Chapter 1

Author: Moore
It was the day after Alessio Albini drove me out of Albini Manor. In my weak state, I found Alessio in a bridal boutique.

Camelia Germani was standing in front of a huge full-length mirror. Dressed in a pristine white wedding gown, she was smiling as she tried on a wedding veil.

Alessio was obviously stunned for a moment when he caught sight of me. I walked right up to him and handed him a stack of medical records.

I said, "Alessio, I swear I wasn't lying. Here are the medical test results. I also have the attending physician's number, so if you don't believe me, you can call him to verify."

Alessio took the medical records. When he read the detailed diagnosis, his expression shifted a little. He immediately took out his phone and said, "Give me his number."

I felt tears welling up in my eyes. Once the call was made, the truth would finally be out in the open.

But just then, a hesitant voice rang out near us. "The doctor Estella mentioned… Is he the same doctor I saw last time?"

With a conflicted look on her face, Camelia continued, "I went for a checkup at the hospital yesterday, and I was in the parking lot when I saw Estella slipping a large envelope to a doctor…"

She acted as if she had said something wrong, and she waved her hands in a panic. "I might be mistaken, though. I was a distance away from them, so I didn't hear what they were saying."

My face instantly turned pale. The attending physician had indeed accepted an envelope from me, but all it contained was some money I had given as thanks.

After all, he had helped me arrange a consultation with a specialist from overseas. It was nothing like what Camelia was hinting at.

I was about to explain myself when Camelia lowered her head, looking like a startled little kitten. "It was probably just a coincidence. I must be overthinking it. He can't be the doctor who wrote Estella's medical report.

"Alessio, don't take this the wrong way. I don't think she'd go that far to stop the wedding."

Alessio slowly lowered his phone, the emotion on his face gradually fading away.

My heart sank. "That's not true. The envelope was just—"

"Enough. When are you going to stop?" Alessio interrupted me. He didn't raise his voice, but it was heavy with disappointment.

I frantically waved my hands, trying to explain, "Alessio, I wasn't lying. If you don't believe me, you can call the doctor right now."

I reached for his phone, but he took a step backward and dodged me. "Estella, I know you don't want me to get married, but I've told you time and again that Camelia is pregnant, and I have to take responsibility.

"I can understand if you're just angry or upset, or even if you hate me. But you shouldn't fake an illness, bribe a doctor, or even use death to pressure me into changing my mind."

Alessio looked at me. His gaze was full of disappointment. "Estella, you weren't like this before."

Those words hit me like a knife to the chest, and I couldn't catch my breath.

Alessio continued, "Just go home. The wedding will not be called off. When the child is born, I'll make the necessary arrangements. You will still be Donna, so stop causing trouble, okay?"

He didn't spare me another glance. He carefully supported Camelia as they made their way out.

When they walked past me, Camelia glanced back at me with a smug, victorious look.

I stood where I was, watching the two gradually disappear from view.

Suddenly, I recalled what happened many years ago.

Back then, Alessio wasn't the Don's heir yet. He held my hand as he said earnestly to me, "When I inherit the family, I promise I'll marry you."

But now, he was indeed getting married, but the bride wasn't me.

I looked down at the medical records in my hands. A single teardrop slid down my cheek.

I thought, "Alessio, you said you'd come back and marry me after you'd gotten things settled with Camelia, but sadly, I won't ever live to see that day.

"My cancer has already spread, and the doctor said I only have about seven days left. In seven days, I will be leaving you forever."

Now, only regret clung tightly to him, pressing so hard on him that he could barely breathe. His legs gave way, and he slumped to the floor on his knees. He murmured with a hoarse voice into the void, "Estella, I'm sorry. I'm really sorry, so please come back, okay? I will never blindly trust someone again. I swear I won't let you down ever again."He suddenly recalled the phone call from the intern after the resuscitation that day.The cold words seemed to ring clearly in his ears. "Please come to the hospital as soon as possible to identify the body and complete the necessary procedures."At that moment, Alessio completely lost his mind.He couldn't wait even a second longer. He could no longer find any traces of me in that room. After all, he had believed Camelia's lies and thrown away everything that belonged to me.His fingertips were shaking as he reached out to open the drawer of the bedside table. The drawer was empty save for a crude paper ring lying in the furthest corner. He made the ring for me many years ago.He had nothing back then, and he couldn't afford expensive gifts for me, so his only option was to clumsily fold a paper ring and earnestly put it on

Overwhelming despair instantly washed over Alessio. He kept denying the truth because he couldn't accept the fact that he had personally caused my death. He whipped his head up, staring intently at the director in front of him as he said in a trembling voice, "Impossible! It can't be! The doctor said she was just malnourished, and she'll be fine if she gets plenty of rest!"Seeing Alessio fall apart, the director said hesitantly, "I'm not sure about the details. It's possible that the doctors were in too much of a rush back then and missed her actual condition.""Her actual condition?" The thought suddenly struck Alessio. He finally remembered the time when I talked to him at the bridal boutique with my medical records in hand. My eyes were reddened as I told him I wasn't feeling well. But back then, he was misled by Camelia's words. He thought that I was faking my illness just to ruin his wedding with Camelia. He didn't even take a proper look at the medical report, and he had n

He spent every day irritated, anxious, and in a constant state of unease. When Camelia heard about my disappearance, she suppressed her resentment over Alessio's refusal to grant her legitimate status. She went to Albini Manor to see him, carrying their newborn baby in her arms.Walking up to Alessio, she put on a humble facade and said in a guilty tone, "Alessio, I'm sorry. I was too greedy back then. I shouldn't have coveted a position that's not meant to be mine. I wanted to be with you and our child so badly that I acted out of selfishness. Please don't be mad at me."Alessio's expression was calm, and he didn't say a word. His gaze fell upon the child, but his mind was already somewh

After ending the call, Alessio stared at the dark screen of his phone. He suddenly felt a little annoyed. For reasons unknown, he felt that something was off.But before he could think about it further, Camelia clutched at her belly and leaned in close to him. "Alessio, I'm a little scared."Returning to his senses, Alessio reached out and patted her on the back. "Don't worry. The doctors have already examined you."Alessio was a little distracted. He decided to settle Camelia down and then look for me right away.He wanted to ask me about the phone call.Camelia seemed to have seen through his thoughts. By the time I opened my eyes again, I was already floating in mid-air.I watched the doctors in the emergency room scrambling around me, trying to keep me alive.…Meanwhile, Camelia clutched at her belly as she sobbed ceaselessly. Alessio's expression had turned extremely dark.He said sternly to the director, "Get all your best doctors here."The director hesitated for a moment. "Don Albini, there's another patient in critical condition in the ER who's still undergoing resuscitation. Several attending physicians are handling the case. If we pull them all away now—"Before he could finish speaking, Alessio cut him off. "I don't care. I have to make sure that Camelia and her child are absolutely safe."Alessio was the Don of the Albini family.
