Chapter 1

"Stop right there," Louis said coldly. "Shirley, go to my study and get Jenny's asthma medication. It's in the bottom safe."

I stopped dead in my tracks. Louis's study held the family's most secretive documents, and even I needed multiple approvals to enter.

And now, the safe that held secrets the entire family's survival depended on contained a woman's asthma inhaler.

A chill slowly spread down my spine. "I'm not going."

As if on cue, Jenny began breathing weakly in Louis's arms. "Please, Shirley. Can you get it for me? I feel awful."

Her little performance was so perfectly timed that it put all the pressure on me.

Louis frowned deeply. "Shirley, I know you don't like Jenny, but this isn't the time to throw a tantrum. Jenny can't wait for her medication. Are you really going to stand there and wait for something to happen to her?"

His words were cruel, as if refusing him would leave me with blood on my hands.

I suppressed my anger and went to the study.

The study I remembered had been all black. Now, pink bows covered the room. Photos of Louis and Jenny together were neatly arranged across the desk.

Louis and I had spent eight years together, surviving gunfire side by side. And yet, we never had a single photo together.

Suddenly, it all made sense.

No wonder he had spent every night for the past three months working in this study and stopped sleeping in the master bedroom.

I blinked, suppressing the sting in my eyes, and said nothing. I retrieved the inhaler from the study, which was secured by three locks, and handed it to Jenny.

Louis nodded approvingly and kept ordering me around. "Shirley, go to the kitchen and make Jenny some risotto. She just had a scare, and she needs to eat something nourishing."

I chuckled faintly, finding the whole thing quite absurd. "Louis, enough. You're the one who owes her family. Repay them yourself. Stop using me for it."

After I married Louis, I learned to cook despite years spent with a gun in my hands. The food I made was barely edible, and Louis used to laugh and tell me I was only allowed to cook for him.

But now… He wanted me, the Donna of the Cascino family, to personally take care of another woman.

Louis's tone left no room for argument. "Jenny can't stomach anyone else's cooking. She only likes yours."

I gave him a faint smile. "Louis, I'm not cooking for her."

Louis paused. He was about to speak when Jenny sobbed and cried out. "Louis, why do I feel worse after taking the medicine Shirley gave me?"

Jenny's face went pale. Her body shook, and her eyes were full of fear as she looked at me.

Louis shot me a vicious look. "Shirley, if anything happens to Jenny, I'll never forgive you!"

I froze, my mind going blank momentarily.

He bent down, scooped Jenny up from the bed, and hurried out.

His cold command rang down the hallway. "Lock her in the secret room. No one lets her out unless I say so."

The secret room was the prison where the Cascino family punished traitors. It was completely sealed off, and anyone locked inside was bound to suffer.

I took out my encrypted phone and called my father overseas. His familiar voice came through.

"Shirley, it's been eight years. When are you finally going to leave the Cascino family?"

My eyes instantly turned red. "Papa, send someone for me. I'm coming home to the Corsi family."

My father had Louis tortured in the Corsi family's secret room for a week before letting him out. Louis used all the money he had left to bribe the guards, hoping to see me just once. When word reached me, I was reading documents in the study. I didn't even look up. "Let him in." When Louis came into the study, I could barely recognize him. He had lost so much weight that his cheekbones stood out sharply. I put down the documents, leaned back in my chair, and looked down at him. "What do you want?" Louis stared at me with longing and stayed silent for a long time. Finally, he knelt on one knee before me. "Shirley." His voice was very hoarse. "I was wrong. The Cascino family is finished. I have nothing left. I know I deserve all of it." I looked at him without saying anything. Louis raised his head, his eyes red. "I understand everything now. I was a fool to let Jenny deceive me. I betrayed the love and devotion you'd shown me for eight years. I've already killed

