Chapter 1

It was a miracle I managed to make it back to the pack. My gown was in tatters, slashed to ribbons by brambles and stained with mud and blood. The excruciating pain I had been suppressing now tore through me like a thousand knives, forcing me to collapse weakly onto the ground.

Curtis Wilder and Ciara Silverfang were walking side by side down the street. She clutched the jewelry she had just purchased, a radiant smile on her face. As usual, he was carrying all her shopping bags.

Ciara spotted me first. "Willow, how did you wind up in this state?" she gasped dramatically.

Curtis' expression shifted, and he hurried over, pulling me into his arms. "Willow, what happened to you?"

Then, as if something suddenly clicked, he scratched his nose guiltily. "Ciara said you've been fooled twice before and wanted to see if you'd decline my invitation this time, so she deliberately picked a venue way out in the outskirts. I had no idea you'd actually go."

I stared at him long and hard. So, the date I had looked forward to with all my heart had merely been a cruel joke he and Ciara had played on me.

"Don't be mad, Willow. Your birthday is in three days. I'll propose to you then. I mean it this time!" he said earnestly.

In the past, my heart would've melted when I heard that.

However, I looked down at my battered, dirt-streaked body and shook my head calmly. "That won't be necessary. Let's break up, Curtis," I said softly.

Curtis was taken aback, his brow furrowed. "You're breaking up with me just because I didn't show up last night?"

Ciara slunk over and muttered, "This is all my fault, Willow. I just thought the Moon Goddess Festival was too boring, so I wanted to play a prank with Curtis. If you don't like it, I won't do it again. Please don't be mad at us."

Curtis immediately interjected. "What does this have to do with you? It was just a joke we played for the Moon Goddess Festival."

He turned back to me and said softly, "That's enough, Willow. Let's talk about this when we get home. Ciara is naive, so you need to be the bigger person here."

I burst into laughter. "She's egged you on to do so many awful things to me, Curtis. Why should I indulge her?"

His expression changed. "Stop making a scene, Willow! Ciara has already apologized to you. Why are you still hung up on something so trivial?"

My knuckles turned white as I clutched the torn hem of my gown. My finger, burned by silver from one of their pranks, still throbbed with a dull ache.

I had almost lost my life outside the pack's borders. Yet, in his eyes, it was nothing more than a trivial matter.

All of a sudden, I felt exhausted. "I've had enough, Curtis. We're done." With that, I pushed him aside and turned to leave.

Ciara's voice rang out behind me. "Hurry up and chase after her, Curtis. Didn't you say you can't live without her? Willow's leaving! Why aren't you stopping her?"

Curtis merely scoffed. "She's crossed the line this time. I'll let her head back and cool off first. Besides, she's not actually going anywhere.

"She has no one else to rely on but me in the Zephyr pack. Where else can she go when she's mad? Once she calms down, I'll coax her a little, and everything will go back to normal."

His words were like a sharp blade, plunging straight into my heart. He thought I was homeless, but he was wrong. I was the sole heir to the Alpha of the Dark Briar pack.

My father, Walter Hawthorne, was the strongest werewolf of the Dark Briar pack. I'd been cherished and doted on by the entire pack since I was a child. I was destined to step into Dad's shoes and reign as the new leader of the Dark Briar pack.

It had taken Curtis an entire year to court me. I'd been deeply moved by his persistence, yet Dad had sternly refused. "Willow, you're the future Alpha of the Dark Briar pack. You shouldn't abandon your duties for a male wolf."

However, my head was completely in the clouds back then. I went against Dad's wishes, renounced my status as heir, and followed Curtis to the Zephyr pack.

I'd foolishly thought home was wherever he was. But now, I knew I was wrong.

The following morning, I arrived at the training grounds in the center of the pack's territory on time. It was completely different from the lax and easygoing Zephyr pack. All the warriors were trained in an orderly and strictly disciplined manner. Standing at the front of the grounds was a tall, imposing figure—Rowan. He stood ramrod straight, his face expressionless, his gaze calm and composed. When he noticed me, he nodded at me and said bluntly, "Alpha Walter has ordered me not to give you any special treatment. Your training intensity, fieldwork, and border assessments will all follow the standards for a legitimate heir. I won't go easy on you, Ms. Hawthorne. Be prepared to work hard."He paused before continuing with a hint of skepticism. "If you can't handle the hardship, you'd be better off going back to pursue your love life."I met his gaze calmly and responded firmly, "I don't need you to go easy on me. It's true that I did lose myself for love, but I've already come to

