Chapter 7

Author: Summer Forest
“Where would I go?” I asked calmly.

“The gas company came by for an inspection today,” Audrey said coldly. “No one answered the door, so they called me. Why weren’t you home?”

So, that was it.

I thought she had finally noticed something wrong with me.

I let out a quiet laugh and mocked myself for still having such unrealistic expectations.

“Why must I be home?” I asked. “Am I not allowed to go out? Am I not allowed to have a life of my own? Can’t I even take a trip?”

Audrey’s tone grew heavier.

“Luke, what’s gotten into you lately? You stopped cooking, you barely come home, and you keep giving me attitude. Now, you’ve even run off traveling alone. Have you lost your mind?”

I looked out at the evening sky, my voice barely a whisper.

“I haven’t. I just finally saw things clearly.”

The other end of the line went silent.

After a long pause, Audrey let out a cold laugh.

“Fine. Keep this up. Since you’re not coming home, I won’t either. Let’s see who can hold out longer.”

With that, the call ended.

Evan nearly flung his own phone.

“What’s wrong with her? She runs a whole department. All she had to do was ask around to find out you were admitted. She doesn’t care about you at all!”

His eyes grew misty as he spoke. He reached out and hugged me.

“Luke, if you need to cry, let it all out. Don’t keep it bottled up.”

I rested my head on his shoulder and stayed silent for a long time before slowly shaking my head.

“I can’t bring myself to cry anymore.”

A man’s tears were not shed lightly. To cry over someone undeserving would be beneath me.

Three days later, I had mostly recovered and was discharged. I went home to collect my things.

When I opened the door, I stopped short.

Audrey was home.

Our eyes met, and the air between us went still for a few seconds.

She broke the silence first.

“You’re back. Where have you been?”

I ignored the question and went straight to the bedroom, opening the cabinet to check for my documents.

Behind me, her voice sounded again.

“Haven’t you always wanted to drive the Silver Peak Highway? Now that the house is settled, we should probably get a new car too. Let’s go and look at cars tomorrow. When I’m off next time, I’ll go with you.”

I paused.

Once, hearing those words would have kept me awake all night with happiness.

But they had come too late.

“No need.”

Audrey frowned.

“Why?”

She had no idea that I had already bought the new car, and that the road ahead of me no longer reserved a place for her.

“No particular reason,” I replied.

When Audrey realized I would not budge, her patience finally wore thin.

“Ryan kept telling me to be nicer to you, and this is how you treat me?”

I let out a sarcastic chuckle.

“So, you do whatever he says? If he told you to jump off a cliff, would you do that too?”

Audrey’s face turned livid.

“Luke, why are you talking like this now?”

I kept my head down and continued organizing my documents, not sparing her a glance.

Audrey stood there, breathing heavily. After a long pause, she gave a cold scoff.

“Fine. Looks like we both need time to cool off. I’ll stay at the hospital for the next couple of days. Take some time to reflect on yourself.”

She grabbed her coat and left, slamming the door behind her.

I never once looked up.

It was not until the door closed again that I slowly walked over to the bedside.

I pulled three documents out of my bag.

The first was the signed divorce agreement, the second was my vasectomy consent form, and the third was the record of my reversal surgery from a few days ago.

I placed them neatly on the bedside table, then picked up my luggage and left.

Every corner of this house was filled with Audrey’s presence. I could not stay there for another moment.

I spent my last night in Avelhurst at a hotel.

Early the next morning, I went to the dealership.

The sales consultant greeted me with a warm smile.

“Mr. Gatlin, your car is ready.”

Just as I was about to sign the paperwork, I heard a familiar voice.

“What do you think of this one?”

I turned to see Audrey standing nearby, beside an SUV.

Ryan stood next to her, studying the features with his head lowered.

Whatever he said made them both burst out laughing.

They were perfectly in sync, like a couple who had been together for years.

The sales consultant beamed.

“You two have great taste. This model is perfect for couples who enjoy road trips. Many young married couples choose it. Why don’t you take it for a test drive?”

Audrey did not attempt to correct the misunderstanding. She simply got into the driver’s seat.

Ryan’s cheeks flushed, but he still silently slid into the passenger seat beside her.

Moments later, they drove off in the test-drive vehicle.

The salespeople started whispering among themselves.

“Those two really make a gorgeous couple.”

“I heard they graduated from the same school, and now they even work at the same hospital. It’s like their campus romance became a reality!”

“A strong, capable woman with a sweet, supportive guy. I’m obsessed with this pairing!”

I listened quietly, surprised by how little it bothered me.

“Mr. Gatlin?”

The sales manager’s gentle voice pulled me back from my thoughts.

Without hesitation, I signed the paperwork.

After swiping my card and taking the keys, I walked over to my new car.

I started the engine, shifted into gear, and drove away.

In the rearview mirror, Audrey’s SUV headed off in the opposite direction.

I did not look back.

Ahead of me lay a brand-new life.

After five years, I was finally myself again.

