JAYDEN’S POV

“What the fuck is his problem?” Storming out of the class like the world was coming to an end.

“Not like it’s my problem though.” I couldn’t care any less about Zander and his little tantrums. Speaking of the devil, Zander returns looking so pale that one would think they drained away all color from his face.

“Hey golden boy” Marcus called, “What got you looking so pale? You seen a ghost”

Zander walks past him as if Marcus were nothing more than an actual brick wall. From the corner of my eyes, I could see Tristian trying to talk to him but I couldn’t exactly make out the words. Zander just stared straight ahead like a robot.

“Probably another stunt to get attention, as usual.” I tell Marcus.

“Why don’t you shut your mouth and pick up the phone?” Tristian says, “Pick up the phone like the puppet you are. Daddy’s calling.” I shot him a glare sharp enough to cut glass.

“You don’t scare me, Sinclair.”

If there was something else I hated more than Zander and Marcus, It was my father.

My phone buzzed again.

I stared at his name until it stopped ringing.

A second later... It rang again.

I left the class without even asking for permission, scraping my seat loud enough that I was sure it was heard echoed through the entire hall. There was no way I was going to sit through the entire lesson with his voice coming through my phone.

The second I stopped in the empty hallway, I answered.

“What?”

“You wasted time in picking my calls.” my father said, his voice void of any emotion.

“I was in class”

“I don’t care about your whereabouts”

Of course he didn’t.

“Starting this Saturday, you’ll report to Sinclair Empire immediately after school.” I immediately frowned.

“What”

“You’re going to begin your training.”

“I’m still in school.”

“Did I stutter? You better start learning how to manage both.”

“You’ve got to be fucking shitting me.” I say as I let out a humorless laugh.

“Does it sound like I’m joking?”

Silence.

“You know you’re eventually going to inherit this company, Jayden. It’s time you started like it.

“Haven’t I made it clear to you and everyone else that I don’t want your company? I don’t want any stupid business Empire. I fucking love art, the same way mum used too.”

“You don’t get to have an opinion in this.”

My grip tightened around my phone and I wondered how it hadn’t already broken into pieces.”

“I’ve already signed the paperwork. You’ll begin as soon as you step feet into the building.”

“And one more thing,” he continued. “Don’t ever mention that woman when speaking to me.” Before I could say anything, the line went dead.

I stared at the screen for a few seconds before letting out a bitter scoff.

“Unfuckingbelievable.” I mutter to myself.

He never asked.

He decided.

He commanded.

And everyone was always expected to obey like dummies.

Putting my phone back into my pocket, I dragged my palm through my hair, “I need to attend a party before I actually lose my mind.”

I headed back towards the classroom, convincing myself that there was no was the day could get any worse.

I was wrong.

Just as I was about to enter, the teacher looked up from the attendance sheet.

"Since this is your first week back, I'll be assigning partners for this terms project."

Please don't say my name.

"Mr. Hades, glad that you made it back in time to hear the announcement."

My stomach dropped.

“Zander Hades and Jayden Sinclair will be pairing up for the project this term.” I froze.

“SIR?! You’re kidding right?” Zander replied just before I could even say anything. Staring at me at the door like I was the one who personally ruined his life.

Funny.

Because I was thinking the exact same thing.

The teacher adjusted his glasses.

"Do I look like I'm joking, Mr. Hades?"

"With all due respect, sir," Zander began, "I'd rather work alone."

"So would I," I said at the same time.

Silence filled the whole room. I was sure if a pin dropped now, the whole class would hear it.

Marcus leaned over his desk, grinning at me like he'd just won the lottery. "I'd pay good money to watch this."

"Not now Marcus," I shot back.

"Oh, here we go," Tristian muttered from the back.

The teacher clapped his hands once, silencing the room.

"Unfortunately for both of you, this isn't a negotiation."

He walked to the whiteboard and wrote down the assignment. "Your project will take up thirty percent of your final grade. each pair will create an original piece inspired by the theme IDENTITY. Along with your artwork, you'll submit a written explanation of the meaning behind it.

Great.

"So unless one of you plans on failing my class, you'll learn to work together."

I glanced at Zander. He looked just as fed up as I felt.

The bell rang.

Students immediately stood, conversations erupting around the room.

Marcus slung an arm over my shoulder. "So..." he said, trying to hide his laughter, which he failed terribly to hide. "How's married life?"

I shoved his arm off.

"One more joke and I'm going to snap your hand off from its joint.”

“I’ll pass.”

Across the room, Tristian was already talking quietly to Zander. Zander nodded once before grabbing his backpack and walking toward the door.

He hadn't even turned around.

"The library. Four o'clock." He said it like an order.

A laugh escaped me. "I don't take orders."

"Then fail."

With that, he walked out of the classroom.

I watched him disappear into the hallway before shaking my head.

Cocky bastard.

