I only glanced at the device once then went about my morning routine.

After I was done, I picked up my phone to find several messages piled up.

[Annalise, where are you? Why aren't you answering my calls?]

[Where did you sleep last night, Annalise?]

[What is going on between you and Alexander Sterling?]

[Are you still sad about losing the child? I already promised I’ll make it up to you.]

[I checked with grandma, and you weren't there! Annalise, answer my calls!]

His phone call came in again right at that moment. Without a second thought, I rejected the call and tapped block on his contact.

For three years, I’d let myself become someone even I couldn't recognize.

This felt like waking up from a dream… no, a nightmare.

I dropped my phone, sat down, and picked up the TV remote.

A familiar face popped up instantly when I changed to the Central City’s News Channel, with a headline that had my heart instantly drumming against my chest.

[Is This The Fall of The Sterling Empire?]

“Everyone knows that Alexander Sterling is the young genius who has brought the Sterling Empire to the spotlight after so many years of the family business struggling,” The newscaster revealed,

“However, this sudden turn of events has left the Sterling Empire on shaky grounds again. Most assume Alexander Sterling died in that attack, while others hopefully believe that he was brutally injured but still alive. But the real question is, will the Sterling Empire remain the head of conglomerates in the country for long?”

Xander…

Dead?

An attack?

My heart dropped to my stomach, sending waves of raw fear throughout my system that I forgot where I was for a moment.

I stood up and started pacing back and forth, rapidly scrolling through all the news channels to at least find a single news channel that would claim it was false information… a rumor to fool the people.

But no,

Every news channel was airing the same topic.

Xander might be dead.

Last night, his convoy was brutally attacked by a mass of thugs.

Most of the bodyguards lost their lives.

My brother was injured beyond recognition, and everyone speculated he wouldn't survive those injuries.

The only thing I could remember grabbing along was just my phone, as I raced out of my apartment.

By the afternoon, I was already on an emergency flight back to the Central City.

My heart didn't stop racing even after the plane landed at the city’s airport that evening.

My anxiety didn't decrease a bit as I took a cab down to the place I’d promised myself to never return to.

Even after three years, the mansion remained the same.

The towering building.

The enormous metal gates.

After a whole day of running, I paused, my eyes fixed on the tall walls.

Hesitation replaced the fear that drove me back, and I found myself instinctively taking a step back.

But,

I was only here for my brother.

I must know what situation he was currently in. I would never be myself if I didn't at least glimpse his condition.

No need to announce my presence.

No need to let others see me.

Fortunately, the security men seemed to be distracted by the group of paparazzi who were fighting to go in.

Not only was the paparazzi here.

The news media crew and some citizens were also here, demanding to know his current condition.

I slipped away from the crowd, walked around the mansion’s walls, all the way to the back.

No security was patrolling here.

I cleared the small bush by the wall, revealing a small hole, but big enough that I could crawl inside.

After sneaking in, I used the back door of the mansion to enter the building.

Loud voices were coming from the enormous living room.

The family was around, and the fact that they were here, including the paparazzi and the masses outside confirmed my speculation.

Xander was being treated in the house.

Carefully, I walked up the stairs, straining my ears for any sound nearby. Luckily, I didn't bump into any servants or the Butler.

Soon, I found myself standing in the hallway where Xander’s room was located.

My feet took off as I rushed forward and grabbed the door’s handle, pausing for a second to listen to any voices from the inside.

“Argh! Doc, take it easy! You're killing me!”

Xander!

I barged inside and almost bumped into the physician.

My eyes fell on my brother, and my heart sank further, the fear inside me amplifying multifold.

They weren't exaggerating.

My brother was sent to an unrecognizable state, and every bone in his body seemed broken.

“Big Sis!”

Yet, his eyes lit up the moment I walked in, before they turned into a pool of tears. “You’re actually here, Big Sis! Am I dreaming? I thought I was gonna die without getting to see you again! Big Sis, see how I’ve become! I can't even walk. My biggest fear is that I might never be able to protect you anymore.”

“Oh, Xander…” My eyes clouded with tears, and my feet staggered forward. “Who did this? H-How could they?”

I sat beside him, struggling with words, my heart aching further noticing that I couldn't even hold his hands because they were both wrapped in a thick gauze.

“Ahem!”

The sound coming from the door pulled my attention. I looked up only to find the once-almost-empty room now filled with more people.

My eyes first landed on the old man standing in the front, his white brows drew together in a deep scowl.

“Annalise Sterling, you silly girl!!! So you finally remembered that you have a family!!!”

