The lake was black glass at dawn, a perfect reflection of the sky. Sierra sat at the edge of the dock, toes skimming the water, hugging her knees as though she could make herself smaller, quieter, invisible.

She hadn’t slept. Not really. Every creak of the lake house during the night had felt like Damien’s breath at her ear, like the press of his hand against her skin. Her dreams had blurred with memory, and when she startled awake, she couldn’t tell if the heat in her veins was real or imagined.

She thought distance might help, but the lake offered no comfort. The silence here was too heavy, too thick.

“You’re up early.”

Sierra jumped at the sound of his voice.

Damien stood at the edge of the dock, sleeves rolled up, shirt unbuttoned at the throat. He looked relaxed, almost casual but his eyes betrayed him. They always did. They were fixed on her with that same hungry intensity that made her body ache in places she couldn’t name aloud.

She forced herself to look away, staring hard at

The dining table at the lake house had always been a place for warmth, laughter, and stories from summers past. Tonight, it was suffocating. The polished mahogany gleamed too brightly under the chandelier, its reflection like a cruel spotlight on Sierra’s guilt. She sat between her mother and Damien, her fork trembling each time it touched porcelain. Vanessa was glowing as usual, her auburn hair pulled into a loose bun, a glass of wine balanced effortlessly in her hand as she spoke animatedly about her latest design project. “The firm wants me to take on another client in New York,” she said, smiling at Damien. “But I told them no. I want this summer to be ours.”Damien gave a small nod, his face the picture of devotion. To anyone else, he was the perfect husband, attentive and calm. But Sierra knew the truth. She could feel it in the way his gaze lingered too long, the way the air thickened when his eyes met hers across the table. And then under the cover of linen, she felt it. The s

The lake house was too small to contain secrets. Sierra knew that the moment she heard her mother’s laughter echoing from the kitchen that morning. Every wall seemed thinner here, every floorboard louder. And with Damien moving through the house like he owned more than just its walls, every step felt like a risk. She lingered upstairs longer than usual, hoping distance would steady her. But the longer she hid in her room, the more restless she became. When she finally came down, Damien was at the counter, sleeves rolled up, slicing fruit with precise, deliberate strokes.Vanessa stood beside him, sipping coffee and watching him with the soft smile of a woman who trusted her husband completely. The sight twisted Sierra’s stomach into knots.“There you are,” Vanessa said warmly. “We were starting to think you’d fallen back asleep.”Sierra forced a smile. “Just took a long shower.”Damien’s eyes flicked up from the knife, lingering on her damp hair. It was only a second, but it was enoug

The drive was long, but not long enough for Sierra. She sat in the back seat of Damien’s sleek black car, eyes glued to the blur of trees rushing past the window while her hands twisted nervously in her lap. Vanessa hummed softly in the passenger seat, chattering about the renovations she wanted for the lake house, how peaceful it would be, and how this trip would help them reconnect as a family. That word again family. It clung to Sierra’s skin like poison.Damien drove with one hand resting lazily on the wheel, the other draped across his knee. To anyone else, he looked calm, even content. But Sierra knew better. She knew the subtle curve of his lips, the occasional glance in the rearview mirror, the flicker in his eyes when they caught hers.It wasn’t calm.It was hunger. And she was trapped in the back seat with nowhere to run.The lake house emerged as dusk fell, nestled between towering pines, its broad windows catching the last streaks of sunlight. Sierra’s stomach twisted tigh

The house was too quiet.Too still.Sierra lay sprawled on her bed, one arm draped over her eyes, listening to the faint hum of the ceiling fan overhead. The quiet pressed down on her chest, magnifying the sound of her own breathing, magnifying the thoughts she couldn’t silence.Damien’s touch still burned on her skin like an echo. His words dark, commanding, impossible to ignore looped in her head until she wanted to scream just to drown them out. You’re mine, Sierra. That’s the only truth that matters. She rolled onto her side, clutching the pillow like it might keep her anchored to sanity. Her body buzzed with want, but her conscience screamed. Every kiss she gave him was a knife pointed at her mother’s back. Every moan was a betrayal. Her phone buzzed on the nightstand. She jolted, heart in her throat, grabbing it with trembling fingers. For half a second, she prayed it was anyone else a classmate, a friend, a meaningless notification. A reminder that she had another life beyond t

Morning light streamed through the dining room windows, golden and too bright for Sierra’s pounding head. She sat at the long wooden table, staring into her untouched bowl of fruit while her mother moved around the kitchen, humming softly as though nothing in the world was amiss. But everything was amiss. Sierra’s skin still burned from Damien’s hands last night, her lips still tingled from his kisses. Every breath she took felt like stolen air.Across from her, Damien looked unshaken, as though he hadn’t crept into her room, pressed her against the wall, and silenced her with forbidden lips while her mother walked the halls. He was in his usual suit, crisp and commanding, sipping his coffee without a flicker of unease. She hated him for that composure. And she wanted him even more because of it.“Are you working late again tonight?” Vanessa asked, sliding into her chair.Damien glanced at her over the rim of his mug. “Possibly. Depends on how things go today.”Vanessa’s lips pressed
