Chapter One
I was already in the wedding hall at the town hall, where my fiancé David and I were supposed to get married. An hour passed, but David still hadn’t arrived. I looked at the clock above me several times, unable to understand what could possibly be keeping him. My fingers trembled as I dialed his number once again. He wasn’t answering, despite my numerous calls. I didn’t want to imagine the worst. David had always been punctual. He knew how much this wedding meant to me. Where had he put his phone? Where was he right now? A thousand and one thoughts raced through my mind. I tried to stay calm, even though I was already losing patience. A town hall employee was already inviting me to enter with my future husband, who was nowhere to be found, when my phone rang. I sighed in relief, ready to tell David what I thought of his behavior. I quickly answered. “David, where are you? Everyone is waiting for you…” The words he spoke next shattered my heart into a thousand pieces. “Diana… I can’t be with you anymore… I found someone else whom I truly love.” I rolled my eyes, convinced that he was joking. And I really wasn’t in the mood for jokes. “Hurry up… otherwise we’re going to be replaced,” I replied, ignoring his words. “I’m serious, Diana… I’m about to board a flight to Dubai… I’m starting a new life there with Ophelia,” he added. Without even realizing it, I left the wedding hall and found myself in the courtyard of the town hall, the phone still pressed to my ear. “What do you mean by that?” I asked in a trembling voice. Today was supposed to be the most beautiful day of our lives. I couldn’t accept that this day, the day David was supposed to arrive here at ten-thirty to take my hand and enter the wedding hall with me, was turning into a nightmare. Yet he was telling me that he was going to start a new life with another woman. “David… it’s getting late, please come,” I begged. “Diana… it seems like you don’t understand… I’m not coming,” he replied. Tears flowed uncontrollably, ruining my makeup. “I don’t love you enough to want to marry you and live with you. The one I want to marry is Ophelia,” he added. My heart sank. I had already suspected David of cheating on me, but the love I had for him was so strong that I had preferred to ignore the signs. When he had proposed to me, I had been unable to hide my joy at finally being chosen. “David… I love you so much… we can fix things… come, let’s get married… please… I’m waiting for you,” I pleaded. He hung up without warning, leaving me to sink into pain. He knew about my dream of getting married… and he had still chosen to shatter it. I didn’t even know what hurt more. The fact that he had left me… or that he had left with another woman—who was none other than my best friend. The two people I trusted the most had just betrayed me on the same day. What a fool I had been… I thought we were building a future together. I clenched my fists, furious, and called my bank advisor to have our joint account blocked. “I’m sorry, Miss Diana… he withdrew all the money.” My head began to spin. He had taken everything from me: my future, my best friend, and even my savings. I dialed his number again… but the call no longer went through. David had blocked me. I crouched down in the courtyard, indifferent to people’s stares. I felt as though my heart had just been shattered into pieces. I cried uncontrollably… when a conversation caught my attention. “Where is she? I don’t see anyone,” a man said. “Sorry, sir… I’ll contact her,” his assistant replied. “I don’t have all day… I need this woman to settle this matter once and for all,” he shouted. “I wouldn’t even be here if my grandfather hadn’t forced me to get married… otherwise, he won’t let me run the company,” he added irritably. “I thought you said she would be on time!” he shouted again. “I’m sorry, sir… I’ll try to reach her again,” his assistant said. I deduced that he had hired a woman through an agency for an arranged marriage. But she hadn’t come after receiving an advance payment. The phone rang again. “Her agency can’t reach her… she’s unreachable. We should leave and reschedule another appointment,” the assistant suggested. “I’m not leaving here without getting married,” he replied firmly. His words echoed in my mind. Getting married… Those words suddenly struck me. I had just been betrayed by the man I loved, but I refused to let this day be nothing more than a memory of humiliation. A completely crazy idea crossed my mind. I slowly raised my eyes toward the man standing in front of me. An employee approached me. “Miss Diana? It’s your turn.” My heart beat faster. I took a deep breath, then walked with determination toward the man in the suit who was still waiting. He looked up at me, surprised to see me approaching. I looked straight into his eyes and uttered the most insane words of my entire life: “Marry me.” He froze. “What?” I clenched my fists to keep my emotions from overwhelming me. “You’re here to get married, aren’t you? You need a wife. And I… my fiancé abandoned me today, on the day we were supposed to register our marriage.” His expression changed slightly, as if he hadn’t expected such a proposal. “You mean you’re ready to marry me?” I nodded. “Yes. We both need a fresh start today. You need a woman to honor your commitment to your family… and I need someone to help me turn the page.” “Then let’s get married,” he replied. His eyes remained fixed on me. I quickly went to the restroom to clean up my ruined makeup. With nothing to fix my hair, I simply wiped everything off. When I returned, he was still there… elegant in his perfectly tailored suit. My heart beat slightly faster. At least I wasn’t going to marry someone unattractive. He was incredibly handsome… with piercing eyes like an eagle’s. Even more handsome… and surely richer than David. I followed him to the mayor. The ceremony was quick. The witnesses stood behind us. “I now pronounce you husband and wife,” the mayor announced. I blinked, incredulous. I had just gotten married… to a complete stranger.Chapter ElevenWhen I met him, everything about his face showed that he was not at all happy with me.I greeted him, unable to meet his gaze.He broke the silence that filled the entire room.