Nora’s pov

The Castellano estate was not a home; it was a stone fortress tucked into the private hills overlooking the river, surrounded by high iron gates and security cameras humming quietly in the mist.

Inside, the grand mansion smelled of old mahogany, beeswax, and a faint, metallic tang that reminded me of copper coins.

An older waiter carrying a tray of polished crystal met me near the grand staircase, his eyes scanning my damp clothes with scrutiny.

"Mr. Castellano is looking for a qualified private tutor for his nephew, Master Leo," the waiter said softly, leaning in close while keeping his voice strictly professional. "He is not looking for a companion. If you have any absurd ideas about climbing into the Don's bed, throw them out now. He has long been fed up with women trying to manipulate him by getting pregnant, they’ll switch his birth control pills for vitamins or puncture holes in his condoms just to secure a title. Keep your focus on your work."

A cold prickle ran down my neck, but I straightened my spine. "I came here to earn a salary for my mother’s medical treatment, not to play games."

The waiter offered a brief, approving nod and opened the heavy double doors leading into the main drawing room.

The room was vast, under a towering crystal chandelier. At the far end sat a four-year-old boy on a hand-woven rug. He was small, wearing a dark sweater, his small arms wrapped tightly around his knees. He didn't look up when we entered. He stared intently at the floor, his frame rigid, entirely trapped within his own silent world.

"He has autism and does not speak," the waiter whispered to me. "He rejects every tutor."

Luca Castellano sat in a dark leather armchair nearby, an unread document resting on his lap. He looked exhausted, the sharp lethal edge he carried in the alley still lingering around his shoulders, but under the amber light, dark shadows bruised the skin beneath his eyes.

"Try," Luca said flatly, his deep voice heavy. "If he throws a tantrum, your driver back to the city will be waiting."

I took a quiet breath. I didn't rush toward the boy. Children who retreat into silence do not like to be cornered.

Instead, I walked calmly toward the corner of the room where a stunning obsidian-black grand piano stood. I lifted the heavy mahogany key cover, sat down on the leather bench, and placed my fingers over the ivory keys.

I didn't play a loud, complex piece. I played a soft, gentle lullaby, one my mother used to play when the night felt too big and cold. The notes floated softly into the high ceiling, filling the quiet space with warm melody.

From the edge of my vision, I watched the boy.

At first, his shoulders twitched and slowly, his knees unclasped. His small head turned toward the instrument. His eyes, huge, dark, and filled with a profound, quiet shadow fixed on my hands.

I pitched my voice low and began to sing softly, matching the quiet rhythm of the chords.

Leo stood up. He took three small, hesitant steps forward, his tiny hands clutched into fists. He stopped right beside the piano bench.

I didn't reach out to touch him. I simply patted the empty space beside me on the cushion.

"It's wide enough for two," I murmured gently, keeping the left hand moving over the keys.

He hesitated, then hoisted himself onto the bench. He extended one small, pale finger and pressed a single high key.

Plink.

I instantly wove a warm, rich chord around his note, turning his single touch into a piece of music.

A tiny, almost invisible twitch appeared at the corner of Leo's lips. He pressed another key. Plink. I answered it with a warm harmony again.

And then, it happened. A tiny, breathy sound bubbled up from his chest. A faint giggle. A bright, genuine smile broke across his face, lighting up his dark eyes as he looked up at me.

I looked across the top of the grand piano.

Luca Castellano was standing by his chair. The documents had fallen to the rug, the cold mafia don was staring at his nephew with a look of raw, unadulterated shock.

