Chapter 1 Cunning

Penulis: Little Rookie
The moment I signed the papers, a gleam of triumph shone in my fiancee, Yvonne Quinton's eyes. But when I looked at her, she put on a mask that told me she too felt conflicted.

"I'll get the best lawyers for you, Shawn. Even when you're in prison, I'll do my best to get you an early release."

I held down my sardonic smile. Coolly, I said, "Spare me."

She pretended to worry. "Shawn, I know you don't like this, but you can't just give up. Your parents…"

She wouldn't stop talking about how she was worried about me. I'd have believed her, but my previous life told me she was a snake.

When I refused to sign the papers in my previous life, she turned on me. She forged evidence that would slam me in prison. She bought out some inmates, and they took away my right to be a father.

I had nothing but hatred for her. She told Christopher Welson to steal Leidermann Group's secrets, but I had to take the fall. Me, an innocent person.

"Shawn?" Her voice pulled me back to reality. "You don't look so good. What's wrong?"

I balled my fists, and my nails clawed into my flesh. "It's nothing." I forced a smile. "Prison scares me, that's all."

She tried to hold my hand, but I moved away quietly. That surprised her a little, but the delight of getting my confession papers overwhelmed her. She carefully tucked them away into her suitcase.

"I'll hand these over to the judge when the session opens in three days." She promised, "I'll make sure no one knows about this."

I nodded coolly. Then, I was bailed and awaited my trial.

When I left the court, she opened the car door for me and held her hand against my forehead, just like the way I did for her for the last three years.

Alas, nothing was the same anymore. Even so, she still acted the part of a caring lover. The look she gave me was nothing short of tender.

"I'll take you home, Shawn."

'Home?' I sneered quietly. The villa that was supposed to be the chest that stored our memories had no place for me. I knew that much.

And my instincts were true. The first thing that hit me when I got home was the scent of another man's cologne.

Everything inside was changed. I was a minimalist, but the decor was nothing short of loud and gaudy.

The wedding portrait that was supposed to be in the center of the living room was shoved into the storeroom like some sort of miscellaneous item. Dust was its blanket now.

She noticed me staring at the portrait. A hint of awkwardness flickered on her face, but she composed herself right away. "It's all Christopher's idea, Shawn."

My wounds were healing up, but Rachel refused to let me leave the house. "Yvonne might have been arrested, but her family's still out there. I can't risk anything." She was holding my wrist, gently rubbing the marks on my wrists. The marks left by a rope. Darkness flashed in her eyes.I shook my head. "You can't keep me cooped up forever."She bowed her head and nibbled on my ear. In a syrupy tone, she said, "If I had my way, I would. No one's seeing you but me."Oh, she was being possessive all of a sudden. My heart started to race. I teased, "That's illegal imprisonment, Ms. Leidermann."She chuckled and crossed her fingers through my hair. Rachel held the back of my head and kissed me. "Sue me, then."It was a deep, hard kiss. I thought we were going to gobble each other up.She lost her strength and fell into my embrace. I brushed my thumb against her lips. As she gazed at me, she responded, "But they'll say I'm not guilty, I think.""Why?""Because…" She leaned closer to m

Christopher grabbed the candelabra standing around the porch and swung it at Yvonne. "It's your fault! It's your fault I'm in this mess! I'm done for!"Yvonne failed to get away in time. The candelabra grazed her forehead, and blood spilled. "Have you lost it?" She wiped her blood away and pounced at him like a leopard. She pressed the knife to his throat."Let me go…" Christopher clawed her face until crimson marks appeared. "You told me… to act ill… so he'd take the fall…"A wave of chill captured my body. So, these demons were already setting me up for years."Well, isn't this a show?"Rachel's voice swam in from the entrance. She leaned on the door and played with a voice recorder. "I believe this recording will work even better than any footage."She approached me and hugged me. Darkly, she looked at Yvonne. Yvonne let go of Christopher immediately. He coughed violently."This is a misunderstanding, Ms. Leidermann."Then, Yvonne tried to run away, but a pair of bodyguard

"I know I was deceived by the Devil." Tears fell down her cheeks and she bowed low enough for her head to hit my shoes. "But for old times' sake, please, give me a chance to redeem myself."Her tears drenched my slippers. The warmth reminded me of something. Every time she cried, she would rest her face on the back of my hand."I've lost sleep for days." Her voice had shattered. "Nightmares. A bloodied you kept asking me why. You wanted to know why I betrayed you."I turned my head away, but memories of the past kept coming up."Give me one last chance." She pulled a folding knife out of her pocket and stabbed her thigh with it before I could stop her. Blood gushed out like a pillar, but all she did was smile sadly. "This is for the first lash."She raised her hand and pointed it at her other leg. "I will pay for all ninety-nine lashes."My pupils shrank, and I pulled the chain down. Then, I grabbed her wrist. The stench of blood was making my head spin. My heart was torn in half

She returned my hug, yet she held me so tightly, I nearly suffocated. "I won't let anyone hurt you this time, Shawn."…I thought things were over once Yvonne and Christopher were taken into custody, but three days later, the Quintons spent a fortune to bail Yvonne out.I was reading a book on Rachel's balcony that evening, and someone rang the doorbell. Through the cameras, I realized it was Yvonne. She was holding a bouquet of roses out there. The gentle smile I knew hung from her lips. She was acting like all her curses did not happen. I sneered and pressed the intercom button. "Scram."Yvonne's smile froze, but she composed herself right away. Gently, genuinely, she requested, "I know you hate me, Shaw, but just give me five minutes. Just five. There's something I must tell you face to face."I wanted to turn off the intercom, but then I thought, 'Why should she get to live happily?'I approached the door leisurely and opened it up, but I did not take off the security chain.

She turned to the judge. Solemnly, she requested, "Given the violent tendency the defendant has shown to us, I request a restraining order to keep them away from my fiance."The judge nodded. The cops dragged the two of them out of the room. The session was over, and Rachel drove me home herself. No, not the villa where I went through hell. It was an expensive condominium she had in the city center. I'd suffered too many wounds, and blood had drenched my shirt again after the court trial.Rachel was worried, and she panicked. She carefully took me to the couch and handled me like I was some fragile vase. "The doctor will be here immediately."I noticed the frown on her forehead, and I smoothed it out. "It's okay. 'Tis nothing but flesh wounds."Rachel held my hand. Hoarsely, she said, "I should've found you sooner.""You weren't late, you know." I rested my head on her shoulder. "At least we didn't miss each other this time."…In my previous life, I went through hell after the

That sent ripples coursing through the whole courtroom. The reporters' cameras kept flashing. Yvonne shot up from her seat, her expression dark. "What are you doing, Ms. Leidermann?"Rachel did not even give her a moment of her time. She came over to me and knelt on one knee. Carefully, she unraveled the ropes around my hand. With a voice softer than clouds, she said, "I'm sorry I couldn't come sooner."Weakly, I raised my head and met her eyes. There was worry etched within them. In my previous life, she was the one who marched right into the prison to save me, and yet we both died in a sea of fire that engulfed the place."Rachel…" I said her name with my cracked voice. The moment I found out that she, like me, was reborn, I could no longer hold back my tears. She gently wiped my tears away. I was like the most valuable treasure to her. "It's alright, Shawn. I'll keep you safe."She turned to the medical staff. "Tend to Mr. Pearson's wounds immediately!"The medical staff huddl
