Chapter 7

Author: Soleil
Audrey burst into a fit of wild laughter. "You think I'm as stupid as you are? If I wanted you gone, why on earth would I save you?" she sneered, eyes gleaming with cruel amusement. "I'll be honest—those kidnappers? They're real. I hired them. They're enemies of Kevin, sworn to see him suffer. And today, only one of us gets to live. That person is me. As for you... you can stay buried at the bottom of the sea forever."

My heart sank like a stone.

She truly wanted me dead.

And if these men despised Kevin as much as she claimed, then there was no doubt—I wouldn't be leaving here alive.

Just then, Kevin seemed to finally come to a decision. He stepped toward the kidnappers and declared in a low, steady voice, "Four million. Let both of them go."

The leader of the gang chuckled. "Kevin, no can do. Today, only one walks away."

The man's fingers—like venomous snakes—slithered across both my cheek and Audrey's. His touch was icy, menacing. Audrey shrieked, flipping the script in an inst

  • Dying for His Lover   Chapter 9

"You're wrong, Kevin. I left you because that's what you wanted. Have you forgotten what you said on your birthday?"I stared at him, unflinching, watching every minuscule twitch in his expression as each word I uttered landed like shards of glass—cutting, cruel, deliberate. His face cracked with every syllable, unraveling before my eyes. What had he said that day?Oh yes. He'd said, "Cate is obedient. If one day she dies in Audrey's place, well, that would be a blessing for her."I brought my heel down hard on his foot. "Well, just as you wished—I took that blow for Audrey. It cost me my life."He clutched me then, tightening his arms around me. His voice softened, pleading, guilt oozing from every word. "I'm sorry, Cate. I didn't mean it. I was just angry. Angry that you were always looking at another man. That's why I said those things. I never wanted you to die—I didn't. Please don't leave me. I don't want you to leave me!"His desperation mounted, spiraling into madness, but

I was certain Kevin had seen me.Broadcast live to the entire world from the Olympic Games, I stood poised on the diving platform, drew in a slow, steady breath, and offered a radiant smile before executing the perfect dive.A thunderous round of applause erupted from the stands. In that moment, I was transported back to the edge of the cliff where I had once been pushed to my supposed end.How could Kevin ever have imagined? I may have only graduated from vocational school, but I was born with an exceptional gift for diving.Did he really think a few crashing waves would take me under?Steve had been diagnosed with leukemia, and the only matching bone marrow I could find for him came with a price tag: one million dollars. That night, in a dimly lit alleyway, a blood-soaked suit clung to a man like a second skin. The tailoring alone screamed a five-figure price tag. Even in the murky glow of the streetlight, I recognized it immediately. For days, I had been trapped in a suffoca

And then, just like that, it was the day of the wedding.Kevin looked me up and down as I stood in front of him in my wedding dress. He lifted my chin, his eyes dark with some intoxicating blend of possessiveness and hunger. "Cate," he murmured, "you're absolutely stunning.""This beauty of yours," he added with a smirk, "it can only belong to me, forever. Understand? I want to rip that dress off you right now… and watch you beg and moan beneath me."I, meanwhile, continued calmly doing my makeup. The makeshift wedding stage had already been erected. If I didn't walk out looking utterly breathtaking, how else was I going to dazzle Kevin into regretting everything for the rest of his life?Catching a glimpse of myself in the mirror—so stunning I nearly forgot to breathe—I finally smiled. For the first time in days, the tension around my brows and eyes lifted.Kevin was elated, drunk on power and expensive liquor. I had never seen him this high on life. He was practically floating,