With just a few sentences, Curtis exposed all of Ciara's wrongdoing. The entire pack erupted in an uproar, and the looks directed at Ciara were filled with disgust and contempt. With the truth laid bare before everyone, no one was willing to defend Ciara anymore. With accusations and mocking laughter filling the venue, Ciara could no longer bear to stay. Burying her face in her hands, she fled in tears. Before long, she was forced to leave the Zephyr pack due to the entire pack's disdain and hostility toward her. After she left, Curtis listlessly returned to my quarters.Looking around the empty room, endless remorse surged through his heart. He desperately wanted to find me, but he had no idea where I could've gone. Curtis was lost in a daze when the conversation of a couple of passing pack members reached his ears, confirming that I had indeed left the Zephyr Pack in the Dark Briar Pack's motorcade. His face was filled with shock, and his heart jolted. Could I really have bee

Curtis ran like a madman, bursting into my quarters at Celestia Residence in just a few minutes. Yet, the moment he pushed the door open, all his hopes were dashed. Every single trace of me that had existed in the room had been wiped completely clean. Curtis froze at the threshold. His blood ran cold as the last glimmer of hope in his heart finally crumbled. Overwhelmed by bitter regret and sheer panic, he stood frozen in the empty room, unable to come back to his senses for a long while.Just then, Ciara sauntered in. Adopting a worried look, she walked up to Curtis and asked with concern, "Is Willow still not back yet, Curtis?"Before he could respond, she hurriedly added sarcastically, "It looks like she doesn't really care about you or this ceremony. She doesn't love you at all. Even if she's throwing a tantrum, she should know when to draw the line." In the past, he would've been fooled by her words. But now that he knew the truth, he saw right through Ciara's malicious and

Ciara didn't stop until she'd run a considerable distance. Then, she aggressively wiped the tears away from her face. Curtis' cold, resolute look from moments ago cut deeply into her heart, leaving her burning with rage and hatred. Clenching her fists tightly, her eyes were filled with sinister malice and bitter resentment as curses raced through her mind. "Willow, that bitch, just won't stop haunting us!" Ciara simply couldn't wrap her head around how, after being played for a fool and put through so much humiliation time and time again, I still clung to Curtis and refused to let go. Gritting her teeth, she secretly made up her mind. Since those little pranks weren't enough to drive me away, she'd go even further next time. She was determined to kick me out once and for all so that there would never again be a place for me by Curtis' side.…Curtis stood alone in the banquet hall, lost in thought for quite a while. When he recalled how Ciara had sprinted off in tears, looking

Meanwhile, in the banquet hall of the Zephyr Pack, Curtis' expression was terrifyingly dark after the call ended. Deep down, he was convinced that I was merely throwing a tantrum. The pack members who had gathered to witness the mating ceremony gradually dispersed. Whispers and mocking remarks rippled through the crowd, reaching his ears and utterly humiliating him. Ciara stood beside him in silence this entire time. Noticing that all the guests had left, she immediately put on a sensible front and gently comforted him. "Forget it, Curtis. All of the guests have left. There's no way this ceremony can go on."She deliberately sighed. "Willow's being way too willful this time. You poured your heart and soul into this ceremony and spared no expense to make it happen, only for it to all go to waste. "Besides, everyone in the pack is laughing at you, saying you bent over backward to please her, only to get stood up and make a complete fool of yourself."Noticing that Curtis was sile

"That's impossible!" Curtis hastily dismissed the thought. "Willow is indeed from the Dark Briar pack, but she's kept a low profile in the Zephyr pack all these years. "She's not someone important, and she hasn't stayed in touch with the Dark Briar pack. Her entire world revolves around me, so there's no way it could be her!"Ciara chimed in, "Could Willow have seen the members from the Dark Briar pack and deliberately gone to kiss up to them? That could be the reason she's late. After all, a wolf of ordinary blood like her would never normally have the chance to get close to a core member of the Dark Briar pack."Curtis felt even more agitated. He tried to mind-link me, but it felt as if he was throwing a stone into the deep ocean; he received nothing but silence. In the end, he dialed my number. The second the call connected, he demanded, "Willow, where on earth are you? Have you forgotten that it's our mating ceremony today? Everyone's waiting for you!"At that moment, I was
