Chapter 4

Author: Summer Forest
My fingers tightened around the report until my knuckles went white.

Why did I get a vasectomy?

I gave a bitter, humorless laugh.

Who else would I have done it for? Audrey, of course.

She was deeply devoted to her career and terrified of the pain of childbirth. She often said that having a baby would take away the life she had worked so hard to build, so she insisted that we would never have children.

I could not bear to put her through that, so even though I loved children, I agreed.

Throughout our marriage, we always used protection.

Then, some time ago, she came across an online story about a child-free couple. The husband regretted the decision in middle age, but by then, his wife could no longer conceive. He ended up cheating on her and having a child with another woman.

Audrey told me she was afraid I would do the same.

To put her mind at ease, I ignored my family and friends’ objections and got a vasectomy the very next day.

I had planned to tell her on our fifth wedding anniversary, so she would never have to worry about it again.

I never imagined not even getting that opportunity.

Fortunately, the nurse told me that since my vasectomy had been fairly recent, my vas deferens was still in good condition. A reversal procedure should restore my fertility.

I was still pondering over it when the door suddenly swung open.

Audrey entered the hospital room, holding the folder I had asked Ryan to pass along at noon. She did not look pleased.

The next moment, she tossed it at me.

She frowned. “I’ve signed the documents. Buying a house is a personal matter. Don’t bring things like this to the hospital again. What would Ryan think if he saw it?”

I almost laughed.

She thought that it had been the paperwork for the new house.

She had signed them without even bothering to read them.

Good. That saved me from having to argue with her.

I put the divorce agreement back into my bag. Strangely, the weight I had been carrying inside finally lifted.

When I remained silent, Audrey’s expression softened slightly.

“Get some rest. I still have work to do, so I’ll head out.”

I looked at her and could not help asking softly, “Audrey, aren’t you even a little curious why I’m lying here?”

She paused for a moment before answering indifferently, “Isn’t it just your stomach problem? It’s the same old issue. Get some rest and go home once you’re better. Don’t take up a bed someone else needs.”

I stared at her blankly, my heart tightening painfully as if something had clenched around it.

I did have a stomach problem.

Back then, she always carried my medication in her pocket. Whenever I felt unwell, she would bring me water and make sure I took it.

But somewhere along the way, my medicine quietly disappeared from her pockets.

Last week, while washing her white coat, I found a man’s cufflinks tucked inside.

They were silver-gray, with initials engraved on it.

I had seen it on Ryan’s cuff before.

Forget it.

I was too tired to summon the strength to question her.

I looked at Audrey. Before I could tell her about the surgery, the door burst open.

“Dr. Levingston!”

A young doctor rushed in. Panic was written all over his face.

“The patient in Bed 32 is deteriorating. The family is causing a scene, and they’re trying to attack Mr. Ludlow. Please come quickly!”

Audrey’s expression changed. She turned and left without a moment’s hesitation.

She did not even spare me a glance.

Her entire focus was on Ryan.

As I watched her anxious figure disappear through the doorway, the last bit of attachment I still had vanished completely.

Why should I sacrifice my chances of having children for someone like her?

I closed my eyes and made up my mind.

Then, I pressed the call button.

When the nurse on duty came in, I clutched the report and said slowly, “Please arrange a vasectomy reversal for me now. The sooner, the better.”

I looked at Audrey, my voice calm and steady.“From the day Dad died, we were never meant to have a future together.”Audrey remained rooted to the spot. After a long while, she suddenly laughed. It was bitter and full of defeat, like a gambler who had finally lost everything.“I understand.” She nodded, her voice hoarse.“Luke, I won’t bother you anymore.”With that, she turned and left. Her pace was slow, but she never looked back.I stayed where I was, watching her figure gradually disappear into the glow at the end of the corridor.I felt neither relief nor sadness, only a quiet, almost imperceptible sense of peace, like a book that had finally reached its final page.Five years later, Evan and I sat by the Selvara River in Piremont, Faronne, having drinks together. The years had sharpened him into an accomplished professional. He had become one of the most renowned lawyers in the industry, carrying an air of precision, confidence, and decisiveness in everything he did

