- SIENNA-

I was almost done with my makeup when the doorbell rang. I ran to open it and found Michelle and Haley standing on my doormat.

"Girl, you look amazing," Michelle said and hugged me. "I can’t believe my baby is getting married before me."

"Oh, shut up, Michelle," I replied. Poor Hank wanted to marry you the day after you met him. You’re the one stalling." I pull away and adjust my new dress. It's a boho-style white lace sundress with puff sleeves, fitted bodice, and a flare A-line skirt that falls just above my knees. I loved it at first sight and plan on wearing it again and again. It’s not a real wedding dress, anyway. I paired it with my satin peep-toe heels that showed off my legs and left my dark blonde hair down in big waves.

"Are you sure you want to go through with this? It’s still time to call it quits.” Harper mentioned again while she hugged me. She is still against the whole idea. "It is your wedding, for Christ's sake. Don't pretend that it doesn't mean anything to you."

"You know pretty well that it doesn’t." I answer honestly. It was never in my plans to get married. I really can’t commit enough to being in a relationship, especially a serious one. I don’t believe it can bring me anything good. "And it's not like I'm tied to a wall with a chain. The lawyer specified all the details in the marriage contract. Either party can back out at any time without any repercussions. And if we go through, the contract automatically dissolves at the end of the hockey season in one year. Matt just plans to stay here temporarily and wants to be traded back to his old team in Vancouver. Hopefully, my finances will be under control by then."

"Talking about Matt..." Harper suddenly smirks. "That guy is insanely hot! Michelle was not describing him correctly the other day. I wouldn't mind hooking up with him if I were you. He'll be your husband anyway. It will literally be your obligation as a wife."

"Oh no, don't go there," Michelle disagreed. "You'd sleep with him once and want to kick him out of the house. And that would be a huge problem because you can’t. By the end, you’ll have to hide from a guy that lives with you".

"I totally agree. There is definitely something that is not in my future plans. And we have agreed to live separate lives anyway, considering each other. Also, neither of us will be able to bring anyone home for sex." I get lost in my thoughts about what it will be like to have someone to share the house with again since my mother passed away. I tuck my hair behind my ear and gaze at my friends.

Harper looked shocked for a moment."Oh, no, no, no, you're not wearing your pearl earrings. You know what my grandmother used to say? Pearls mean tears to brides. Trade earrings with me. My aquamarine earrings will be something blue and also something borrowed. Your dress is new, and your shoes are old, right? So we've covered all the bases. Something old, something new, something borrowed, and something blue. We can't afford any more bad luck."

"You know I don't believe that nonsense, right?" I said, but I traded the earrings with her anyway. "Shall we go, or are we still waiting for Hank to come? Have you called an Uber already? I can't walk very far in these heels."

"Yeah, the driver is 10 minutes away. Hank's meeting us at the Courthouse along with Matt. He called himself the groom's best man." Michelle rolled her eyes.

It takes about 25 minutes to get to the courthouse. The guys were waiting for us at the front door. Hank, who is facing the street, saw us as we stepped out of the Uber and smiled. Matt turned to look at us, and I think I lost the ability to breathe. The man is a sinner in a white pressed shirt with a dark gray suit. I thought he was hot before in the blue Henley that he wore when we met, but this is a whole other level. I think my panties just melted.

He looked at me with an expression I couldn't decipher. I guess this is progress because at least he's not scowling like the other day. And I am sure I looked good today.

"Hi", I said to him, breathless. What the hell is happening to me? I cleared my throat. "You two look great." OK, that sounded stupid. Obviously, I'm referring to Matt because Hank is wearing what looks like an old bowling shirt.

Matt answers with a bored expression. "We have to make it look like a real wedding, don't we? Were you expecting me to show up in sports gear ?" He doesn't even bother to mention what I look like.

Never mind. The jerk was back, and my attraction was gone."Let's get this over with". Now I was pissed.

We enter the building and find the location of the ceremony. After 15 minutes, everything is finished. Surreal. I didn't ever have to kiss the guy, and now I am married. Meanwhile, Harper made sure to take lots of pictures, in an attempt to document proof that the event was legitimate.

I know I never dreamed of getting married, but the whole situation made me a little sad. After seeing what happened to my mother and her set of circumstances with my father, my view of marriage has been somewhat clouded. Well, to be honest, I don't believe in a happy ending for a relationship between two people.

We all come back to my apartment, and the girls notice my sour mood, but they don’t say anything. Hank went straight to the fridge and grabbed a bottle of Prosecco. He popped the cork and served it in some glasses that Michelle took out from the cabinets.

"Let´s make a toast", Hank said with his pearly smile contrasting with his dark skin. We all grab a glass and turn to each other. "To the unexpected couple who were the first of our friends to get married. May you be able to find support for each other to solve your problems during the next year. And may you overcome the issue of Matt having to shower in his suite, Sienna.

"Matt narrowed his eyes and turned to me. "Did you forget to mention something to me, Sienna?"