Louis's eyes reddened. At last, he realized where the gown had come from. Yet, he had made his wife take care of another woman all this time. "Take off that gown. I gave it to Shirley. You have no right to wear it," Louis demanded. Jenny took a step back, and her usual sickly look vanished. She was covered in jewelry that had once belonged to me. She gave him a nasty, mocking smile. "Take it off? Isn't it a little late for that? Cascino's about to collapse, and you're worried about a gown? Your territory's gone. Who are you to tell me what I can wear?" Louis was breathing hard with anger. "Where did you get them?" Jenny scoffed and shook her wrist, making the jewelry clink together. "You said everything Shirley owned was mine. I'm selling it all on the black market, taking the money, and disappearing." Louis froze on the spot. Jenny looked Louis straight in the eye, openly mocking him. "Even now, you're still thinking about Shirley? Give it up. She stopped wanting you a

From the day I returned to the Corsi family, Louis had called me countless times. I blocked him and didn't answer a single call. Three months later, I inherited all my father's authority in the Corsi family. Everyone in the family trusted and respected me completely. I began going after the Cascino family. I had my people approach several of Louis's top lieutenants with offers they could not refuse. They had followed Louis for money and power to begin with. Now that Louis had thrown the family into chaos over one woman, some of them had been unhappy for a long time. Within just two months, the Cascino family had lost all its key members. Louis began to panic. He finally tracked me down after a business association meeting. His face was sickly gray while his chin was covered in stubble, and exhaustion showed in his eyes. Thanks to me, he had been having a tough time. And for the first time, I saw regret in his eyes. "Shirley, what will it take to get you to stop? We buil

As I left the estate, the night breeze brushed against my face. My father's car was waiting outside. Just as I was about to get in, I heard hurried footsteps behind me. "Shirley!" Louis yelled as he ran after me without even putting on his suit jacket. He looked nothing like the composed Don he usually was. His eyes were red, and his lips trembled. "Shirley, why didn't you ever tell me you were Don Corsi's daughter?" I looked at him without speaking. Louis continued, "If you had told me sooner, I would not have treated you that way." "Louis," I cut him off. "So if I was not part of the Corsi family, it would've been fine to treat me that way?" He was momentarily speechless before saying, "That's not what I meant." I looked at him, my voice calm. "Do you think I only got the seat of honor today because my father is the Corsi family's Don? Or do you think those eight years of sacrifice only deserve respect now that you know who I am?" Louis opened his mouth but couldn

The banquet hall fell silent. Many of the guests recognized him and stood up to greet him. "It's the Corsi family's Don!" "He hasn't attended a public gathering with the major families for years. To think he would be here in person tonight." The Corsi family was the most powerful force in Westland's underworld. Their roots ran deep, and every established family had to show them respect. Don Augusto Corsi was known for his ruthlessness and fierce loyalty to his own people. He rarely attended gatherings like this. The one who hosted the Candlelight Summit hurried over, bowed, and offered him the seat of honor at the center of the hall. "Don Corsi, we are honored to have you at our summit. Please, take the seat of honor." But he simply walked past everyone crowding around him as his gaze swept across the room and stopped on me. He took my hand and led me to the seat of honor in the center. Louis got to his feet and let out a cold laugh. "Don Corsi, what are you doing? Sh

Jenny suddenly spoke up to me. "Shirley, Louis is taking me to the Candlelight Summit tonight, but I don't have a suitable gown. Can I pick one of yours?" The Candlelight Summit was held once every four years, and the Dons and Donnas of the major families were allowed to attend along with their entourages. First, Louis had given Jenny the authority to chair the family meetings. Now, he was taking her to the summit. So this was how openly Louis could favor someone when he wanted to. I suddenly smiled. None of it mattered to me anymore. "Sure. Take your pick." Jenny chose the gown I had kept at the very bottom of my wardrobe. "This one. It even has your name on it, Shirley. When I wear it, everyone will know you gave it to me." She blinked at me with such an innocent look. The gown was the first gift Louis had ever given me. He had the gown tailored by hand for my eighteenth birthday. He had personally embroidered my initials on the collar. I had treasured it ever since