Mom eventually pulled through. With the international team of specialists revising her treatment plan, she was successfully moved out of the ICU a week later. The day I received the news, I sat on the bench outside her room and cried for a long time, my face buried in my hands. All the fear, anxiety, and helplessness I had been carrying over these past few days finally found an outlet.“Luke.”Melanie handed me a tissue and crouched down in front of me, looking unusually flustered.“Your mom’s fine now. Why are you still crying?”I took the tissue and wiped my eyes, though they were still red.“Thank you, Melanie. You’re truly a kind person.”Without her, I honestly did not know how I would have made it through those days.Melanie scratched her head awkwardly and looked away.“Actually, I didn’t do all this just because I’m kind.”I stared at her, confused. She met my eyes, her expression serious, open, and completely sincere.“I did it because I like you.”I froze, unab

I called the police, and Ryan was taken away. The consequences awaiting him went far beyond losing his job.He would have to answer for deliberately provoking a post-surgery patient and causing her condition to worsen, along with the investigation into the previous postoperative bleeding incident. But I no longer had the time or the desire to care about what happened to him.Mom’s condition had suddenly taken a turn for the worse.Outside the ICU, the doctors handed me critical condition notices again and again.I went two full days without sleep, standing outside the glass and watching Mom lie there with tubes running through her body.Every change in the numbers on the monitor felt like a dull blade carving away at my nerves, bit by bit.Audrey stayed at the hospital the entire time as well. She slept even less than I did, dark circles forming beneath her eyes. But when I looked at her, I felt no gratitude whatsoever, only a deep, lingering disgust that I could not shake.I

“The surgery was a success. Her condition shouldn’t have deteriorated so suddenly.”The doctor looked genuinely perplexed.“Unless… something caused her severe emotional distress.”My heart sank.“Emotional distress?”He nodded.“After surgery, patients need to avoid intense emotional stress, especially when their heart and blood pressure are still unstable. Think carefully. Did anything out of the ordinary happen today?”Out of the ordinary?Mom had only just come out of surgery. Aside from the medical staff and a few family members, no one had been in contact with her. Then, it hit me.I looked up abruptly.“Check the security cameras.”Half an hour later, we were in the surveillance room reviewing the footage. The corridor outside Mom’s room bustled with activity. Nurses moved in and out carrying trays. Then, at 3:20 p.m., a figure appeared on the screen. It was Ryan.My breath caught, and I instinctively looked at Audrey. She stood just behind me. The glow from the

After that call, I rushed back to my hometown overnight. At the hospital, Mom was still receiving emergency treatment. The doctor stood in the corridor, his expression grave.“The patient is in critical condition and requires immediate surgery. Unfortunately, this hospital doesn’t have the necessary facilities. We recommend transferring her to another hospital as soon as possible.”My blood ran cold.It was as if I had been thrown back three years.Back then, another doctor had told me the same thing as Dad lay in his hospital bed.I lost Dad then. Was I going to lose Mom too?I swayed where I stood, on the verge of collapsing.Just then, Audrey arrived.“I’ll do it.”Everyone froze.Recognition flashed across the doctor’s face.“You’re… Dr. Audrey Levingston?”Audrey gave a brief nod.“Let me see her chart.”Within minutes, she had made her assessment.“The surgery can be done. Prepare everything immediately. I’ll perform it myself.”The surgery lasted a full eight ho

Over the next few days, Audrey followed me everywhere I went.We stayed at the same hotels, visited the same attractions, and even ate at the same restaurants.I knew the best way to deal with her was to ignore her, so I did just that. I focused on enjoying the scenery, taking my photos, and treating her as if she were invisible. But eventually, Melanie could not stand it anymore.“Miss Ex.” She dropped her spoon onto the table in the restaurant. “Do you have a stalking problem?”Audrey did not even look up. She calmly picked up a chicken wing and reached across the table to place it on my plate. The gesture was as natural as it had always been, as if our marriage had never ended.“I’m here spending time with my husband,” Audrey said. “How does that count as stalking?”Melanie smiled sweetly, but there was no trace of amusement in her eyes.“Let me correct you again. He’s your ex-husband, not your husband.”The tension in the air was thick enough to cut.I rubbed my temple
