Meryl peeked from her place around the edge of the stairs. When she looked straight up, she saw her stepmother, Lady Judith. Her hair was a mess. Closing the closet, Meryl walked to the bed, her breath coming out shallow because of anger. She brushed the edge of the heavy tapestry of the bed and ambled to the side table and then to the long table. She saw several glass bowls and found that all of them were empty. Dark red stains spotted their bottoms. Several thick syringes were strewn across the table. She picked up a bowl and smelled it and immediately recoiled.