“What were you thinking when you accepted an interview without my permission?”I blinked as I realized that the news had already reached him.I hadn’t really thought about it. I simply wanted to make sure everything was in place before launching my business.“Well… they were the ones who called me for an interview, and you weren’t home… I decided to accept their invitation.”He shook his head.“Do you ever think? Do you know the kind of damage you could have caused if you had said something you weren’t supposed to say?”I cleared my throat, feeling a little proud of myself.“I didn’t say anything inappropriate… I was really very careful.”He didn’t seem convinced.“The problem with you is that you don’t listen.”I was beginning to get tired of this argument, and besides, it was only a simple inte
Chapter TenAs soon as Lucas left, I grabbed my phone and started scrolling through my social media. I let out a cry of surprise when I saw the messages. Most of them were congratulating me on managing to land a billionaire.Lucas Bernard, the most sought-after bachelor in the city. Some were even asking for an interview with me. I decided to seize this opportunity since I was going to launch my business soon, in order to attract clients.I replied by text to accept the interview.I continued scrolling when I saw David and Ophelia having a great time in Dubai. She was with a baby. I zoomed in to see the resemblance to David.Tears welled up in my eyes. That could have been us if only he hadn't chosen her over me.While I was here, stuck with a man who wanted nothing to do with me. A fucking marriage of convenience! He was having a great time with my best friend.I wondered how Ophelia could have betrayed me like that.I put down the phone and went into the bathroom. If I wasted time l
Chapter NineThere was no way I was going to let him touch me; he was someone I barely knew.Without thinking too much, I took a seat on the other side of the bed.I didn't blame him at all. It was David, my ex, who had led me to agree to marry a man I had barely met at the courthouse. If he had shown up that day, I wouldn't have found myself in Lucas's mansion.I was still lost in my thoughts, thinking about everything that had happened recently, when sleep finally took over.My biological clock never failed me, and at exactly five in the morning, my eyes opened wide, ready to face the day.Lucas was already awake and had gone to the bathroom to take a shower.I had taken annual leave from work because of my wedding, so I didn't have to return right away, but now I couldn't afford to stay here doing nothing.I sat on the bed, waiting for Lucas to come out of the bathroom. He came out and entered the dressing room to change.I couldn't help myself; my eyes wandered over his well-built
Chapter Eight I focused my attention on something else, trying with all my might not to think about Lucas, even though his image invaded my mind. His attitude didn’t seem like something I could tolerate in the long run.Suggesting that we be friends was a decision I knew was necessary if I wanted to survive there.Avoiding the problem wouldn’t have solved anything. At least, it allowed me to keep my mind at ease.I went to my wardrobe in search of the perfect dress to wear. I chose one that I had bought during one of my shopping trips and tried it on.I was still admiring myself in front of the mirror when he entered. He didn’t say a word. He simply stared at me, which made me even more nervous.I slightly turned my gaze toward him, waiting for his opinion on the dress I was wearing. He made no comment.“Let’s go,” he simply said.I shrugged, irritated by his tone and attitude after everything we had said earlier. He didn’t seem interested at all.Undoubtedly… I was completely delusi
Chapter SevenI quickened my pace and settled beside him in the car. The driver wasted no time and immediately started the engine before driving away. The car was strangely silent, although that no longer seemed strange to me. Lucas rarely spoke. My mind went back to what Grandpa had said earlier. Grandchildren.I let out an ironic laugh. That wasn’t going to happen. How the hell were we supposed to give him grandchildren when we weren’t romantically involved? The driver stopped when we arrived at the mansion.I got out and went to my room. The day had already been long and depressing, because of Lucas.I rolled my eyes in disbelief as I remembered how ungrateful he had been toward my thoughtful gestures. He entered the room and took off his tie. He began to speak.“I want you to ignore what you heard from my grandfather about the grandchildren… you know that isn’t going to happen,” he murmured.“You should be aware of the terms of our marriage—first of all, I’m not looking for a roma
Chapter Six The next morning, I woke up and discovered that Lucas was already up and dressed for work.He was adjusting his watch when he noticed me looking at him. He was breathtaking, with a natural beauty that seemed to require no effort.“Good morning,” I greeted him, looking away and trying to hide the admiration I felt for him.“Good morning,” he replied. His voice was husky and slightly deep, which caught my attention more than anything else.I tried to pull myself together.I nodded and swallowed hard, doing my best to remain calm as his fresh scent filled my senses. He sat a little closer, while still maintaining a respectful distance.“Careful,” he said as I stood up, nearly losing my balance as I headed toward the bathroom.“Thank you,” I muttered, hurrying inside before embarrassing myself any further.I entered the bathroom and let out a frustrated sigh; finally alone, I felt almost relieved. This was harder than I had imagined.I lightly slapped myself several times and
