Chapter 2

Author: White Reverence
The door to the secret room slammed shut behind me.

I leaned against the cold wall and slowly slid to the floor. When I put my hand on the floor, I felt a thick layer of sticky blood beneath my palm.

Tears rolled down my cheeks.

Eight years…

I had been by his side since I was eighteen years old, and I had taken three bullets for him.

When Louis took over the Cascino family at twenty-three, I was the one who placed the bloodstained Don's scepter in his hands.

We were married in a church basement with no guests. He had promised to make it up to me with the grandest wedding imaginable one day. However, he brought Jenny home instead.

It turned out I was just a steppingstone for Louis. Once he no longer needed me, he could throw me in the secret room and leave me to rot.

The guards were all loyal to Louis. In the past, they used to bow when they saw me and address me respectfully as Donna.

A guard pushed half a piece of blackened bread through the small opening at the bottom of the iron door.

"Out of all the people you could have crossed, you picked on Ms. Jenny. She's the one the Don cares about the most now. All those years fighting at the Don's side for nothing. Look where it got you."

I clamped my hands over my ears and pretended not to hear their taunts. However, I knew what they were saying was true.

I had no idea how long I had been there when the iron door finally opened. Blinding light poured in, and I raised a hand to shield my eyes.

"Shirley." Louis looked down at me as I curled on the floor.

I braced myself against the wall and tried to stand, but my limbs were numb. My knees struck the stone floor, sending a sharp pain through me.

"Apologize to Jenny," Louis demanded.

After all those days locked in there, those few words were all he had to say.

My lips were dry and cracked as I looked at him, my voice hoarse. "I haven't done anything wrong. Why should I apologize?"

That was all it took to anger Louis. He stepped forward, his boot splashing through the puddle on the floor.

"Even now, you still refuse to back down?"

He frowned, disappointment filling his eyes.

"Jenny nearly died because of you. Say you're sorry, and we'll put this behind us. You'll still be the Cascino family's Donna."

Jenny gently held Louis's arm and shook her head. "Don't force her. Maybe she didn't mean to do it. I don't blame her."

What she said only made me sound guilty.

The guards behind them lowered their heads, but I could still see contempt in their sidelong glances.

"Did you hear that? Even Jenny's willing to forgive you." Louis stared at me. "Lower your head and apologize."

I bit my lower lip, refusing to offer an insincere apology.

When Louis saw I still would not give in, his expression hardened as he left with Jenny.

"Then you can stay locked up in there. I'll let you out when you admit you were wrong."

The ordeal continued.

I developed a high fever and shivered uncontrollably, and I began to dream constantly.

My dreams took me back to the days Louis and I fought for our lives amid gunfire. Pursuits through alleys, conspiracies in basements, and contracts stained with blood. In my dreams, Louis was unfailingly loyal to me, but I knew none of it was real.

I had no idea how long I had been unconscious.

The guards seized me by both arms and dragged me out of the secret room.

Louis stood nearby. When he saw me struggling to stay on my feet, he gave me a mocking smile.

"What, you've learned to fake being sick to get sympathy?"

His gaze swept over my red, burning cheeks.

"Do you think being sick will make me feel sorry for you? That won't work on me."

I opened my mouth to explain, but my throat was so dry I could not even get out a full sentence.

He took me straight to the family council chamber without letting me catch my breath.

"If you're still going to hold the title of Donna, then fulfill your duties. Everyone's here for the meeting."

Every Cascino elder was seated in the solemn council chamber.

My face was red with fever, and my hair was a mess. I looked nothing like the decisive Donna I used to be.

Louis forced me into the Donna's seat, and whispers rippled through the room.

"So what we heard before was true."

"How did the Donna end up like this?"

Louis looked at me with a mocking smile. "You've always run these meetings. Let's see whether you've actually fulfilled your duties to the family."

The fever made my vision blur and darken. I forced myself to focus, but the words came out broken. I could barely make out my own words.

Louis smirked while the elders shook their heads and whispered among themselves, their eyes full of disappointment and contempt. "How is Shirley supposed to run a meeting like this?"

Just as the room erupted in whispers, Jenny came slowly through a side door.