Nora’s povThree years later. The courtyard of the Nora Benneth Castellano Music Academy was alive with noise and laughter. Children ran across the sunlit lawn holding violin cases and sheet music, while proud parents gathered on the terrace enjoying the mid-afternoon refreshments.Inside the main auditorium, the acoustics carried a sweet, resonant sound that filled every corner of the high-arched space. On the center stage sat two grand pianos side-by-side. On the left sat seven-year-old Leo, looking sharp in his suit, his fingers moving across the keys with effortless grace as he led the academy’s youth ensemble through a classical movement.Right beside him sat two-year-old Maya, her tiny feet dan

Nora’s povSix months later. The crisp air of early spring had returned to the city, bringing with it bright green shoots along the estate’s stone perimeter and the warm, golden light of clear mornings. My mother’s transition from St. Jude’s to the private guesthouse on the estate had gone smoothly three months ago. Now, she spent her afternoons sitting on the sunlit terrace with her sketching pads, her cheeks healthy and full, her laughter joining Leo's as he chased the puppy through the garden beds.In the grand music room, the Steinway stood open.Leo sat beside me on the long bench, his little fingers moving with remarkable precision across the keys as he played a warm, rolling harmony. He didn't j

Nora’s povThe storm cleared before dawn, leaving the morning sky a pale, pristine blue. Sunlight spilled over the third-floor balcony, washing the dark mahogany furniture of Luca’s private bedroom in soft golden light.I woke up wrapped in the deep warmth of his arms. The scent of dark cedar, rain, and his warm skin enveloped me.For the first time since I had stepped through the iron gates of the estate, my mind felt entirely at peace. There were no looming hospital bills, no shadow of Sebastian lurking in the dark, and no terrifying uncertainty about where I belonged.Luca was already awake. He was lying on his side, his broad hand resting gently on my waist, his dark grey eyes fixing on mine with a quiet, fierce tenderness. The dark ink of the serpent tat

Nora’s povThe world returned in sharp, agonizing fragments. My head throbbed with a sickening, heavy pulse, the lingering taste of chloroform bitter against the back of my throat. When I forced my eyes open, the space around me was cold, cavernous, and pitch-black, illuminated only by a single bare bulb dangling from a rusted chain high above. The air smelled of stagnant harbor water, damp concrete, and ancient iron.I tried to move my hands, but heavy hemp rope bit sharply into my wrists, binding them tightly behind the wooden chair I was strapped to. My ankles were tied securely to the chair’s thick legs.A few yards away, pacing back and forth across the oil-stained floor, was Sebastian. He held a half-empty bottle of cheap rye whiskey in one hand and the rusted revolver in the other. His hair was wild, plastered to his forehead with sweat and rain, his breath coming in ragged, erratic hitches."You're awake," he said, turning sharply toward me, a manic, breathless laugh escaping

Nora’s povThe thunderstorm hit the city at dusk with violent force, tearing through the streets with jagged lightning and sheets of blinding rain.I spent the afternoon at the estate helping Leo set up a fortress made of couch cushions in the living room. By seven, he was fast asleep, worn out from playing with the puppy, clutching his favorite stuffed wolf under the warm fleece blanket.Around eight o'clock, Gable approached me in the music room, holding a silver tray with an official courier envelope."Mrs. Castellano," Gable said, bowing his head slightly. "A driver from St. Jude’s just delivered these. They are the emergency discharge authorization papers for your mother's transfer next month. Dr. Harrison noted they require your physical signature on the original carbon copies tonight so the medical transport can be booked."I looked at the official hospital logo stamped in red ink across the thick paper. "Did Dr. Harrison say why it couldn't wait until morning?""The private tr

Nora’s povThe golden clarity of Saturday gave way to a muggy, suffocating heat by Tuesday morning. Heavy grey clouds hung low over the skyline, trapping the city’s exhaust and humidity in a dense, oppressive haze.My mother’s progress, however, was a bright light through the gloom. When I arrived at St. Jude’s private wing shortly after eleven, Dr. Harrison greeted me outside her suite with a warm, approving smile. Her oxygen line had been removed, and the fluid buildup in her lungs was completely gone. For the first time in over a year, her chart didn't carry the terrifying red tag of critical status."She’s making a remarkable recovery, Mrs. Castellano," Dr. Harrison noted, handing me the updated chart. "At this rate, we can discuss an outpatient transition to your estate by the end of next month."I sat by my mother's bedside for two hours, peeling apples for her and listening to her talk about the garden she wanted to plant once she was discharged. Her hand in mine felt stronger,
