Chapter 18

Author: Love Berries
Aurora couldn’t take it anymore and quickly cut Megan off.

"Alright, alright, I got it! Hanging up now!"

Before Megan could respond, she ended the call.

Then it hit her.

Lucas heard everything Megan had just said.

She suddenly felt like she couldn’t even look at him.

However, Lucas didn’t press further.

He simply watched her with a knowing smile, his amusement clear.

Aurora needed a drink to calm her down.

She pushed him aside and sat up, straightening her slightly disheveled clothes.

Trying to maintain her composure, she reached for the water on the table and took a sip, hoping it would cool the heat rising in her face.

Lucas watched her with growing amusement, his gaze deepening.

Then, he stood and stepped closer, leaning down until they were at eye level.

"Why is your face so red?"

Aurora’s heartbeat pounded in her ears.

Avoiding his gaze, she frantically searched for something—anything—to focus on.

Her eyes landed on a magazine sitting on the coffee table.

Tessa gracefully descended from the stairs."Aurora, you're going a bit too far. Chuck once saved my life. Your hostility towards him puts me in an awkward position." She approached Grace and gently took her arm.Aurora stared at Tessa, utterly speechless. She struggled to suppress her rising anger."Mom, I'll ask you once more: are you planning to deal with Chuck or not?""Aurora, just leave this to me. I'll handle it," Grace answered evasively.Seeing her mother’s vague response, Aurora felt a wave of bitter disappointment. She knew Grace wouldn't do anything—she would always smooth things over, favoring Tessa above all else."Fine. I'll deal with it myself."Aurora turned away, unwilling to waste more words."Aurora," Tessa quickly called out as she saw Aurora leaving, her tone puzzled yet gentle, attempting to ease the tension. "Why are you so worked up?"She walked up to Aurora, trying to calm her down. "Wouldn't it be easier if you just publicly revealed your identity and of

“Aurora, you look pale. Did you realize something?” Megan immediately noticed the change in her friend’s expression.Aurora took a deep breath, suppressing her suspicions for the moment.“It's only a hunch right now. I don't have any proof.”“So what’s your plan?”“I'll cross that bridge when I come to it. But first, I need to make sure Chuck leaves Walton Corporation.”A cold glint flashed in Aurora's eyes. She was not someone who'd let others walk all over her.Just then, the waiter arrived with their dishes, interrupting their conversation. The table was filled with beautifully plated dishes, the rich aroma drifting into the air, but Aurora had completely lost her appetite. She distractedly moved the food around her bowl, her mind continuously replaying images of Tessa and Chuck.Picking up a piece of pork ribs, she chewed mechanically, barely tasting anything.Seeing Aurora's state, Megan tactfully dropped the topic about the company, shifting the conversation to lighter subjects

Lucas simply smiled mysteriously without directly answering her question. Instead, he stepped closer, gently wrapping an arm around her waist.“It’s beautiful. It’ll suit you perfectly.”Aurora felt warmth rush to her cheeks from his sudden display of affection, her heartbeat speeding up involuntarily. She looked up, meeting Lucas’ deep gaze.“Oh, right,” Lucas said, as though suddenly remembering something. He reached into his pocket and took out a delicate little box. “This is for you.”Aurora accepted the box, opening it to find a dazzling diamond necklace sparkling brilliantly under the lights.“This is too much…I can’t accept it!” Aurora exclaimed in surprise, never expecting such an extravagant gift from Lucas. But Lucas only smiled, gently pushing the box back into her hands. “It’s just a small gift. There will be many more in the future, Mrs. Carter.”He paused briefly, and a subtle tenderness flashed through his eyes. “Don’t overthink it and just accept it.”Aurora was abou

Aurora, once plain and uninteresting in Joseph’s eyes, now sparkled like a diamond, so dazzling it nearly blinded him.Even though he despised her, Joseph couldn't deny how stunning she looked tonight. He felt an unexpected itch in his chest—a restless stirring he struggled to suppress. But quickly, that faint attraction turned into annoyance and resentment. She was clearly trying to catch his attention. After all, she'd always been like this.“What is Aurora doing here?” Joseph muttered quietly, his tone laced with disbelief and irritation.Beside him, Judy chimed in with feigned concern, “I wonder whose attention she's trying to catch dressed like that? Honestly…” She let her words trail off, though she couldn't hide the smugness in her expression. The more shameless Aurora appeared, the more Judy’s own image of elegance and gentle dignity stood out in comparison. However, Aurora paid no attention to their whispers. Instead, she confidently mingled with other guests, her every mo

Judy was seething with rage. She originally assumed Aurora would fall into miserable obscurity after leaving Walton Corporation, yet here Aurora was, appearing radiant and dazzling, her every gesture filled with effortless confidence.Judy gripped her wine glass so tightly that her nails almost pierced her palm."Don't tell me she's latched onto some rich guy," Judy remarked sourly, her voice dripping with scorn and jealousy.Joseph gave a dismissive snort. "Her? Other than that pretty face, what else does she have to offer? She's probably nothing more than a high-end social climber who's already been passed around and discarded by those big shots. Anyone with eyes can see right through her.""Exactly," Judy echoed. "Who knows what tricks she pulled to sneak into an event like this."The envy in Judy's eyes was almost tangible. She expected Aurora to be in dire straits after leaving Walton Corporation.Yet here Aurora stood, as elegant and radiant as ever. She had to do something to

