end to that call sat wrong with me, though I couldn’t have explained exactly why if pressed.“Answer me, Anna.” Tania shifted closer, studying my face with growing concern. “Why do you look like that all of a sudden? And where in the wo
Stolen and caged his heart.I wasn’t entirely convinced that phrase applied to whatever was actually happening between Andrew and me.“I’m telling you, he definitely wanted to trap you with a pregnancy.” Tania leaned forward, tapping the couch cushion for emphasis. “That’s exactly why he swapped out your pills. A man who only wanted to pass the time with you would never bother going through that much trouble, Anna. Think about it.”The memory of ten years ago surfaced before I could stop it, sharp and unwelcome. I’d been so young back then, so naive, genuinely convinced that Andrew loved me without condition. Right up until the moment I discovered I was pregnant and told him, and everything between us had shifted overnight into something unrecognizable.“Anna.” Tania’s hands settled on my shoulders, grounding me back in the present. “Whatever history the two of you carry from back then, it’s in the past now. Neither of you are those same reckless kids anymore, and people change, somet
Annalise’s POVThe force of his shove sent me stumbling backward until my spine hit the wall hard enough to knock the breath out of me for a second.I stood there frozen, stunned by the sheer violence in it, in him. What had happened to him? Why was he sitting alone in a bar like this, drinking himself into whatever state had turned him into someone I barely recognized?I pulled myself together and took a cautious step toward him again. His eyes cracked open, glassy and unfocused, and he glared at me through the haze. “Don’t come near me.”I didn’t take the warning seriously. He was clearly drunk out of his mind, barely able to hold his own head steady, so I approached anyway, reaching down to pry the bottle from his fingers. “Let’s go home, Andrew.”He shoved me again, harder this time, and the yell that tore out of him carried enough force to draw attention from the booths nearby. “Get out! Leave me alone! Are you deaf, or do you just enjoy ignoring me?”The words landed somewhere t

My fingers instinctively tightened around the phone, hearing Tania’s words.I didn't hear her wrong, did I?“I checked your marriage certificate, Anna. It was fake!” Tania groaned. “Don’t tell me the scumbag tricked you!”Tricked me…Aiden himself asked me to marry him.Three years ago, he’d knocke
