Chapter 6

Author: Summer Forest
The moment I realized it was Ryan, my entire body went rigid.

“I’d like to request for a different assistant.”

I tried to sit, but the surgeon held me down.

“Stop making a fuss. Mr. Ludlow is the best nurse in our department. People would fight to have him assist with their surgeries, and he came here for you personally. You should consider yourself lucky.”

I tried to speak again, but the anesthesiologist had already stepped forward.

“Relax. You’ll be asleep before you know it.”

The cold liquid entered my veins, and my consciousness began to fade.

The last thing I saw before everything went dark was Ryan standing beneath the surgical lights, staring at me coldly.

I had no idea how long I had been unconscious before the pain jolted me awake.

My lower abdomen felt as if a dull blade was twisting inside it over and over. Every breath pulled at the incision.

I opened my eyes to find the hospital room empty except for Ryan, who was recording my postoperative notes.

“I don’t feel well…”

Ryan came over, took one look at me, and said calmly, “That’s normal after surgery. Just get some rest.”

He lowered his head and went back to his notes.

But the cramping pain in my lower abdomen kept getting worse. Even breathing became a struggle, and the monitor suddenly began blaring an alarm.

I struggled to raise my hand.

“Nurse…”

Ryan looked up, his brows drawing together slightly.

“Stay calm. You’re just weak after surgery. We’ll monitor you for a while.”

With that, he turned and left.

My vision blurred as my consciousness slowly slipped away.

Then, through the haze, someone burst into the room.

“Luke!”

It was Evan.

I could no longer speak. I could only grab his hand.

He looked down at the bedsheet and immediately yelled, “Doctor! Call a doctor! He’s bleeding after surgery!”

The room erupted into chaos.

“His blood pressure is dropping!”

“Stop the bleeding!”

“Prepare for a transfusion!”

The sound of hurried footsteps and the clatter of medical equipment filled my ears.

Everything went black.

When I woke up, it was already evening, and I was alone in the room.

I heard a heated argument outside the door.

“Is this what you call ‘handling it properly’?”

It was Evan’s voice. I had never heard him so furious before.

“He suffered severe bleeding after surgery! If I hadn’t discovered it in time, he would be dead right now! Is this how your hospital takes care of its patients?”

After a brief silence, Ryan’s tearful voice rang out.

“I’m sorry. I really thought it was a normal reaction. I’ve seen many patients react the same way before… I didn’t mean for this to happen.”

Evan’s voice shook with anger.

“You didn’t mean for it to happen? Is that supposed to make it okay? He almost died!”

Just then, a familiar voice cut in.

“That’s enough.”

My breath caught.

It was Audrey.

“Audrey…” Ryan sounded as if he had finally found someone on his side, his voice thick with tears. “I really didn’t mean for this to happen…”

Audrey soothed him softly, “Don’t worry. I’ll take care of it.”

Evan let out a humorless laugh.

“Take care of it? How exactly do you plan to do that? He almost killed him!”

Audrey’s tone grew firm.

“Mr. Ludlow is one of the finest nurses in this hospital. He has never once made a serious mistake. He monitored the patient according to standard protocol, and there’s no evidence of his negligence. I trust his professional judgment.”

Evan’s voice cracked with disbelief.

“Audrey, do you even know who is lying in that room?”

Audrey fell silent for a moment before replying, her voice as calm as ever.

“You’re Luke’s friend, but I won’t show favoritism just because you know the patient.”

She thought Evan was standing up for someone in his own family.

Evan drew ragged breaths and was too angry to speak.

Audrey had already walked away with Ryan, standing firmly by his side. Their footsteps gradually faded into the distance.

Then, I heard another round of whispers.

“Dr. Levingston is so protective of Mr. Ludlow. She had his back the entire time.”

“If I were Mr. Ludlow, I’d marry her in a heartbeat.”

“They really are perfect together. They are the best doctor and the best nurse in the hospital. I’m so envious.”

Every word felt like another nail driven into my chest.

The hospital room door opened, and Evan entered with red-rimmed eyes.

The moment he saw I was awake, he rushed over and covered my ears.

“Don’t listen. It’s all nonsense.”

I pulled his hand away and managed a faint smile.

“It’s fine.”

After coming so close to death, what else could I possibly be unable to let go of?

As soon as I finished speaking, my phone rang.

The caller ID showed Audrey’s name.

Evan’s expression darkened.

“She still has the nerve to call?”

I calmly picked up.

Audrey’s displeased voice came through the phone.

“Luke, where did you go?”

