YUANITA

A sudden searing light tore through the darkness, nearly blinding me. I gasped, trying to catch a breath of air, as the memory of life seeping from me, clouded my mind. My lungs burned, and my heart hammered roughly in my chest, like it was being ripped from its position. I let out a loud cry, as the pain felt too much to endure. A familiar metallic scent clung to the air with something I couldn't name. Heavy with panic, my eyes fluttered open after adjusting to the bright light, but all I could see was an endless stretch of colourful hues, like I was suspended in a painting.

I could remember I had died and in my catholic faith, I was to face judgement.

   Could this perhaps be purgatory?

Suddenly, the pain I felt in my insides stopped. However, it was quickly replaced by a piercing surge of tingle, that crawled up my skin from my feet. I wriggled on the floor again, as I watched my muscles flex and stretch, the patches on my skin fixed and healed. A weight of something new which I couldn't recognize, filled me as my body disappeared into a huge wave of light.

My eyes snapped open again. But this time, the room was different. Dark and eerie, with black curtains stretching from the tall walls and red candles scattered all over the place. The table, fixed in the middle of the room, had unfamiliar weapons and bows neatly arranged on it. Not far from me, a high seat– probably a throne of some kind– was buried into the wall. It was exquisitely designed with diamonds and gleamed under the dark sky.

I looked around, trying to decipher if I could find something familiar and luckily caught sight of a mirror. It was fully covered with a red cloth, revealing only the down part which reflected my ankles. Gulping a hard lump of air, I took calculated steps towards the mirror and slowly unwrapped it. The sight I beheld made me gasp in awe.

My body, which was normally lean and malnourished, had become robust and ample. My hair had changed from short dark brown to a long wavy blonde colour, giving more hint to my newly double coloured eyes. I also took notice of the emblem- a chained black rose flower– perfectly tattooed at the top of my breasts. I had gone from looking miserable to looking unresistable in the blink of an eye. While I was still admiring my new look, a calm ethereal voice jolted me.

   “Welcome,” the voice announced.

I turned around to look for the person or entity but saw nothing. Defensive, I grabbed a knife from the table and flung it around, taking notice of the new strength that flowed through me.

“Who are you?!” my low growl echoed back at me, and I almost questioned my memory.

“You better show yourself this minute!!” I warned again, glancing around the dark room.

A shadow flew past behind me with the speed of light, and I turned in haste but saw nothing. It passed behind me again, knowing I wouldn't find it.

“Show yourself, you coward.” I hissed before the voice finally spoke again.

“Do not be afraid, child.” It tried to assure me, but I wasn't falling for that cheap trick again.

“Afraid?” I scoffed. “With the way things are, I wonder who the scared one is!”

“If you don't want me to be defensive, then show your fucking self!” I yelled back at him, although my shaky hands were giving me out.

“I have only come to deliver a message.”

“This must be some kind of joke.” I hated the anger I felt, which was mixed with fear. “Who are you and what do you want from me?”

A pause lingered in the room, longer with piercing torture of fright. Then, a black raven descended from god knows where and dropped an envelope on my feet. Curious, I picked it and opened it to find a neck piece in it.

Heart shaped, filled with a red liquid which couldn’t pass as any other thing but blood in my eyes. The envelope turned to ashes in my finger and vanished.

Strange things were just happening here. But the surprising thing was that I wasn't even scared. It felt like I belonged here.

    “You have been chosen.”

    “Chosen?” My brows knotted.

“To fulfil the wishes of the realm.” I could feel an elation in his deep voice. “As a missionier.”

    Chosen?

    Realm?

    Missioner?

Was I in some kind of enthrallment?

    “A what?”

Even though I try to deny it, everything that had transpired proved me wrong. My transformation, the power I felt and this place. It was anything but human.

“Look, I know that the things I'm experiencing are not normal. But, I'm not a fool to just give in to the mere talks of a voice I can't even see. How do I believe you?”

“You can't run from your fate.” He simply replied.

“And being a missionier or whatever is my fate?” I retorted angrily. “You must be sick in the head!.”

Before I could finish, the knife flew from my grip, twirled around in a threatening manner and lounged near my throat. An inch closer would drive me to my death.

    Again.

   “Watch your words.” He warned.

I swallowed, fluttering my lashes in hidden fear.

   “What… do.. you..want?” I stammered with a trembling voice.

“The world is greatly drowning in the malevolency of the evil ones.” He began. “Due to this, a special group of people have been appointed to send souls beyond redemption to hell.”

That was the longest he had spoken.

“So, I've been appointed to send souls to their doom?” He ignored my question, but I asked again regardless. “How do I even do that?”

“You have been granted special powers to accomplish your mission.”

    Special powers?

Instantly, another knife moved past me but I caught it between my arms. Almost immediately, I could also hear the bitter cries of a multitude beneath me. My eyes blazed red and I could see beyond the room, which was surrounded by a huge vast forest.

   “That should be enough proof.”

“But, you must undergo a full training on how to use your powers, before you can be granted a task.”

I hated the fact that everything was adding up.

“Fine.” I had to give in because there was nothing else I could do. “When do I start?”

“First, we have to take a vital precaution.”

His last statement was followed by another surge of light that completely engulfed me, until I gave in to darkness again.

