The memory faded into another one, faster this time, showing a high tower with gigantic bird cages suspended from the ceiling through thick chains. Inside of the one in the highest part was Edeline herself. Guards in masks were slowly lowering her, later on assisting her to a grand courtroom with the woman in the gold mask.
And that woman turned out to be no other than the banished queen Aldonra.
"Your highness." Edeline bowed. "It is my pleasure to serve you and your kingdom. I will do my best to find the cure of the plague for your people."
It seemed that she had done exactly that, Kat deduced, as the next scenes showed the budding friendship between the queen and Edeline. Edeline was no longer thrown back into her cage. She was serving Aldonra even in what seemed to be her private quarters. They would dine together, face subjects together, and at one point rest in one room together.
Kat began to notice that Aldonra's face lit up around Edeline, t
"Constant death or an endless life, Kat," Edeline said. "It's your choice to make."Kat looked at her mother and realized just how mad this woman was. Yet under that madness she saw sense, and that rendered her weak. She glanced at Calix's face, his outstretched hand reaching for her. Thisbe and Amicus, who were basically strangers, but still didn't hesitate to protect her. The medallion was heavy on her neck, a reminder to herself and her mother, a calling for a decision. But how could she decide when everything she thought she knew was a lie? Everything that defined her turned out to be stories fabricated by Edeline so she could serve a purpose. It made her want tk throw the truth all away and rewrite her own reality. She just wanted to be anything but herself. Because who was she, reallly? But that didn't mean she was fated to follow every single path set upon her, right? That didn't mean she didn't have a choiceKat looked at the bottles, containing t
There were about a dozen guards, running across the black lake, which turned out to be watery and not viscous, splashing around like extra-runny mud. And it was just as chunky as mud too, it turned out. Solid bits of random shapes rose as their footsteps thundered.Kat dreaded to know what those bits were, but what she dreaded more were the ones running towards them at top speed.Calix, Thisbe, and Amicus didn't have such fears, though. Despite having come from a different battle just earlier and being heavily outnumbered, they poised their weapons and closed in for an attack. She stayed back, not because she didn't want to fight, but because she was paralyzed by the chaos going on above her. The Hellborns were much more fearsome, yes, but the sheer aggression of the human souls bothered her in ways she couldn't describe. They were spindly but surprisingly quick, agile enough to jump to the lower cages and hang on the chains as they cackled and jeered, their words incoherent and incomp
"No." Kat's voice reverberated on the stone walls. She held Calix's head on her lap, with sobs racking up her body. "Calix, you can't. . . ."She trailed off, unable to speak anymore. Amicus watched her, biting his lip. "Kat, listen—""I can't lose him." She buried her face at the crook of his neck. "I just can't. Surely there must be something—""There is," he interrupted. Surprisingly, his voice was calm, assuring. His eyes were even twinkling with amusement. When she opened her mouth to question it, he stopped her by raising a hand. "Kat, Calix is not dead. Badly injured like Thisbe, but not dead."His words slowly sank into Kat's consciousness. She blinked. "What?""They are safe, Kat." He began to reach under his cloak, whipping out all sorts of glass jars and vials, all containing concoctions with varying consistency and color. A few have gunky textures. Most were clear liquids, some thick and some runny. He also had a few dried leaves, which he began to crush under cloth. "I am
Mother? Father? Kat could hardly believe her ears. What she believed, however, were her eyes. The family resemblance was littered all over Calix and the elderly couple. For a long while, no one spoke. Even the brothers in the corner. The silence in the room got so awkward that Kat felt like laughing hysterically just to break the tension. She didn't do that, though. She couldn't even move, especially when Calix's father found her with his cold gaze."I did not expect this too, Calix," he said, and Kat got the feeling that she was the one he wasn't expecting. "To be frank, I did not expect to see you back here so soon."Calix straightened up from his bow, and so did Thisbe. He faced his father squarely. "Me neither, nor did I want to go back, but I have to help someone important to me."He put a hand on the small of Kat's back, which made her even more hesitant to move. Was this supposed to be the 'meet the family' part of their dating life? If so, then they would fall under rank one of
As it turned out, the only way to enter the palace was the sewer lines. These were located at the back end of the landscape, right behind the forest line around the gardens.Calix and his parents found their way just fine, and with zero problems. The northern neighborhoods seemed abandoned, with all the windows shut and doors locked. Odion's ability to manipulate force had allowed him to put a shield on all of them, and Gethen extended her glamour on them too.The journey was more than surprisingly fine, but the destination was quite horrid. The entrance of the sewers alone was not pleasant. Grime covered the walls, and the metal lid of the gigantic pipes were rusted and covered in what looked like black slime. Calix couldn't quite imagine himself charging into battle through these paths."Is this really our point of entry?" He winced at the middle pipe that Odion had just opened. "Maybe there is another way in.""No, son." Gethen crinkled her nose and beckoned him forward. "This was o
Being in the Underworld had been nothing but bad, but at least Kat got to see the cute dogs.Okay, there were not really dogs. They were called shadow wolves. Their furs were purely black, as dark as . . . well, as shadows. Also, they were only cute because they behaved well and rather intelligently, not because they looked like normal dogs. For starters, they were the size of a small bus, with fanged mouths that could swallow an adult. They also had three eyes, one positioned at the forehead and all of them glowing red like a stop sign."Do not pet it," Amicus warned sternly as his shadow wolf named Nyx, sniffed her hand. "You do not want her to lick you
Calix froze at the sight of Idris and his small army. Not because he was particularly scared of them, but because Idris pointed at him and put him under some sort of a paralyzing spell.Shock, disbelief, and anger fueled him up, but all the energy that those emotions ignited all fell flat when he realized he couldn't move. He fought to stay upright, his weapon still in his hand as his arms got pinned to his sides. His breathing was restricted because of the stiffness in his chest. However, even with all this, he looked Idris straight in the face fearlessly.
"Demons," Amicus muttered, reining in Nyx as she continued to howl and fidget in her leash.Apart from the wolf and Amicus, everyone else was frozen, even the Demons. They looked at the four with their unblinking human-like eyes, standing in their path like they were meant to stay there all along. And perhaps they were. It was most probable that they had been assigned to guard the paths leading to Sygnus. They were just obstacles to be dealt with, but that didn't make their presence any less bothersome, especially for Kat, who had never seen these creatures before. But that wasn't entirely true, wasn't it? She had seen Demons before. Or at least a part of them. She'd seen their hands taking the souls at the gates for evil mortals. She'd heard them make noises, felt their presence at the other side every time she and Calix went to such missions. However, nothing could have prepared her for the sheer physical and emotional torture that they brought upon her.Kat knew perfectly that the f