My father had Louis tortured in the Corsi family's secret room for a week before letting him out. Louis used all the money he had left to bribe the guards, hoping to see me just once. When word reached me, I was reading documents in the study. I didn't even look up. "Let him in." When Louis came into the study, I could barely recognize him. He had lost so much weight that his cheekbones stood out sharply. I put down the documents, leaned back in my chair, and looked down at him. "What do you want?" Louis stared at me with longing and stayed silent for a long time. Finally, he knelt on one knee before me. "Shirley." His voice was very hoarse. "I was wrong. The Cascino family is finished. I have nothing left. I know I deserve all of it." I looked at him without saying anything. Louis raised his head, his eyes red. "I understand everything now. I was a fool to let Jenny deceive me. I betrayed the love and devotion you'd shown me for eight years. I've already killed

Louis's eyes reddened. At last, he realized where the gown had come from. Yet, he had made his wife take care of another woman all this time. "Take off that gown. I gave it to Shirley. You have no right to wear it," Louis demanded. Jenny took a step back, and her usual sickly look vanished. She was covered in jewelry that had once belonged to me. She gave him a nasty, mocking smile. "Take it off? Isn't it a little late for that? Cascino's about to collapse, and you're worried about a gown? Your territory's gone. Who are you to tell me what I can wear?" Louis was breathing hard with anger. "Where did you get them?" Jenny scoffed and shook her wrist, making the jewelry clink together. "You said everything Shirley owned was mine. I'm selling it all on the black market, taking the money, and disappearing." Louis froze on the spot. Jenny looked Louis straight in the eye, openly mocking him. "Even now, you're still thinking about Shirley? Give it up. She stopped wanting you a

From the day I returned to the Corsi family, Louis had called me countless times. I blocked him and didn't answer a single call. Three months later, I inherited all my father's authority in the Corsi family. Everyone in the family trusted and respected me completely. I began going after the Cascino family. I had my people approach several of Louis's top lieutenants with offers they could not refuse. They had followed Louis for money and power to begin with. Now that Louis had thrown the family into chaos over one woman, some of them had been unhappy for a long time. Within just two months, the Cascino family had lost all its key members. Louis began to panic. He finally tracked me down after a business association meeting. His face was sickly gray while his chin was covered in stubble, and exhaustion showed in his eyes. Thanks to me, he had been having a tough time. And for the first time, I saw regret in his eyes. "Shirley, what will it take to get you to stop? We buil

As I left the estate, the night breeze brushed against my face. My father's car was waiting outside. Just as I was about to get in, I heard hurried footsteps behind me. "Shirley!" Louis yelled as he ran after me without even putting on his suit jacket. He looked nothing like the composed Don he usually was. His eyes were red, and his lips trembled. "Shirley, why didn't you ever tell me you were Don Corsi's daughter?" I looked at him without speaking. Louis continued, "If you had told me sooner, I would not have treated you that way." "Louis," I cut him off. "So if I was not part of the Corsi family, it would've been fine to treat me that way?" He was momentarily speechless before saying, "That's not what I meant." I looked at him, my voice calm. "Do you think I only got the seat of honor today because my father is the Corsi family's Don? Or do you think those eight years of sacrifice only deserve respect now that you know who I am?" Louis opened his mouth but couldn

The banquet hall fell silent. Many of the guests recognized him and stood up to greet him. "It's the Corsi family's Don!" "He hasn't attended a public gathering with the major families for years. To think he would be here in person tonight." The Corsi family was the most powerful force in Westland's underworld. Their roots ran deep, and every established family had to show them respect. Don Augusto Corsi was known for his ruthlessness and fierce loyalty to his own people. He rarely attended gatherings like this. The one who hosted the Candlelight Summit hurried over, bowed, and offered him the seat of honor at the center of the hall. "Don Corsi, we are honored to have you at our summit. Please, take the seat of honor." But he simply walked past everyone crowding around him as his gaze swept across the room and stopped on me. He took my hand and led me to the seat of honor in the center. Louis got to his feet and let out a cold laugh. "Don Corsi, what are you doing? Sh

  • Donna's Revenge   Chapter 4

Jenny suddenly spoke up to me. "Shirley, Louis is taking me to the Candlelight Summit tonight, but I don't have a suitable gown. Can I pick one of yours?" The Candlelight Summit was held once every four years, and the Dons and Donnas of the major families were allowed to attend along with their entourages. First, Louis had given Jenny the authority to chair the family meetings. Now, he was taking her to the summit. So this was how openly Louis could favor someone when he wanted to. I suddenly smiled. None of it mattered to me anymore. "Sure. Take your pick." Jenny chose the gown I had kept at the very bottom of my wardrobe. "This one. It even has your name on it, Shirley. When I wear it, everyone will know you gave it to me." She blinked at me with such an innocent look. The gown was the first gift Louis had ever given me. He had the gown tailored by hand for my eighteenth birthday. He had personally embroidered my initials on the collar. I had treasured it ever since