“An ordinary employee?” Aurora laughed lightly, her eyes shimmering with subtle contempt.“Joseph, perhaps you’ve misunderstood what ‘ordinary’ means? Even if I were serving drinks here, I'd still be a hundred times better than some spoiled heir who relies solely on his family’s shadow, only capable of dragging down the family business.”Joseph’s face turned livid. He pointed a trembling finger at Aurora. “You... you... how dare you!” Never in his life had he been humiliated like this.“How dare I?” Aurora didn’t retreat. Instead, she stepped closer, her gaze piercing him like a blade.“Who was it that once vowed to love me forever, only to rush into the arms of his first love the moment he turned around? “Who wrote that laughable breakup list just to get rid of me? Joseph Hunt, tell me, who's really out of line here?”The guests around them began whispering among themselves, their curious eyes drawn to the scene.Joseph’s face burned as if he had been slapped hard several times.

All it did was make Aurora feel like her past self had been unbelievably naive. But Joseph kept going, oblivious to her discomfort. "Those were our best memories. I still remember the first time you blushed, the way you looked in that white dress—so sweet and shy. “You were always so gentle and soft when you were with me… it was such a beautiful time."As he spoke, he watched her face closely, searching for some flicker of emotion. But to Aurora, hearing those words from him made her skin crawl. The more he went on, the more irritated she became. Her expression turned colder by the second. She reached for her phone, ready to call a ride. Staying here any longer felt like a direct assault on her intelligence.Joseph noticed the gesture. That was when it hit him—she hadn’t been listening to a single word he said. And in that moment, he felt like a complete fool.He had poured out his heart, and yet this woman—this ungrateful bitch—could still be so heartless. His eyes darkened. Aurora’s anger ignited the second those words left his mouth.Without hesitation, she slapped Joseph hard across the face, her voice sharp and cold. "What the hell is wrong with you?"This is still Walton Corporation, and you think you can throw a fit right here? Whether I talk or not is none of your damn business. Try worrying about yourself."The slap caught Joseph completely off guard. Before he could react, Aurora had already snatched her phone back.He clutched his cheek, momentarily stunned, not even sure where to look.Rage overtook him. "You bitch! You actually hit me!"Aurora raised her chin defiantly. "So, what if I did? You brought it on yourself."Joseph couldn’t stand the smugness in her expression. Grinding his teeth, he snapped, "You think you can just cut me off like that? It’s not gonna be that easy!"Aurora, we were together for three years. Don’t forget, I’ve seen everything. You're not afraid I’ll send it all out?"His threat made Aurora pause, eyes narrowing as s

After all, this was a choice, and a gamble, Aurora had made for herself.Even if she lost the bet, she knew she'd have to deal with the consequences on her own.She pulled out her phone, opened the ride-hailing app, and was just about to book a car when a voice laced with fury and bitterness cut through the air."Aurora Walton, you’re doing this on purpose, aren’t you?"The sudden sound startled her. She hadn’t even noticed someone standing nearby.Steadying herself, Aurora looked up, only to be met with Joseph’s face, dark and twisted with resentment."Well, look who’s changed careers," she said dryly, unable to resist the jab.Joseph blinked, caught off guard. "What’s that supposed to mean?""Nothing much. Just surprised to find a clown performing right outside my office," Aurora said casually. "Now move. Stop blocking my way."At that, Joseph’s expression twisted. The fresh style he’d worked so hard on couldn’t hide the rage contorting his face. "What the hell does that mean? I ca

"You’re my woman. If I don’t treat you well, who else should I treat well? Go to the mall this afternoon. Don’t come back until you’ve spent it all."Judy leaned into him, looking blissfully content. And especially Lukey’s cooking."But Lucas remained expressionless. "Don’t touch anything. Wait till your sister-in-law gets up."Wendy pouted but, under his gaze, reluctantly put down the piece of fried egg. From the corner of her eye, she saw Aurora. The woman didn’t say a word. Lucas watched Aurora’s retreating figure but didn’t follow. He knew what she needed right now wasn’t more pressure, but space to cool down. If he pushed too hard, it would only make things worse. His fists clenched tightly at his sides. Only when the guest room door slammed shut with a loud bang did he snap out of his daze. Letting out a long, heavy sigh, he turned and headed toward the master bedroom. Meanwhile, in the guest room, Aurora sat in silence, unable to shake the frustration tightening in her chest. She had told herself from the very beginning to never believe a man’s promises. She and Lucas had always been about mutual benefit, and nothing more. And yet, something had started to shift. Something she hadn’t accounted for. Things were slipping out of her control, veering in a direction she didn’t expect and wanted. She raised a hand to her chest, fingers pressing lightly against her heart. That steady thrum felt more and more unmanageable. Why had she go
