Chapter 5

Author: Summer Forest
The surgery was scheduled for the next morning, so I went home.

The flowers on the balcony looked especially beautiful in the evening light.

There were gardenias, roses, succulents, and hydrangeas. I had nurtured every single one of them over the years.

Audrey was always too busy to spend time with me, so I found solace in caring for my plants.

Once I left, no one would be left to tend to them. It would be a shame to let them wither.

I snapped a picture and posted it to the neighborhood group.

The caption read: I’m moving. Free plants. First come, first served.

My neighbors were more than happy to help. Within half an hour, most of the balcony was cleared.

After giving away the last pot of hydrangeas, I stood alone on the empty balcony.

Somehow, letting go was easier than I had imagined.

I turned and went into the walk-in closet.

Inside the glass cabinet were rows of watches, most of them gifts from Audrey.

I used to be overjoyed whenever she gave me one.

As I looked at them again, I could only think of the indifference on her face whenever she gave them to me, and how she had even gifted me the same style twice. It was almost laughable.

The Audrey I loved had only ever existed in my imagination.

Once the illusion shattered, I realized it had never been worth all I had given.

I photographed the watches and listed them on a resale platform.

Seven or eight of them sold in a single night.

The once-full cabinet was suddenly half empty, just like my heart.

At 10 p.m., I heard the sound of the lock turning at the door.

Audrey was back.

Her forehead was scraped, her face was bruised, and her right arm was wrapped in a thick bandage.

Ryan was helping her inside.

His eyes were red, like he had just been crying.

“Luke, the patient’s family caused a scene today. Audrey got hurt because she stepped in to protect me. Please take good care of her.”

I glanced at him and said calmly, “Stay and look after her yourself if you’re so worried.”

Ryan’s face immediately flushed.

He stammered, “Luke, that’s not what I meant… Audrey and I are just coworkers…”

Audrey’s expression immediately darkened.

“Luke, would you stop taking jabs at him?”

“What did I say?” I asked, confused.

“Ryan kindly brought me home. Why are you being sarcastic?”

She slammed the car keys onto the table, disappointment filling her eyes as she looked at me.

Ryan quickly forced a smile, though his eyes grew red with tears again.

“Audrey, don’t blame Luke. It’s all my fault. I shouldn’t have brought you home. I’ll leave now.”

With that, he turned and ran out.

Audrey did not hesitate for even a second before chasing after him.

The front door slammed shut behind her.

An hour later, she returned, her expression even darker than before.

She did not notice anything different about me, much less the empty balcony or the half-empty watch cabinet.

She only had one question.

“Are you happy now?”

I did not bother looking up.

“Happy about what?”

“Ryan cried the whole way home. He hasn’t done anything wrong. Why do you keep picking on him?”

I kept packing my things.

I had long since gotten used to it.

In her eyes, Ryan was always the victim, and I was the villain.

I packed away the last watch, then got to my feet. Arguing felt pointless, so I headed for the bedroom.

“Stop.”

Audrey’s voice turned cold.

“You didn’t make dinner again?”

I stopped in my tracks.

“There are ravioli and pasta in the fridge. If you really can’t manage, order takeout.”

Audrey lifted her bandaged arm, her expression hardening.

“I’m injured.”

I turned back to her with the faintest smile.

“You didn’t get hurt because of me. Why should I be the one repaying someone else’s favor?”

Audrey’s face turned livid. After a long silence, she gave a cold laugh.

“Fine. Luke, you’ve really outdone yourself.”

She marched into the study and slammed the door hard enough to rattle the walls.

I did not so much as glance up.

My surgery was the next day, so I had no interest in arguing with her.

I fell asleep almost as soon as I got into bed.

It was the soundest sleep I had had since deciding to get divorced.

Early the next morning, Evan came to pick me up.

“Are you really sure about this? You’re not staying childfree anymore?”

I looked down at my empty wrist. After a brief silence, I nodded.

“I’m sure.”

Back then, my entire world had revolved around Audrey.

I had been willing to give up my career for her, and even my chances to have children.

But in the end, none of it was worth it.

So, I was going to live a different life.

After the paperwork was completed, I was wheeled into the operating room.

The surgeon was verifying my information, and the anesthesiologist was standing by.

Just then, a familiar figure walked in.

The instant our eyes met, a chill ran down my spine.

It was Ryan.

He stood beside the surgeon, dressed in sterile surgical attire with a mask covering his face.

When he noticed me looking at him, he did not seem surprised at all. Instead, a clear trace of amusement flickered in his eyes.