I looked at Audrey, my voice calm and steady.“From the day Dad died, we were never meant to have a future together.”Audrey remained rooted to the spot. After a long while, she suddenly laughed. It was bitter and full of defeat, like a gambler who had finally lost everything.“I understand.” She nodded, her voice hoarse.“Luke, I won’t bother you anymore.”With that, she turned and left. Her pace was slow, but she never looked back.I stayed where I was, watching her figure gradually disappear into the glow at the end of the corridor.I felt neither relief nor sadness, only a quiet, almost imperceptible sense of peace, like a book that had finally reached its final page.Five years later, Evan and I sat by the Selvara River in Piremont, Faronne, having drinks together. The years had sharpened him into an accomplished professional. He had become one of the most renowned lawyers in the industry, carrying an air of precision, confidence, and decisiveness in everything he did

Mom eventually pulled through. With the international team of specialists revising her treatment plan, she was successfully moved out of the ICU a week later. The day I received the news, I sat on the bench outside her room and cried for a long time, my face buried in my hands. All the fear, anxiety, and helplessness I had been carrying over these past few days finally found an outlet.“Luke.”Melanie handed me a tissue and crouched down in front of me, looking unusually flustered.“Your mom’s fine now. Why are you still crying?”I took the tissue and wiped my eyes, though they were still red.“Thank you, Melanie. You’re truly a kind person.”Without her, I honestly did not know how I would have made it through those days.Melanie scratched her head awkwardly and looked away.“Actually, I didn’t do all this just because I’m kind.”I stared at her, confused. She met my eyes, her expression serious, open, and completely sincere.“I did it because I like you.”I froze, unab

I called the police, and Ryan was taken away. The consequences awaiting him went far beyond losing his job.He would have to answer for deliberately provoking a post-surgery patient and causing her condition to worsen, along with the investigation into the previous postoperative bleeding incident. But I no longer had the time or the desire to care about what happened to him.Mom’s condition had suddenly taken a turn for the worse.Outside the ICU, the doctors handed me critical condition notices again and again.I went two full days without sleep, standing outside the glass and watching Mom lie there with tubes running through her body.Every change in the numbers on the monitor felt like a dull blade carving away at my nerves, bit by bit.Audrey stayed at the hospital the entire time as well. She slept even less than I did, dark circles forming beneath her eyes. But when I looked at her, I felt no gratitude whatsoever, only a deep, lingering disgust that I could not shake.I

“The surgery was a success. Her condition shouldn’t have deteriorated so suddenly.”The doctor looked genuinely perplexed.“Unless… something caused her severe emotional distress.”My heart sank.“Emotional distress?”He nodded.“After surgery, patients need to avoid intense emotional stress, especially when their heart and blood pressure are still unstable. Think carefully. Did anything out of the ordinary happen today?”Out of the ordinary?Mom had only just come out of surgery. Aside from the medical staff and a few family members, no one had been in contact with her. Then, it hit me.I looked up abruptly.“Check the security cameras.”Half an hour later, we were in the surveillance room reviewing the footage. The corridor outside Mom’s room bustled with activity. Nurses moved in and out carrying trays. Then, at 3:20 p.m., a figure appeared on the screen. It was Ryan.My breath caught, and I instinctively looked at Audrey. She stood just behind me. After that call, I rushed back to my hometown overnight. At the hospital, Mom was still receiving emergency treatment. The doctor stood in the corridor, his expression grave.“The patient is in critical condition and requires immediate surgery. Unfortunately, this hospital doesn’t have the necessary facilities. We recommend transferring her to another hospital as soon as possible.”My blood ran cold.It was as if I had been thrown back three years.Back then, another doctor had told me the same thing as Dad lay in his hospital bed.I lost Dad then. Was I going to lose Mom too?I swayed where I stood, on the verge of collapsing.Just then, Audrey arrived.“I’ll do it.”Everyone froze.Recognition flashed across the doctor’s face.“You’re… Dr. Audrey Levingston?”Audrey gave a brief nod.“Let me see her chart.”Within minutes, she had made her assessment.“The surgery can be done. Prepare everything immediately. I’ll perform it myself.”The surgery lasted a full eight ho

Over the next few days, Audrey followed me everywhere I went.We stayed at the same hotels, visited the same attractions, and even ate at the same restaurants.I knew the best way to deal with her was to ignore her, so I did just that. I focused on enjoying the scenery, taking my photos, and treating her as if she were invisible. But eventually, Melanie could not stand it anymore.“Miss Ex.” She dropped her spoon onto the table in the restaurant. “Do you have a stalking problem?”Audrey did not even look up. She calmly picked up a chicken wing and reached across the table to place it on my plate. The gesture was as natural as it had always been, as if our marriage had never ended.“I’m here spending time with my husband,” Audrey said. “How does that count as stalking?”Melanie smiled sweetly, but there was no trace of amusement in her eyes.“Let me correct you again. He’s your ex-husband, not your husband.”The tension in the air was thick enough to cut.I rubbed my temple