SEVEN MONTHS LATER ____________________ -NINA- "Can you stop picking at your nails? You're going to ruin that amazing manicure," Harper scolded me. "I can't help it. I keep hearing the boys cry outside," I replied. "I already told you, they're sleeping! It's all in your head. And your sister Daniela is taking care of them. She's a pediatrician, after all." She approached me and adjusted the tail of my wedding gown. She is probably right. The boys, especially Dante, cry so much I keep hearing them even when they are silent. No matter how much I feed them, they are still always hungry. They're a handful! Even with Chris's assistance, it's overwhelming at times. I wanted to handle everything on my own, but ultimately, I eventually agreed to Chris's idea of hiring a nurse. She stays for six hours a day, giving me the chance to finally take a shower or a nap. She was invited to the wedding today, as a guest, not to work. But she already had plans. My sister and my mum are t

-NINA- Sebastian's lifeless form hit the floor with a heavy thud. I leaped into Chris' arms, holding him tightly. Burying my face in his chest, my ears filled with the rapid thump of his heartbeat, bringing me comfort. He was here. "You came!" I managed to choke out. A torrent of emotions washed over me: relief at seeing him again, anger about him risking his life, and sorrow for his uncle meeting such a tragic end, consumed by his own sick mind. He kissed the top of my head, his hand cradling my nape. "Baby, I'd go to the ends of the earth for you." Around us, a lot of footsteps rushed inside, but my eyes remained closed. "Are you two okay?" a man's voice asked behind Chris. Releasing his grip, Chris gently cupped my cheeks with both hands, lifting my head. "Nina, are you hurt?" I opened my eyes and looked at him. His hazel irises were filled with concern as he scanned me for any injuries. "Just a bit bruised, but I'll be okay." I grimaced. "Ho

-CHRIS- "Owen, talk to me." I asked my head of security as soon as my uncle disconnected the phone. Since I came from the airport, we've been in my living room, trying to discover where my uncle took Nina. "The sign from his call came from New Jersey. Unfortunately, there is not enough information to give us a precise location." he answered, his brows furrowed. "I have to call my lawyer and prepare the transfer documents." My throat was dry. I didn't care about the shares, but what would my uncle do when he got what he wanted? He hated me and had nothing else to lose. He'll kill Nina. And he'll kill our baby as well. F.uck! Our baby! She didn't tell me she was pregnant. That's why she has been feeling odd lately. How far is she? We need to visit a doctor for a check-up. My mind was in overdrive. I needed to figure out how to solve this. A member of Owen's team approached him, holding out a tablet. "Sir, we have a lead on the mercenaries Senastian Hayworth hired. The

-NINA- I was still breathing. I was alive. But for how long? The warehouse was silent, though the echoes of gunfire lingered in my ears. The recent events replayed in my mind like a horror film. Next to me, Kirsten's body lay crumpled on the floor. Her head was turned away from my gaze, but I could see blood pooling from her wounds, running silently on the floor. To my right stood the burly driver. He was one of Sebastian's men. Adrenaline surged through me, a hot, fizzling sensation spreading across my midsection. I tried to take deep breaths, but there was not enough air in the warehouse. "I’m glad I won’t be hearing her voice anymore. She was really annoying, wasn’t she?" Sebastian's cold, gravelly voice shattered the heavy silence. Yes, she was. But did she deserve to die like this? I didn’t think so. "You killed her," I breathed the words out, my arms still frozen in a defensive stance. A nauseous feeling settled in the pit of my stomach. It was chilling

-CHRIS- "Would you like anything else, sir?" the flight attendant asked, setting a glass of sparkling water on the table beside me. "No, thank you," I replied, my eyes glued on my phone. "Are you sure you don't want anything?" She elongated the last word in an unusual way, prompting me to glance at her. With her white shirt opened below her bra, t.its practically spilling out, the flight attendant gazed at me through her eyelashes. I raised an eyebrow, my eyes locked on her face. "I don't remember seeing you before. What's your name?" "Rene White, sir. You can call me Renee," she said with a flirtatious grin. I really need to start using a wedding band. "Miss White, I hope I'm mistaken, and you weren't trying to flirt with me. That would be highly unprofessional conduct. Such behavior is not tolerated in our company. Is that clear?" I stated flatly, a scowl etched across my face. She quickly adjusted her shirt, buttoning it up until nothing was left open. "Yes, s

-NINA- It's Monday morning, and I find it impossible to concentrate on work. My body may be here, but my mind is still in Harper's bathroom on Saturday night, staring at the stick on the vanity. Two red lines. I'm pregnant. On Sunday morning, Chris called, concerned about whether I was still feeling sick. He shared that he had found evidence to finally put his uncle in jail, but for safety reasons, he didn't want to elaborate over the phone. He had to stay another day in San Francisco to handle some business, but he'll fly back home tonight. I didn't want to tell him the news over the phone either. I'll wait for him to come back. I wonder how he will react. He loves me; I'm sure of that. But we've never discussed the possibility of having kids before. Especially now, when I'm just starting my architectural career in the US, and he is finally taking over his family business. Our professional lives are already busy as is. On the other hand, he grew up alone, with