I stood frozen at the edge of the landing pad, staring up at the penthouse rising above the tree line, its glass walls catching the late morning sun in a way that made the whole structure look like it was glowing from somewhere deep inside. I remembered that glow. I remembered standing in almost this exact spot ten years ago, giddy and breathless, watching Andrew point up at the top floor and promise me the view from the master bedroom would make me forget every other sunset I’d ever seen. He hadn’t been wrong. For two weeks, that view had belonged entirely to us, mornings tangled in white sheets with the ocean stretched out gold beneath the windows, evenings spent on the terrace tracing shapes into a sky neither of us had any real interest in naming correctly. I remembered laughing so hard one night I’d nearly fallen off the lounge chair, and him catching me, and both of us laughing even harder because of it.The same building. The same light. And somehow it felt like staring at t

The moment the island’s name registered, I froze completely, my eyes locked on the screen like the letters might rearrange themselves into something less impossible if I just stared hard enough.Windemere Island.Memories came crashing in before I could brace myself against them, a flood of sensation rather than anything orderly. Sunlight scattered across turquoise water, bright enough that I used to squint against it even from behind sunglasses. Bare feet sinking into warm sand at midnight, his hand folded around mine as we walked the length of that private beach with nowhere else in the world to be. Laughter that used to come easily back then, unguarded in a way I hadn’t managed since, back before I understood exactly what that particular happiness would eventually cost me. And beneath all of it, underneath the golden, sun-soaked version of those two weeks that I still occasionally dreamed about against my own will, something darker waited, patient and unmoving, something I’d spen

  • Don’t Beg for Love    170. Found Him

“What happened to him?” The question tumbled out of me faster than I could steady my voice, my chest already tightening with a dread I couldn’t quite name yet, something instinctive kicking in before my mind had even caught up to the words Jonas had just said.Jonas never got the chance to answer.A sharp shuffling sound crackled through the line, like the phone had been ripped away from his ear mid-sentence, fabric brushing against the receiver, footsteps maybe, and somewhere behind it I caught a voice, low and furious, demanding to know what the hell he thought he was doing. Then the call cut off entirely, the line going dead with a small, final click.Dead silence replaced it, the kind that rang louder in my ear than any actual noise could have, stretching out long enough that I had to pull the phone away from my face just to confirm the call had actually ended and I hadn’t simply lost the connection.Curiosity had already tipped over into something heavier, something closer to gen

“All you’ve ever done is bring trouble to this family.” Grandpa’s voice sharpened further, each word landing like another strike against skin already bruised from years of the same treatment. “Amelia only just came back to us, and we nearly lost her all because of you. Couldn’t you take even a single lesson from your little sister? She’s obedient, she’s kind, she thinks of this family before herself, unlike some people I could name. Now answer me. How exactly did you become a fashion designer without a single word to anyone here? Did you think we wouldn’t find out, or did you simply not care whether we did?”I stood there in silence, unable to summon a response, my throat tight around words that refused to form into anything coherent.Maybe it was exhaustion finally catching up with me, the accumulated weight of years spent absorbing his criticism no matter what I chose to do with my life, no matter how hard I worked or how much I sacrificed to prove myself worthy of the name I carrie

  • Don’t Beg for Love    168. Who Permit You?

I didn’t fully understand why I’d agreed to come along in the first place. Ever since discovering I was pregnant, I’d been deliberately avoiding this hospital, terrified of running into any member of my family, or worse, someone qualified enough to take one look at me and confirm the exact thing I wasn’t ready to have confirmed by anyone else yet.Beyond that, something about Tania’s sudden enthusiasm for visiting Cassandra felt off, too eager, too calculated for someone who’d never been able to stand the girl even for a moment. I had a strong suspicion she wasn’t just here to check in and offer polite well-wishes at a hospital bedside. An hour later, we pulled into the hospital parking lot regardless, gravel crunching under the tires as Tania found a spot near the entrance.I hesitated inside the car, hands still folded in my lap, not quite ready to open the door and step out into whatever waited upstairs.“What are you so afraid of?” Tania asked, twisting in her seat to look at me p

Jonas was still speaking when a shuffling sound suddenly crackled through the line, and a heartbeat later, the call cut off entirely.I pulled the phone away from my ear and stared at the blank screen, blinking, trying to make sense of what had just happened. No dial tone, no message, just silence where Jonas’s careful, measured voice had been a second earlier.“What did he say?” Tania asked from beside me, leaning over to peer at my phone like the screen itself might offer answers. “Did Andrew actually sleepwalk his way outside the villa or something? Is that even possible while that drunk?”I shook my head, sinking back into the couch cushions, an uncomfortable weight settling low in my chest that I couldn’t quite name yet. Something about the abrupt end to that call sat wrong with me, though I couldn’t have explained exactly why if pressed.“Answer me, Anna.” Tania shifted closer, studying my face with growing concern. “Why do you look like that all of a sudden? And where in the wo