JAYDEN’s POVBy the time I got back to the dorm after stalling to avoid talking with Zander tonight, the hallway was dead quiet, probably because everyone was tipsy as hell. I finally stopped in front of the dorm door and unlocked it. The only light in the room came from the moon reflecting through. I shut the door as quietly as I could and looked toward the other side of the room when I heard shuffling.“Zander.” He was turned away from me, curled up beneath the blanket with his back facing the room. It looked like he had fell asleep moments ago. For a second, I just stood there.I couldn’t tell if he was asleep or pretending to be so I finally shifted gaze to scan through the room.My hoodie and most of my stuffs were sprawled on my bed.I frowned.“He’d moved all my stuffs from his side of the room, huh?” I said as I felt myself get a bit irritated by the thought of it.I picked it up the hoodie, brushing my thumb over the sleeve before tossing it onto my chair.“Guess this means h

ZANDER’s POVStanding at the corner of the room, looking like the lost one here, I spot Jayden at the center of the room, surrounded by a girl and another guy.“How amusing.” I muttered to myself “I should’ve been in the dorm resting from this stressful as fuck semester.” I groaned in distress.Just as I was about to walk up to Jayden to tell him I was leaving, a man who looked to be in his late twenties walked up to me.“Hi. Excuse me…?” I stared at him because there’s no way he could be talking to me.“Um……are you talking to me?” I pointed at myself and looked up to still find him staring and standing in my front.“Yeah…. don’t think an old man like me should be here?” He said with a hint of teasing under his tone.“It’s not that.” I giggled because his demeanor and his way of speaking didn’t sound or look similar.“It doesn’t look like you’re interested in being here at all.”“Well, I wouldn’t willing come to a party.” I looked around, “My fri—roommate forced me here.”“Who?”I sea

JAYDEN’s POVThe party was already in full swing by the time I finished getting ready.Music pounded through the walls of the dorm, voices echoing from down the hallway. People laughing, shouting, as the alcohol had already taken over them. I grabbed my phone and wallet before glancing toward the bathroom.“Are you done yet, Princess?” I called out to Zander, waiting for him to finish preparing.“Don’t call me Princess, asshole?” Zander shouted out from the bathroomThe door finally clicked open and for a second, my brain completely stopped working.Zander stepped out, adjusting the sleeve of a black lacey shirt with pearls decorating its neck and they hugged his arms before disappearing beneath fitted leather pants. The fabric revealed just enough of his skin to make looking away impossible. His silver necklace rested against his collarbone, a few rings decorated his fingers, and dark eyeliner framed his eyes perfectly. His lips had the slightest tint to them and his hair was styled

ZANDER’s POVI couldn’t sleep after what I just saw.Jayden had mumbled something under his breath before taking his towel to the bathroom. I wasn’t paying attention at first because my eyes were already half closed, begging for sleep after spending the entire evening working on our project. I’d heard the bathroom door open and Jayden stepped out. He made shuffling sounds as he raised up his shirt and out of instinct, my eyes cracked open for only a second and I immediately felt my entire body go pale.I saw bruises. Not one.Not two.My stomach sank. The bruises stretched across his back in uneven patches, some dark enough to make my skin crawl, others faded into sickly shades of yellow and green. I couldn’t even tell where one ended and the next began. Before he could turn back, I pressed my eyes shut and slowed my breathing, pretending I’d been asleep the whole time. Opening my eyes now would mean admitting I’d seen something I wasn’t supposed to and I didn’t think Jayden was rea

JAYDEN’s POV“You sure you don’t want to add anything else?” I glanced at the finished tattoo before looking at my new artist.“I’m good.”He wiped the excess ink away before stepping back to admire his work. “Looks clean.”I hummed in response, barely paying attention to him or anything else. The sting of the needle had long been replaced by the dull ache spreading across my arm. The words on my skin made me feel a different type of way. It was reclaiming a part of my self my father has cut away from me.“Just keep the bandage on for a few hours,” he said. “Wash it gently when you get home and NO scratching.”I nodded my head already up and planning to leave his studio. He chuckled.I pulled my shirt back on carefully, trying not to let the fabric brush against the fresh ink. He probably thought I was some masochist, considering how I barely reacted during the whole process and how I’m moving now. It still burned, but it was nothing compared to the hours I’d spent training with my fa

ZANDER’s POVAfter the whole shit that happened today? All I needed was to get halfway through this project and go home for the weekend. A little time away from Jayden and his friends.Speaking of the devil, he entered the room. I didn’t even want to say anything to him or even look at him right now because everything about him just kept reminding me about the cafeteria and I couldn’t start pretending like I was in the mood.“You came back.”I felt my blood boil and any little hope I had of us becoming neutral totally evaporate. How could this be the first he says to me after acting like I didn’t even exist. Even if he hated my guts, a simple apology— or at least some sign that he gave a damn would’ve been enough. “About the project.” I changed the topic. I just needed us to work on it today and finish some of it so we could get away from each other. “We should decide the parts we’re going to cover before you leave for the weekend.”I know I sounded like an asshole, but I didn’t ca