SERAFINA My eyes darted from the lusciously embroidered invitation card lying on my dressing table, to the numerous dresses scattered on the massive bed and back to my reflection at the mirror. I was two hours late and my phone was nearly blasting from Delanxy’s unending calls while I was seriously contemplating if I had to go for the party. A sigh of exasperation escaped my lips as I connected the call, pressed the phone to my ear and lied to her about running into a fender bender. She muttered an apology and offered to send a driver but I quickly dismissed her, assuring her that everything was in control. I just couldn't shake off the feeling that something bad was going to happen at the party. But as the thought of Rapheal occupied my head, so did the thought of controlling it. That was my only cue to go for the said party. Thankfully, my makeup was already done and I just had to pick a dress based on the color of the day, which was written boldly on the front cove

  • Dooming the mafia devil    Inner battle

SERAFINA ‘Being a missionier wasn't difficult’ Marionette, my trainer, led her targets to their doom in three weeks. One time, she had a track record of five successful targets in two months. In her words, humans loved what they saw, so the plan was to always look attractive, adding to our advantaged bodies. Learning under her really made me anticipate my first target. Two months in and things were going accordingly. I knew she would be proud of my achievement, but the thought made my stomach drop into a frightening hollow. I tried to rack my head on many days to comprehend what was happening to me, and concluded it was because we slept together. A very stupid assumption because Rapheal hasn't been home ever since we visited the snow forest– ten days later– and the longing in me only ached more. I figured things might have been hectic at the office, given the way Ruben barged into his home study sometimes to grab certain files and books. When I try to pry into the

RAPHEAL Early morning had me banging on the massive front door of the villa my dad had gifted my mom on her twenty nineth birthday, while dialing her line for the untemnpth time which directed to her voice mail again. ‘Helen Dekoms here. Leave a message after this.’ With pent-up anger, I let out a groan of frustration, pressing the door bell and almost cursing her out. “Mom, we need to talk!” All my efforts were like water being poured on stone. My mom was determined on shutting me out, even going as far as changing the security passcode to the villa. I knew the place had a backdoor and another basement escape route, but there was no way I could decipher it without the building plan, which was stuck in there with my mom. My hand combed my hair, messing up the neatly arranged curls as a sigh of exasperation escaped my lips. “Mom! I know you are in there!! Just let me in so we can talk. I understand your feelings and..” The rest of my pleading were cut short by R

  • Dooming the mafia devil    An attempt to tame

RAPHEAL Every family has a black sheep. Someone who acts out of order and puts the others at unease for a while. It's not a constant occurrence but their actions always have their name seeping from it. Like a default setting, they get triggered by situations and go off like the ticking bombs they are, oblivious that their actions might cause harm to others. The title is borne by a child in most cases, making it easier to tame them. But in a case where the black sheep is the mother, things are different. Between the loud throbbing of my heart, the uncontrolled racing of my car and the sweat breaking out in my body, I had no clue on which to attend first. Given the incident with Emilia, I figured my mom would try to get back at me for defending Serafina. But turns out I underestimated how low she could go. Especially now that she had nothing to lose. The call with Ruben had been enough to pull me out of my reverie of Sera and Yuanita. I didn't wait for him to finish before

  • Dooming the mafia devil    Snow forest

RAPHEAL. Forty five minutes later, I was able to land the craft at the rooftop helipad of my private villa, which was surrounded by other buildings. Last night after our small rendezvous under the stars, Serafina managed to catch a little sleep after which she had jolted awake again, still drunk. She had engaged me in a small discussion where she slipped a small talk about wanting to visit the snow forest and ocean tower in the city of Ropps, almost making me reminisce about visiting those places with Yuanita. They were her favorite places. Even though I was conflicted between the striking similarities between Serafina and my late wife, I couldn't deny the growing feelings I was beginning to have for her. That explains the shock on Ruben's face when I had called him to book both places for today. As I stole small glances of her during the flight, I noticed that despite her testiness, she was slowly letting her guard down and enjoying the scenery. I couldn't wait for her react

  • Dooming the mafia devil    Let your guard down

SERAFINA. On normal mornings, I woke up to the chirping sound of birds and lucky days, aroma of food seeping through the massive wrought door of the room I shared with Rapheal. But when things changed between us, I began to wake to the sound of slow music in the room, an aromatherapy candle and a more engaging aroma. It would have been the same today, except my brain was threatening to explode right through its cranium. Hazily, I forced my heavy eye lids open and turned on the lights, which gave me an unexpected jolt of my memories from the previous night. It made a small smile cross my lips. Nothing better than a feel good moment of your plans coming to perfection. My eyes searched for my home flip flops which I casually slipped into and went ahead for a needed shower. Rapheal was already out of bed and given the circumstances surrounding the house, he must be basking in the kitchen, whipping up something good. The thought made another smile tug at my lips. But on reali

RAPHEAL. For someone like me, there was nothing like heaven. I realized this when I first committed murder at the age of fifteen. I had no redemption, until I met Yuanita. She tried to fix me, pouring every part of her into me. But I was too broken to be fixed. However, as I stared at

SERAFINA. I got into the car to meet Delanxy's blue eyes, buried in her ipad. She was exquisitely dressed in a long wrap skirt and brown aesthetic top. Her make up which clearly screamed ‘don’t mess with me’ was aided by her channel bag and Valentino boots. “Hey.” I greeted, enveloping h

RAPHAEL While her hand was dangerously clasped in mine as she headed for the front porch, my mind struggled to comprehend what had just happened. It felt like a dream, a dream no one ever imagined could happen. My mom, Miranda Dekoms was the power house of my lineage. Nothing and no one

SERAFINA. The mirror never lied. As I sat before my vanity table, slowly applying my makeup, I couldn't help but stare at my true form that gleamed back at me. Eyes blazing bright red. A dark shadow with sword stretched behind me. Rose tattoo blinking on my chest. Thankf