I looked at Audrey, my voice calm and steady.“From the day Dad died, we were never meant to have a future together.”Audrey remained rooted to the spot. After a long while, she suddenly laughed. It was bitter and full of defeat, like a gambler who had finally lost everything.“I understand.” She nodded, her voice hoarse.“Luke, I won’t bother you anymore.”With that, she turned and left. Her pace was slow, but she never looked back.I stayed where I was, watching her figure gradually disappear into the glow at the end of the corridor.I felt neither relief nor sadness, only a quiet, almost imperceptible sense of peace, like a book that had finally reached its final page.Five years later, Evan and I sat by the Selvara River in Piremont, Faronne, having drinks together. The years had sharpened him into an accomplished professional. He had become one of the most renowned lawyers in the industry, carrying an air of precision, confidence, and decisiveness in everything he did

Mom eventually pulled through. With the international team of specialists revising her treatment plan, she was successfully moved out of the ICU a week later. The day I received the news, I sat on the bench outside her room and cried for a long time, my face buried in my hands. All the fear, anxiety, and helplessness I had been carrying over these past few days finally found an outlet.“Luke.”Melanie handed me a tissue and crouched down in front of me, looking unusually flustered.“Your mom’s fine now. Why are you still crying?”I took the tissue and wiped my eyes, though they were still red.“Thank you, Melanie. You’re truly a kind person.”Without her, I honestly did not know how I would have made it through those days.Melanie scratched her head awkwardly and looked away.“Actually, I didn’t do all this just because I’m kind.”I stared at her, confused. She met my eyes, her expression serious, open, and completely sincere.“I did it because I like you.”I froze, unab

I called the police, and Ryan was taken away. The consequences awaiting him went far beyond losing his job.He would have to answer for deliberately provoking a post-surgery patient and causing her condition to worsen, along with the investigation into the previous postoperative bleeding incident. But I no longer had the time or the desire to care about what happened to him.Mom’s condition had suddenly taken a turn for the worse.Outside the ICU, the doctors handed me critical condition notices again and again.I went two full days without sleep, standing outside the glass and watching Mom lie there with tubes running through her body.Every change in the numbers on the monitor felt like a dull blade carving away at my nerves, bit by bit.Audrey stayed at the hospital the entire time as well. She slept even less than I did, dark circles forming beneath her eyes. But when I looked at her, I felt no gratitude whatsoever, only a deep, lingering disgust that I could not shake.I

“The surgery was a success. Her condition shouldn’t have deteriorated so suddenly.”The doctor looked genuinely perplexed.“Unless… something caused her severe emotional distress.”My heart sank.“Emotional distress?”He nodded.“After surgery, patients need to avoid intense emotional stress, especially when their heart and blood pressure are still unstable. Think carefully. Did anything out of the ordinary happen today?”Out of the ordinary?Mom had only just come out of surgery. Aside from the medical staff and a few family members, no one had been in contact with her. Then, it hit me.I looked up abruptly.“Check the security cameras.”Half an hour later, we were in the surveillance room reviewing the footage. The corridor outside Mom’s room bustled with activity. Nurses moved in and out carrying trays. Then, at 3:20 p.m., a figure appeared on the screen. It was Ryan.My breath caught, and I instinctively looked at Audrey. She stood just behind me. After that call, I rushed back to my hometown overnight. At the hospital, Mom was still receiving emergency treatment. The doctor stood in the corridor, his expression grave.“The patient is in critical condition and requires immediate surgery. Unfortunately, this hospital doesn’t have the necessary facilities. We recommend transferring her to another hospital as soon as possible.”My blood ran cold.It was as if I had been thrown back three years.Back then, another doctor had told me the same thing as Dad lay in his hospital bed.I lost Dad then. Was I going to lose Mom too?I swayed where I stood, on the verge of collapsing.Just then, Audrey arrived.“I’ll do it.”Everyone froze.Recognition flashed across the doctor’s face.“You’re… Dr. Audrey Levingston?”Audrey gave a brief nod.“Let me see her chart.”Within minutes, she had made her assessment.“The surgery can be done. Prepare everything immediately. I’ll perform it myself.”The surgery lasted a full eight ho

Over the next few days, Audrey followed me everywhere I went.We stayed at the same hotels, visited the same attractions, and even ate at the same restaurants.I knew the best way to deal with her was to ignore her, so I did just that. I focused on enjoying the scenery, taking my photos, and treating her as if she were invisible. But eventually, Melanie could not stand it anymore.“Miss Ex.” She dropped her spoon onto the table in the restaurant. “Do you have a stalking problem?”Audrey did not even look up. She calmly picked up a chicken wing and reached across the table to place it on my plate. The gesture was as natural as it had always been, as if our marriage had never ended.“I’m here spending time with my husband,” Audrey said. “How does that count as stalking?”Melanie smiled sweetly, but there was no trace of amusement in her eyes.“Let me correct you again. He’s your ex-husband, not your husband.”The tension in the air was thick enough to cut.I rubbed my temple