Audrey had fallen ill and was admitted to a hospital.Kevin was right there, glued to her bedside.Worried about him, I stayed up all night cooking porridge for him.But by the time I returned from a quick visit to the restroom, the thermos had already landed in Audrey's delicate hands."Thank you, Kevin," she said. "You're so good to me. And this porridge! It's not bad—Cate really does know her way around a kitchen. Do you want to try a little?"She giggled, spooning a taste toward his lips.He gave her a soft chuckle in return. "Silly girl. If I don't take care of you, who else would? If you like it, I'll have her make it for you every day."For a moment, I froze. Then I stepped in, calm and composed.Audrey's lips curled with a hint of triumph as she held up the thermos and waved it at me. "Sorry, Cate. I've got a bit of a sensitive stomach, and Kevin said I should eat this instead. I hope you don't mind?""Oh, but this isn't new," she added with a seemingly innocent blink

Of course, Audrey showed up to Kevin's grandfather's birthday party. She was seated to Kevin's left, while I was separated from him by a stranger—clearly, a message. No words were needed. The seating arrangement alone revealed the truth in its stark simplicity: She was the one he wanted to protect. She was the one he cared for.Dinner was halfway through when Kevin's grandfather suddenly raised his glass and made a declaration that stopped every clink of cutlery in the room."Since Kevin and Cate are already engaged," the old man said with a faint smile and a voice still full of command, "I have no other wish but to live long enough to see them married properly. And hopefully, to hold a cute little grandson in my arms someday."Cate may not have grown up with you all, and she might not be one of your childhood friends, but I hope none of you will exclude her. She's the granddaughter-in-law I approve of. She will be Kevin's wife in every way that counts—by name, by law, and by heart

  • Dying for His Lover   Chapter 3

Of course, Kevin wouldn't let me leave. After all, he still needed me to be Audrey's shield against his enemies. He locked me up in the villa like a prisoner and assigned two bodyguards to watch me round-the-clock. I tried escaping more than once, but each attempt ended in failure. I'd barely made it past the gates before being dragged back, or I'd arrive at the airport only to be told my flight had been mysteriously delayed. The only time he let me out was for his grandfather's birthday. That day, he leaned in close, his voice low and venomous beside my ear. "Be good now, and don't run."His hands rested lightly on my shoulders, but I stood frozen at the door, trembling.Someone glanced at me, puzzled. "Cate, is it the cold? Why are you shaking so much?"I didn't dare say a word.It was only in those days that I began to understand the true extent of Kevin's methods. The moment he realized I wanted to break up with him, he didn't hesitate. He kicked me down into the basement

The pain I expected never came. The wine bottle never hit my mascot head. Kevin's hand shot out and intercepted it mid-air.I stood frozen, staring at him in stunned silence. He slouched lazily on the sofa, his figure cloaked in cigarette smoke that curled around his dark brows like ghosts. His devastatingly handsome face turned toward me, his eyes calm and unreadable."Bar staff?"I nodded."Your boss sent you over?"Another nod.He stared at me for a moment—and then, unexpectedly, he laughed. And the thing was—everyone knew Kevin never laughed lightly. If he did, it meant one of two things: someone was about to be drowned in diamonds… or in blood. My heart thumped wildly. Inside the suffocating mascot costume, my fists were clenched so tightly I could feel the fabric of my uniform tearing beneath my nails. I just wanted to leave. I wanted him to let me go.The way he held Audrey was too intimate. It made my eyes sting."Your dancing…" he said slowly, "reminds me of someon

Earlier today, Kevin Ford had stood beside me in front of the media, declaring to the world we were engaged. Forever and ever. Just the two of us.But now, mere hours later, I found him tucked quietly into a corner of the club's private lounge, arms gently cradling another woman. So delicately. So reverently. As if she were the most precious thing in the world. Her name was Audrey Eastwood. She was Kevin's childhood sweetheart, the one he had protected since they were kids.Someone nearby chuckled. "Kevin, don't tell me you're actually serious about Cate? You're engaged already! What's going to happen to our dear Audrey?"The words hit me like a slap, and I froze at the entrance.I wanted to know the answer too. Was Kevin, the golden boy of Raellere City's elite, really capable of falling for someone like me—someone who had pulled him back from the brink of death?Me, with my vocational school diploma and a waitressing job?I hesitated, then stepped back, melting into the shadow