I looked at Audrey, my voice calm and steady.“From the day Dad died, we were never meant to have a future together.”Audrey remained rooted to the spot. After a long while, she suddenly laughed. It was bitter and full of defeat, like a gambler who had finally lost everything.“I understand.” She nodded, her voice hoarse.“Luke, I won’t bother you anymore.”With that, she turned and left. Her pace was slow, but she never looked back.I stayed where I was, watching her figure gradually disappear into the glow at the end of the corridor.I felt neither relief nor sadness, only a quiet, almost imperceptible sense of peace, like a book that had finally reached its final page.Five years later, Evan and I sat by the Selvara River in Piremont, Faronne, having drinks together. The years had sharpened him into an accomplished professional. He had become one of the most renowned lawyers in the industry, carrying an air of precision, confidence, and decisiveness in everything he did

Mom eventually pulled through. With the international team of specialists revising her treatment plan, she was successfully moved out of the ICU a week later. The day I received the news, I sat on the bench outside her room and cried for a long time, my face buried in my hands. All the fear, anxiety, and helplessness I had been carrying over these past few days finally found an outlet.“Luke.”Melanie handed me a tissue and crouched down in front of me, looking unusually flustered.“Your mom’s fine now. Why are you still crying?”I took the tissue and wiped my eyes, though they were still red.“Thank you, Melanie. You’re truly a kind person.”Without her, I honestly did not know how I would have made it through those days.Melanie scratched her head awkwardly and looked away.“Actually, I didn’t do all this just because I’m kind.”I stared at her, confused. She met my eyes, her expression serious, open, and completely sincere.“I did it because I like you.”I froze, unab

I called the police, and Ryan was taken away. The consequences awaiting him went far beyond losing his job.He would have to answer for deliberately provoking a post-surgery patient and causing her condition to worsen, along with the investigation into the previous postoperative bleeding incident. But I no longer had the time or the desire to care about what happened to him.Mom’s condition had suddenly taken a turn for the worse.Outside the ICU, the doctors handed me critical condition notices again and again.I went two full days without sleep, standing outside the glass and watching Mom lie there with tubes running through her body.Every change in the numbers on the monitor felt like a dull blade carving away at my nerves, bit by bit.Audrey stayed at the hospital the entire time as well. She slept even less than I did, dark circles forming beneath her eyes. But when I looked at her, I felt no gratitude whatsoever, only a deep, lingering disgust that I could not shake.I

“The surgery was a success. Her condition shouldn’t have deteriorated so suddenly.”The doctor looked genuinely perplexed.“Unless… something caused her severe emotional distress.”My heart sank.“Emotional distress?”He nodded.“After surgery, patients need to avoid intense emotional stress, especially when their heart and blood pressure are still unstable. Think carefully. Did anything out of the ordinary happen today?”Out of the ordinary?Mom had only just come out of surgery. Aside from the medical staff and a few family members, no one had been in contact with her. Then, it hit me.I looked up abruptly.“Check the security cameras.”Half an hour later, we were in the surveillance room reviewing the footage. The corridor outside Mom’s room bustled with activity. Nurses moved in and out carrying trays. Then, at 3:20 p.m., a figure appeared on the screen. It was Ryan.My breath caught, and I instinctively looked at Audrey. She stood just behind me. The glow from the

After that call, I rushed back to my hometown overnight. At the hospital, Mom was still receiving emergency treatment. The doctor stood in the corridor, his expression grave.“The patient is in critical condition and requires immediate surgery. Unfortunately, this hospital doesn’t have the necessary facilities. We recommend transferring her to another hospital as soon as possible.”My blood ran cold.It was as if I had been thrown back three years.Back then, another doctor had told me the same thing as Dad lay in his hospital bed.I lost Dad then. Was I going to lose Mom too?I swayed where I stood, on the verge of collapsing.Just then, Audrey arrived.“I’ll do it.”Everyone froze.Recognition flashed across the doctor’s face.“You’re… Dr. Audrey Levingston?”Audrey gave a brief nod.“Let me see her chart.”Within minutes, she had made her assessment.“The surgery can be done. Prepare everything immediately. I’ll perform it myself.”The surgery lasted a full eight ho

Over the next few days, Audrey followed me everywhere I went.We stayed at the same hotels, visited the same attractions, and even ate at the same restaurants.I knew the best way to deal with her was to ignore her, so I did just that. I focused on enjoying the scenery, taking my photos, and treating her as if she were invisible. But eventually, Melanie could not stand it anymore.“Miss Ex.” She dropped her spoon onto the table in the restaurant. “Do you have a stalking problem?”Audrey did not even look up. She calmly picked up a chicken wing and reached across the table to place it on my plate. The gesture was as natural as it had always been, as if our marriage had never ended.“I’m here spending time with my husband,” Audrey said. “How does that count as stalking?”Melanie smiled sweetly, but there was no trace of amusement in her eyes.“Let me correct you again. He’s your ex-husband, not your husband.”The tension in the air was thick enough to cut.I rubbed my temple
